The name drawn at the May meeting was Ed Fitzgerald, who was not present. The money collected at meetings in which there is no winner is placed in the fund until a winner is picked at a future meeting. The 50/50 was won by Scot Graham. GK s Message My Brothers all, Knights Of Columbus Mater Dei Council # In one month, I will have and life time honor of being called a PGK - Past Grand Knight of Mater Dei Council. First and foremost, I have to thank my fellow Officers who served with me. I sincerely appreciate all the efforts and hard work of all the officers. Especially, Ted Tate for serving as my Deputy, I look forward to helping you achieve your goals as Grand Knight. Tony Cammarota, for your excellent job serving as the Recorder and a Reporter for the Blue Mantle, your efforts are memorized forever in our Council s Records and Blue Mantle publications. Thank you, John Frey and Eric Gregrich efforts for your oversight of the Council s financial matters and John Li for your service as Chancellor. As a member of Mater Dei Council, we should be proud of the work we do year after year. Many of the services we do for Church, Community, Council, Family, Pro-Life and Youth are just routine to us as Knights, but sincerely appre- June 2010 Garage to Attic Sale ciated by those we serve. I could go on and on with all the Thank You notes I received during the year for all our work. But, the one think that impressed me most were comments that stated Knights can always be depended on for their service. Awards are nice, but it is honor to serve silently as many of your Brother Knights do day after day. It is a honor to be part of a Council, that silently serves so many activities throughout the church and community. One of our Council s the greatest accomplishments is the work we do helping persons with intellectual disabilities. Year after year each fall, we all consolidate our efforts to collect money for that special cause. This year was no exception, the efforts of Don Novotny and his core group of Brother Knights achieved a very commendable award. Their organizational efforts coupled with over one hundred supporting Knights resulted in Mater Dei Council collecting the largest amount of money per member in the state of Maryland. Brothers, we received a First Place Award for our Tootsie Roll Drive effort. We were also third in the state for the total amount of money collected. We should be very proud of our efforts, since many Councils in the state have thousands of members and we only have about two hundred members. (Continued on next page)

It is a excellent opportunity of serve the Council and get to know your Brother Knights. On Friday June 18, we will be collecting, organizing the setting up the sale, please contact DD s Report June 2010 My Brothers and Ladies, Looking back on it, it hardly seems like two years have already passed. I clearly remember writing my first message to you, and here we are now at the end of this Columbian year, the end of State Deputy Siejack s Administration, and therefore, the end of my tenure as his Deputy for District 18. Don Novotny to help or just stop by during the day or evening, we can never have to much help for this event, it is quit the task. God Bless My Brothers, thank you for the honor of allowing me to serve as your Grand Knight and I sincerely look forward to serving as a PGK. experience. I have enjoyed my visits to each of your councils and their programs, and I have met and made many new friends. Special thanks, of course, go to the eight Grand Knights who, with the untiring help of their ladies, led our four councils through these two years. It was the dedication to the job they accepted what made these two years what they were. In spite of work and family obligations, stock market problems, weather surprises and everything in-between, they managed to lead an outstanding set of officers, chairmen, and a host of volunteers through a wide variety of programs serving our communities, our parishes, our families and our young, while at the same time enriching our own lives and having fun doing it! Tom was born, raised, and schooled in Washington,DC. He received a B.S. in math from Rensaleer Polytechnical Institute, and an MBA from George Washington University. He served in the Army in Vietnam. In his pro- and real estate with the General Services Administration, then with the Corps of Engineers, and the Civil Service Commission. Since retiring from GSA he has held various positions with non-profit organizations. He is currently Executive Director of Stepping Stone Shelter. With the Council he works Tootsie Rolls and Manna, and was previously coordi- activity. At St. Raphael he is in the choir, on the social concerns committee, coordinates Shelter Week during Lent, and assists with the Red Cross blood drive. He is ably assisted in all these endeavors by his wife Marilyn. They have four children and two grandchildren.

