Taking up our crosses? Putting our faith into actions via works that demonstrate that the faith is real? This makes all that we do here every Sunday when we gather that much more tangible, that much more present. But isn t that the way it ought to be? If what we do here is merely words which stay within these walls, does it really ultimately matter. St. John Vianney, the Patron Saint of Parish Priests, put it this way: "There is no doubt about it: a person who loves pleasure, who seeks comfort, who flies from anything that might spell suffering, who is over anxious, who complains, who blames and becomes impatient at the least little thing which does not go his way - a person like that is a Christian only in name; he is only a dishonor to his religion, for Jesus Christ has said so: Anyone who wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross every day of his life, and follow me. Following Christ will lead us to ultimate peace, eternal happiness, but He himself has warned us that the road is narrow which leads to eternal life. Do not let this disturb you; not for a minute. We know crosses will come, and we also know that Jesus Christ did not run from His, that He subsequently rose from the dead, and has promised to remain with us until the end of time. Use the quote from St. John Vianney as an examination of conscience. Don t be a Christian in name only, but rather, deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow our Lord to eternal life. Praying that each one of us may grow in authentic love of our Risen Lord, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. John 2

In today s Gospel, Christ asks two very important ques ons. First he asks his disciples, Who do people say that I am? Imagine if Christ asked us that ques on today, how would we respond. We might say a good teacher, a nice man, a fake, or maybe someone who never even existed. Christ would listen to our answers, as he did in the Gospel, and then respond with his second ques on, Who do YOU say that I am? How would you respond? Could you respond truthfully and honestly? Do you live your life in accord with your answer or do your ac ons reveal something different? Whatever your answer is, let us ask Christ to give us eyes to truly recognize him as our Lord and Savior. 5

6 School News / Noticias Escolares Our mission i is to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and to develop each student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially, so that each is prepared to live and serve in a changing society as a self-respecting and responsible citizen. Our school proclaims the Gospel's Good News in word and deed, and educates students to live and serve as respectful, Christian citizens. Remembering 9/11 and Our Heroes Last Tuesday, Sacred Heart had several special activities planned with our students to remember 9/11 (Patriot Day) and all the heroes and helpers in our lives. We used a quote by Mr. Fred Rogers to inspire our day. We did not want this day to be scary to our students, but instead a day to talk about being a hero/helper in our family, school, and community at large. Our school has open enrollment which means that we enroll students all throughout the year, as long as there is availability in that classroom. Since Our middle school came together to pray a Patriotic Rosary in honor of Patriot Day and to show RESPECT (our virtue of the week) to those who lost their lives in 2001 and to those who are still suffering from the events of that fateful day in American history. During this Rosary, we prayed a Hail Mary for each of the fifty states, prayed for our national and local government leaders, and prayed for the conversion of our country from secular ways to the ways of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Interspersed throughout the Rosary, they also heard quotes from great Americans such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Jedediah Morse, the "Father of American Geography." In addition, our students sang several patriotic songs. Our elementary students focused on community helpers and heroes. We were delighted to have Carol Dellinger join us in Morning Assembly. She is such a wonderful example of a community hero, working with our local paramedics, firefighters and police rescuers for over 40 years to teach them first aid and CPR rescue in the serious of circumstances. 6

7 FUND A BUS CAMPAIGN A quick update on our Fund the Bus campaign for Sacred Heart Catholic School. GREAT NEWS! Our total money raised for our new school bus is NOW $48, We have passed the half way mark. Our goal is $85,000. As soon as it is raised in full, we can begin the process of having a new Sacred Heart bus to transport students and parishioners to field trips, ballgames, service opportunities, and community events. This year we are so pleased to welcome 24 new families and 38 new students to our SHCS school family. We are so blessed to have that many new students attend our school. In August, SHCS students and staff have worked on our virtue of affability to make everyone feel so welcome! As some of you may know, my wife and I are getting ready to welcome a baby daughter into the world. We are really excited for this next adventure in our lives. Little Stella Brynn will be so blessed to grow up here in our Sacred Heart Catholic parish and school. Mrs. Camile Denhard already has the enrollment forms for school year for my own daughter. Eckert Queridos Amigos, Hay palabras difíciles en las lecturas de este domingo. Tomando nuestras cruces? Poniendo nuestra fe en acciones a través de obras que demuestren que la fe es real? Esto hace que todos los domingos que nos reunirnos sea mucho más real, mucho más presente. Pero no es así como debería ser? Si lo que hacemos aquí no es más que palabras que permanecen dentro de estos muros, realmente importa? San Juan Vianney, el Santo Patrón de los Sacerdotes Parroquiales, lo expresó de esta manera: "No hay ninguna duda al respecto: una persona que ama el placer, que busca consuelo, que huye de todo lo que pueda significar sufrimiento, que está ansioso, que se queja, que culpa y se impacienta ante la menor cosa que no es a su manera - una persona así es un cristiano solo por nombre, es un deshonor para su religión, porque Jesucristo lo ha dicho así: Cualquiera que quiera venir en pos de mí, que se niegue a sí mismo y tome su cruz cada día de su vida, y sígueme ". Seguir a Cristo nos llevará a la paz suprema, a la felicidad eterna, pero él mismo nos ha advertido que el camino es angosto y lleva a la vida eterna. No dejes que esto te moleste; ni por solo un minuto. Sabemos que vendrán cruces, y también sabemos que Jesucristo no huyó de la suya, que posteriormente resucitó en los muertos, y ha prometido permanecer con nosotros hasta el fin de los tiempos. Usen la cita de San Juan Vianney como un examen de conciencia. No sean cristiano solo de nombre, sino más bien, niéguese a sí mismo, tomen su cruz cada día, y siga a nuestro Señor a la vida eterna. Estarte rezando para que cada uno de nosotros podamos crecer en el amor auténtico de nuestro Señor Resucitado. Atentamente en Cristo, Padre John 8

9 ESCUCHANDO Y RESPONDIENDO En las lecturas de hoy se entrecruzan tres temas: escuchar a Dios, la fe vs. las buenas obras y perder nuestra vida para poder salvarla. De qué manera están relacionados estos temas? En Isaías, el Siervo Sufriente padece muchos disgustos y burlas, pero puede soportarlos porque ha escuchado los mensajes de Dios día tras día. El salmo nos dice que Dios también escucha. Dios escucha nuestras súplicas y siempre está dispuesto a salvarnos. Cuando nuestra fe se profundiza, también se profundiza nuestro deseo de hacer obras de justicia y caridad que fortalecen el Reino de Dios. Dios guía nuestras acciones de maneras que muchas veces no podemos ver y no siempre vemos los resultados. Se nos llama en fe a confiar en que lo que hacemos es suficiente y que nuestra disposición a escuchar los mensajes de Dios nos guiará por el camino correcto. LANZARNOS A LO IMPOSIBLE Entrénanos, Señor, a lanzarnos a lo imposible, porque detrás de lo imposible está tu gracia y tu presencia... Nuestro camino se interna en la niebla, pero queremos seguir dándonos, porque tú estás esperando en la noche, con mil ojos humanos rebosando lágrimas.
