3 Page 3 The Deacon NEW KNEELERS FOR ST. VINCENT S By Tina Whitfill Some of you may have seen the art work of the first of the new kneelers that are being made for the church. It was on display during Rally Sunday. There is a decided effort underway to make eleven new kneelers. Ten will be used in front of the sanctuary (they will replace the existing kneelers), and one will be dedicated for special occasions (weddings, baptisms, ordinations, etc.). The overall design on the kneelers is to have a special crest in the center with a grapevine motif growing out of the crest to fill in across the top. The following crests have been selected. Gospel Side (left side to center) THE DOVE - Symbol for the Holy Spirit (pledged) THREE INTERLOCKING RINGS - Symbol for the Trinity THE HAND OF GOD - Symbol for God the Father (pledged) THE FLEUR DE LIS - Symbol for the Trinity TRIUMPHANT LAMB - Symbol for Jesus Christ (pledged) Epistle Side (center to right side) THE CHALICE - Symbol for the Bread and Wine THE LILY - Symbol for the Virgin Mary (pledged) THE CROSS - Symbol of the Atonement and God s love through the death of his Son CARPENTER TOOLS - Symbol for St. Joseph (pledged) THE CROWN OF THORNS AND NAILS - Symbols of Christ s passion and death for our redemption ALPHA AND OMEGA - Symbol of the eternal nature of Jesus Christ - the beginning and the end [used for- Weddings, Confirmation, and Ordinations] (pledged) There will also be a verse traversing along the visible front edge, or gusset. These words from left to right and facing the congregation are: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The new kneelers will be done in a wool needlepoint. Jane Bauch has led several classes on this technique in order to get a number of dedicated people ready for this task. The needlepoint process will take a painted canvass and transform it into a beautiful, sturdy, durable cloth; one that will hold up to years of use from our church as well as making a statement of our beliefs. Now these kneelers do come at a cost, but we would like to stress that the church budget will in no way be affected by this project. To date, the cost of six kneelers have been pledged by different groups or individuals in the church. For example, the Cathedral and Bell Choirs have funded the Alpha and Omega Kneeler. The cost of each kneeler is approximately $1,000. This cost includes the art work design, the wool thread required, and the cost of finishing and putting all the pieces together with cording and high density foam. So, the parish needs your help to fund the kneelers either as groups, families, or as individuals. Our immediate need is to raise enough funds to cover the cost of the art work and wool thread for all eleven kneelers. Contracting these two items with the designer will freeze her costs to paint the canvasses and the cost of the thread. This amounts to $600 per kneeler. As mentioned before, we have already covered the cost of six of the kneelers but we need your help to cover the cost of the other five. This is an excellent way to memorialize a loved one or a family member or a friend. Is there someone or a special occasion, birthday, anniversary, wedding, etc., you would like to honor? Or, would you simply desire to give to the project for the glory of God? All donations, regardless of the size, are needed and will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Jane Bauch, Jan Turner, Linda Bendure, or Tina Whitfill if your family or church group wish to pledge the cost of an entire kneeler. For donations, there are forms on the table in the Narthex. Please pick one up, complete it, and mail it, along with your check, to Jan Turner, 1710 Chittam Dr., Euless, TX 76039, or hand it to Jan, Jane, Linda, or Tina when you see them at church. Make your check payable to St. Vincent s Cathedral and include Kneeler Project in the memo line. If you wish to get involved in needle pointing the canvasses, please contact Jane Bauch.