3 Page 3 WINE TASTING PARTY Saturday June 26, 2009 Due to popular demand, we are having another wine tasting party. It is a fun filled relaxing evening for Brother Knights and their wives or guest. It is a great opportunity to get to know some Brothers and their wives better. We serve wine, cheese, snacks, desert and coffee. There is plenty of good times for all. The theme for this party is Eastern European wines. One of our objectives is to introduce you to wines you would not ordinarily drink at home. You may come across one or two you would like to add to those you normally serve. We always attempt to have one or two that are on a higher scale and are pricey but may be appropriate for a special occasion. If you are just being introduced to wine or even if you don t drink it at all you can still enjoy your evening. We do have people that come that don t drink it at all. We have nonwine drinkers that now come regularly and have learned to appreciate it. It is being held June 26 at 7:30pm. The price is only $20 per person. We need reservations paid in advance no later than Wednesday June 16 in order to have time to purchase the necessary quantity of wine and food. We can accommodate a maximum of 22 people. So hurry and get your reservations in early. If you have any questions call Richard Weller at Reservations with checks made out to Richard Weller should be mailed to him at Butterwick Way Gaithersburg, MD WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! Garage-2-Attic Sale MATER DEI BROTHERS, let s all support our 20 th annual Garage to Attic Sale! Volunteer help if you possibly can, but even if not, at least COME awhile, be there! Lots more volunteers are still needed June 18 and 19 to cover all the tasks. With the postponed date, we ve already learned that more of you than usual will be away, so for those who WILL be here that weekend, we ask that EACH OF YOU PLEASE consider devoting a few hours to help put on this very worthwhile activity. No question most of you have work and family obligations, but try your best to find a window that works for you. Best would be if you can spare up a couple of hours either morning or afternoon on Friday the 18 th ; but if Friday s just not possible, Saturday 8:30 to 11:30 is also a very busy time, especially this year as we need quite a few extra men to serve as floor salespersons in the many different departments. Or, as always, there s post sale clean up and haulaway, 1 3 Saturday. Lets remember: loads of our fellow parishioners take time to support us in this annual charity activity, not only by stopping at the site to visit us on Friday and donate goods for our sale, but also by coming again on Saturday to join in the fun, hunting for discarded treasures, and, again, showing their support. So lets show our appreciation by being there in big numbers on both days to cheerfully greet them and thank them, OK? Over the years, the outside general public has come to look forward to our sale, too, knowing that its such a huge display, with probably over 10,000 items, and that its for good charity causes. To them as well, let s show our appreciation and warm welcome. So again, really, EVERYONE, even you can t volunteer, for heaven s sake, come by, maybe bring a family member with you, be there!

Distribution workers Tom and Pat Buck and Tom Folkes are restricted on driving, and thus the need. Within a week, two members of the knights answered the call Marti Piper and Ursula Boesch. Just shows how effective the Mantle can be on getting gout the word! Thanks to our faithful fellow LADY knights! Tom Buck Garage To Attic Sale Brothers: If you re among those who ve not yet volunteered or been contacted for a particular place with the upcoming GAS, its best if you contact us ahead, to find the place that might be most fun for the time frame you re available, and/or to learn where help is most needed. (Don Novotny , or Tom Luxner ). For those who don t get to, come anyway walk in s will be greeted with open arms; just inside the school s main entrance, our reception desk, will have up to minute info as to layout, and the different team leaders needing help. Supply Needed for G.A.S. Note! Some important but hard to find supplies need to be borrowed from somewhere anywhere to facilitate the displays at our upcoming Garage to Attic Sale; specifically: (1) Converter boxes, analog to digital, for TV sets to be displayed in our TV room, (2) Plastic shelving, of a collapsible, take down, easily transported type these would be big help in our clothes dept, the books room, in housewares, and other places. (3) Clothes racks; both our general clothing dept and our upscale room need a bunch of these.
