2 June & July 2010 Page 2 Biting off more than you can chew An introduction to Project 1,1,1 When it comes to evangelism we are told by clergy, Sunday School teachers, and laity, newly returned from a weekend Christian retreat, that we should be evangelizing everyone we come in contact with. We know from Scripture that God wants His Church, you and I, to take the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth. So we get the impression that if we are not preaching about Jesus on a street corner, or talking about Jesus to someone sitting next to us on a plane, or in line at the grocery store, then we are letting down our Lord. The task seems so daunting, and so big, that we end up doing little evangelism at all. Project 1,1,1 allows each one of us to be Great Commission Christians without being pushy, impolite, causing discomfort to others, or even having to move to someplace like Siberia. The Diocese of Fort Worth has planted seven congregations in the last 10 years, or so. This probably puts us at the top of the list in terms of church planting dioceses in the Western Anglican world. Using Project 1,1,1, the Church in Nigeria is planting multiple dioceses each year. That s DIO- CESES, not congregations. Over the last decade or so, we have seen the Anglican Church in Nigeria grow from seven million Christians to 14 million, to over 22 million. Using Project 1,1,1, the number of new Christians, those declaring their faith in Jesus, being baptized, and joining a local congregation, seems to exceed the province s ability to count. What is so exciting about Project 1,1,1, is that everyone of us can do it by simply being who we are and using the relationships we already have for the glory of God and His Kingdom. As an example, one member of our parish has been working with a family that they are friends with. He has gotten them into church, in to visits with the clergy, and we are praying that by the time you read this, three members of the family will have been baptized. Project 1,1,1 requires that one Christian, introduces one person to Jesus Christ, during the course of one year. Simply look at the people you know and begin praying for who God might be reaching out to. Who in your life needs to know the hope and joy and peace that come from knowing Jesus Christ? Who in your life needs to experience the love and acceptance of being part of the Body of Christ gathered here at St. Vincent s? The next step is to begin praying daily for that person. Praying that their heart would be open to the Good News. Praying that the Holy Spirit would give you the right words at the right time. Then, invite this person to Bible Studies or classes, fellowship, or worship at St. Vincent s. Help them by introducing them to others in the parish or by sitting with them during worship and using the visitor Prayer book at the back of the Narthex. Talk with them afterwards about what they experienced here. Find times to share with them your own faith experience. How has Jesus changed your life? What has God done for you? What does knowing Jesus mean to you? And finally, have them meet one of the clergy to talk about their spiritual journey. We can direct them and provide them options and pray with them as they are searching for the Truth. There will be more to come about Project 1,1,1. But, don t wait to begin. As Jesus reminded his disciples, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

3 Page 3 THE DEACON Cambodian Mission Report We were very pleased to have Canon Wong Tak Meng and Rev. Steven Seah, both from the Diocese of Singapore, Province of Southeast Asia, visit with us the week of April 13 th. They are both involved in work with, and in, the missionary Deanery of Cambodia and were very helpful in sharing information with us about how we can join them in taking the Gospel to the people of Cambodia. St. Vincent s had been asked by the Anglican Global Mission Partners to join with the Province of Southeast Asia and develop support for their work there. Jan and Thom Murrell had traveled to a conference in Bangkok and on to Cambodia in the fall of 2008 and brought back information concerning the church there and the open fields for Christ s work with these people. We are also familiar with Cambodia because of the work being done by Summer Twyman in the intervention and rehabilitation of girls freed from sex slavery. We also had the pleasure of visiting with Summer during that same week, and were able to learn more about her work and success, along with some of the challenges she faces. Please pray for her daily. We developed some preliminary ideas of what our support can be for this missionary deanery and will continue to work directly with the diocese of Singapore. As part of this relationship development, Dean Reed and Thom Murrell will travel to Singapore and on to Cambodia with representatives from Singapore. They will visit the church in Phnom Penh and travel to some of the village churches to the north, in order to better understand needs and how we can work together with the Cambodian people and the Province. They will be leaving on June 2 nd and returning the 11th, and ask for your prayers during the trip. Continued prayers are asked for Cambodia, its people, God s work with them, and for the success of St. Vincent s work along with those from Singapore. Father s Day Special Collection We will have a special collection on Father s Day, Sunday, June 20th, to help our friends at Resurrection House in New Orleans. Our Mission Team will make our third trip there this summer to teach VBS at St. Andrew s Episcopal Church in Bogalusa, LA. The gift will be in the form of Home Depot, Lowe s, and Wal-Mart gift cards to help keep Resurrection House supplied with items needed for the continuing effort to help visiting teams rebuild the New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina. Use the envelopes in the bulletins that day for donations which will go to benefit this effort. Mortgage Fund Update To date, 92 households have pledged $62, to help us manage the mortgage of St. Vincent s. That is a huge step and a real blessing for our future as a parish. A letter from the Dean and our Senior Warden will be sent to the entire parish in the coming weeks addressing some of the issues behind the mortgage and the challenge from the Vestry to overcome the difficulties of this expense. Like DMR, we can all expect the mortgage fund to appear as part of our annual stewardship campaign in the coming years. Like DMR, this will be giving that is asked over and above our pledges to the mission and ministry of the parish. Unlike DMR, we have a specific goal each year going forward as we work to both service and pay down the debt from all of our facilities. Whether you are able to give at this time or not, we ask your prayers daily for God s provision and blessing upon our entire community.

