I was blessed to attend Catholic Schools from the time I was 3 until I was 28 years old. I went to a Catholic Pre-School, Grade School, High School, a Catholic University and then six years of Seminary. Obviously, Catholic Education has been a huge part of my life. The other greatest gifts I have received came in the form of my family members; I am the oldest of four children, with one sister and two brothers. My parents are wonderful people, and as they were faced with the challenges, financial and otherwise, of raising a young family, they decided to make the sacrifice to provide a Catholic Education for all four of us children. I know this was not an easy task, and although I did not appreciate it at the time, we were living paycheck to paycheck to make this happen and yet, by the grace of God, they did make it happen. As I write to you as your pastor, I can assure you that my parents sacrifice to educate us in Catholic Schools helped provide the strong foundation for my siblings and myself to grow closer to Christ in all the areas of our lives. I know that children can receive a fine education at many of the area schools here in Rowan County. I am not going to discredit for a second the hard work that teachers and administrators do all around us. But what I can say is that we are blessed here at Sacred Heart to provide not only an excellent education, but at the same time, and most importantly, we are able to keep at the center of all we do here at Sacred Heart the constant goal of helping our students grow in their love of God and of their neighbor. We are striving here to form Saints; we want to help your children to go to heaven. I saw my parents assisted by St. Vincent de Paul Grade School and Peoria Notre Dame High School in their desire for this ultimate goal for my siblings and me when I was growing up, and I can assure you that you will find the same kind of crucial cooperation here at Sacred Heart in helping students everyday to know the love and the joy of Jesus Christ. I love our faith formation program and the opportunity to serve children from our parish every Wednesday night. However, to be completely honest with you, I wish we could serve every student from our parish here in the school every day, because the faith is more than simply a class on Wednesday night. 2

3 Here at Sacred Heart Catholic School, our Catholic Faith is an essential part of everything we do every day. During this year s Catholic Schools Week, please take some time to pray for our school. If you have students enrolled right now, thank God for the gift that we have right here in Salisbury. If your students attend a different school, take the time to pray and consider anew if Sacred Heart may be the place from them to come each day to grow in knowledge and virtue. If you do not have any school age children, please consider devoting more time each week to praying for this most important mission of our parish and if you would be able to support this essential work financially. A friend of mine who is a pastor of another parish with a school once told me that having a school in his parish is what constantly keeps him on his toes and on his knees. I have certainly found that to be the case here at Sacred Heart over the nearly five years that I have had the honor of serving as your pastor, and I can tell you wholeheartedly that I wouldn t have it any other way! With prayers for our whole Sacred Heart Parish Family, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. The first thing to note about The Gospel of Luke is that it was written in a two part series with the Acts of the Apostles. You will notice if you finish the Gospel of Luke and continue straight to the Acts of the Apostles it is a continuous narrative. Also, we get a glimpse of who Luke is near the end of St. Paul s Letter to the Colossians when he sends greetings from Luke the beloved physician (Col 4:14). The Gospel of Luke is often represented by a winged ox as anticipated in the beginning of the Book of Ezekiel. The ox is recognized as the animal of sacrifice. The ox was applied to St. Luke because his Gospel emphasizes the atonement made by Christ's sacrifice of himself on the Cross. 4

6 Our mission is to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and to develop each student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially, so that each is prepared to live and serve in a changing society as a self-respecting and responsible citizen. We propose to create an environment in which the teachings of Jesus are promoted and proclaimed as the basis of the values they teach and uphold. Our school proclaims the Gospel's Good News in word and deed, and educates students to live and serve as respectful, Christian citizens. Our school has open enrollment which means that we enroll students all throughout the year, as long as there is availability in that classroom. We encourage our parishioners to come explore our school. Please let us guide you on a tour to see what Sacred Heart School can mean to your family and your child. Annual Day of Giving is Tuesday, January 29 th Twenty years ago, Pope Saint John Paul II said these words to an audience of Catholic educators in New Orleans. Yours is a great gift to the Church, a great gift to your nation. These words still ring very true! Millions of people in our country have been blessed by the many gifts of Catholic schools. Whether you actually attended yourself, your parents, or your grandparents whether it is your neighbor, your boss, or your Priest we have all been touched by individuals who were brought up in the Catholic tradition. We know as a parish and school family that Catholic schools matter. Why? Because faith matters, learning matters, character matters, and safety matters. These are the four cornerstones of Catholic schools which we can stand firm with great conviction. On January 29 th, we are pleased to announce that SHCS is participating in a nationwide NCEA campaign called Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools. All over our nation, people will be asked to give to Catholic Schools. Right here at home, we are asking our alumni, school families, and parish families to give to Sacred Heart Catholic School. We hope you will be a part. For more information, please contact Principal Tyler Kulp at MARCH FOR LIFE Nuestra escuela tiene inscripción abierta, lo que significa que inscribimos estudiantes durante todo el año, siempre y cuando haya disponibilidad en escuela. Animamos a nuestros feligreses a venir a explorar nuestra escuela. Hefner VA Medical Center. 1 st Place Overall: Mayla Brinkley Honorable Mention Overall: Malaysia Dillard Miss Mayla Brinkley was invited to the Annual MLK Breakfast at the JF Hurley YMCA on Monday, Jan 21 st to read her essay to a packed audience. It was entitled, The Importance of Peace. When you say Botley you say FUN! Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade students were VERY engaged last week as they were introduced to Botley the robot. Using a special keypad to program Botley, our youngest students made him move around. They simply entered a sequence of instructions on the keypad and amazingly Botley was able to execute them. Incredible technology to a kindergartener or 1st grader! Using Botley, our younger students are learning basic robotics and programing concepts as well as critical thinking and problem solving. Our teachers asked our students to teach Botley to trace a geometrical figure and to avoid a series of obstacles - presto - and they figured out the appropriate sequence of commands to program. These kids are our future computer programmers and engineers! MAKING WAVES in 3rd Grade Mrs. Michaels' 3rd graders were all about waves this week. Utilizing center rotations of mini experiments, they explored sounds waves, light waves, waves in water, and waves with ropes and slinkys. Using flashlights and mirrors, they studied light waves. Everyone was really impressed with the Bluetooth speaker and the sound waves it created (using a tissue taped over the top). They had to label all the different types of waves and explain how they can travel through different mediums. These kids are becoming smart! You've Got Game! Congratulations to 7th grader Kaiden Dulkoski who won the boys division at the Salisbury Elks Lodge #699 Hoop Shoot at Hall Gym. Dulkoski sank 16 of 25 free throws to advance to the district contest on Saturday, January 26 in Winston Salem. Go Kaiden! Seventh grader Soyer Cornelison, 6th grader Simon Mueller and 6th grader Tony Frank were strong at the line as well. Mueller won 2nd place in the division connecting on 16 of 25 free throws. In the group, Cornelison battled in a double shootout but came in short. We love our student involvement in these fun community events. Be A Part!! 7