7 Page 7 THE DEACON Pledge and non-pledge contributions came back in strong for the month of April as compared to the budget. Part of the gain came from Easter contributions and that we ve had families that had not pledged when we did the budget, have begun contributing. We re showing this as non-budgeted pledges. Expenses, as a total, stayed within the budget. I can t begin to tell you how much your support means. The contributions from April are helping us to begin the rebuilding of reserves for the Church. Your financial support in giving for DMR support (unusual repairs) and mortgage support are critical. It is essential that we get everyone s support to reduce the mortgage debt. This debt has to be reduced and that burden removed as soon as possible. It s a burden that is distracting and worrisome. I am seeing more contributions coming in to help with this. We have great opportunities at St. Vincent s to do God s work please be part of that and get involved. There are so many things you can do its s just finding what you enjoy the most. You should now be receiving the Deacon again by mail. This was started in May and will continue. We are working on an opt out option if you are comfortable getting your Deacon via the web site. Our Lady of Walsingham is a title used for Mary, the mother of Jesus. The title derives from the belief that Mary appeared in a vision to Richeldis de Faverches, a devout Saxon noblewoman, in 1061 in the village of Walsingham in Norfolk, England. Lady Richeldis had a Holy House built in Walsingham which became a shrine and place of pilgrimage. The Holy House, containing the simple wooden structure which Richeldis had been asked to build in imitation of the home in which the Annunciation occurred, became both a shrine and the focus of pilgrimage to Walsingham. By the time of its destruction in 1538 during the reign of Henry VIII, the shrine had become one of the greatest religious centers in England, and Europe, together with Glastonbury and Canterbury. It had been a place of pilgrimage during medieval times, when due to wars and political upheaval, travel to Rome and Compostella [in Spain] was difficult. Royal patronage helped the shrine to grow in wealth and popularity, receiving visits from Henry III, Edward II, Edward III, Henry IV, Edward IV, Henry VII, Henry VIII, and Erasmus. It was also a place of pilgrimage for English queens Catherine of Aragon was a regular pilgrim and her successor, Anne Boleyn, also announced an intention of making a pilgrimage. The suppression of the monasteries was part of the English Reformation project. The suppression of Walsingham priory came late in Walsingham was famous and its fall symbolic. According to Wriothesely, Windsor Herald, who wrote the informative Chronicle of England during the reigns of the Tudors It was the month of July, the images of Our Lady of Walsingham and Ipswich were brought up to London with all the jewels that hung around them, at the King s commandment, and divers other images, both in England and Wales, that were used for common pilgrimage... And they were burnt at Chelsea by my Lord Privy Seal. The buildings were looted and largely destroyed. All that remained of it was the gatehouse, the chancel arch and a few outbuildings. But, the memory of it was less easy to eradicate. After nearly 400 years the 20th century saw the restoration of pilgrimage to Walsingham as a regular feature of Christian life in the British Isles and beyond. There are both Roman Catholic and Anglican shrines in Walsingham. In 1897 Pope Leo XIII reestablished the restored 14th century Slipper Chapel as a Roman Catholic Shrine, now the center of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. The Holy House had been rebuilt at the Church of the Annunciation at King s Lynn. In 1921 Anglican interest was again ignited in the pre-reformation pilgrimage. A new statue of Our Lady of Walsingham was created based on the image depicted on the seal of the medieval priory. In 1922 the statue was set up in the Parish Church of St. Mary and regular pilgrimage devotion followed. From the first night that the statue was placed there, people gathered around it to pray, asking Mary to join her prayers with theirs. Throughout the 1920s the trickle of pilgrims became a flood of large numbers for whom, eventually, the Pilgrim Hospice was opened (a hospice is the name of a place of hospitality for pilgrims) and, in 1931, a new Holy House encased in a small pilgrimage church was dedicated and the statue translated there with great solemnity. In 1938 that church was enlarged to form the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. The Rt. Rev. Lindsay Urwin is the current administrator of the Anglican shrine. Bishop Urwin has visited St. Vincent s on numerous occasions in the past and is a great friend to this parish. [excerpted from Wikipedia.com]