4 November 2014 Page 4 Eve of Thanksgiving Mass & Blessing of the Bread St. Vincent s Cathedral Parish will gather on Wednesday evening, November 26th, at 7:00 p.m. to give thanks to God for all of life s blessings. As part of our tradition, bread items brought by parishioners are placed before the altar and are blessed during the mass. It is then distributed to parishioners for use at your Thanksgiving meal. The Rt. Rev. Jack L. Iker, Bishop III of Fort Worth, will be preaching. Remember to turn your clocks back one hour at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 2, By Alissa Davis We will remember all our faithful departed with a Requiem Mass on Monday, November 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. The music of the mass will be the Burial Service by Thomas Morley ( ). All Souls Requiem Mass Morley was a prominent British composer of both Latin and English service music, pupil of William Byrd ( ), church musician at Norwich Cathedral and Chapel Royal, and theorist known for his music treatise Plaine and Easie Introduction to Praticall Musicke (1597). His motets are also valuable contributions to the sacred literature of the 16th century. Though Morley s setting of the Burial Service is not performed as often as the later settings by William Croft or Henry Purcel, it was likely the earliest complete setting of the Anglican service for the Burial of the Dead and is, nevertheless, a beautiful harmonic framing of the texts from the Book of Common Prayer. Morley s Burial Sentences were first sung at the funeral service for Queen Elizabeth I and then became the customary setting for state funerals at Westminster Abbey in the 17th century. The names of our loved ones will be read at the altar during the Mass. ASTUTE ANGLICANS 50+ The Astute Anglicans is a group of fun loving 50+ individuals who gather the third Friday of each month in the Parish Hall for a Potluck Dinner and great fun after dinner. Some evenings we play games and other times we just have great conversations. Several times each year we go to events in the local area. We have attended musicals, sporting events and whatever someone proposes. Anyone who wants to have a fun evening with good friends is invited to attend. Just show up at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall on the third Friday or call Rudy Jackson at for more details. STEWARDSHIP 2015 A LIVING FAITH IS A GIVING FAITH Included in The Deacon on page 7 is a 2015 pledge card for your convenience. The DMR (Directed Maintenance and Repairs) Fund is an additional fund for larger (greater than $1000) facilities issues. Finally, the Mortgage Fund is to help pay the mortgage on the facility. The goal for this fund is to double the total giving from $50,000 to $100,000. Prayerfully consider your response to GOD s call. Stewardship Committee

This was a donation to St. Vincent s for major repairs and capital projects as needed. Other income includes school lease payment of $26,739. The quarterly pledges came in and moved us ahead of budget through nine months of YTD all other income is below budget too optimistic about non-pledge giving and the waived one month lease payment by the school. Year-to-date expenses continue to run behind budget. Everyone who has budget responsibility works diligently to keep expenses low. The school year ended June 2014 and July is the first month of the new school year. The actuals reflected herein are for the first quarter. During July and August only salary expenses are reflected in the budget. Once school starts in September, then tuition comes in. The school is projected to have an operating loss of $178,928 for this school year. The Church continues to help the school financially. One recent example was that the Church waived one of the monthly lease payments. Operating Income $ (20,552) $ (14,905) $ (4,411) $ (159,421) $ (44,715) $ (114,706) Commentary By Beth Fain, Senior Warden It seems coincidental that stewardship and Thanksgiving are back-to-back seasons in our St. Vincent s community. But when you think about it, it is God s perfect timing. Stewardship is about our attempt to provide God with a return on His great investment His Son s life for our eternal lives. Luke 2:48 say to whom much is given, much will be required. We have been entrusted with much in our Church and School community, and that requires our faithful management, whether it be our use of the time, talents, or treasure that we have been given. Let us be faithful and generous as we pledge our thanks for all that we have been given.

10 November 2014 Page 10 THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS By The Rev. Alan S. Horton On the evening of Sunday, October 5th, we celebrated the feast of St. Francis of Assisi with our annual blessing of the animals. St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order of monks, is the patron saint of animals, known for his love of all creatures. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the joys and blessings that our pets bring into our lives. The evening began with the service of Evening Prayer, followed by sprinkling of water and blessings for every animal. These are a few pictures of this wonderful celebration.

12 November 2014 Page 12 History and purpose of a Tree of Jesse By David Johnson, Verger The Tree of Jesse, or Jesse Tree, as a devotional theme in artwork can be traced back as far as the 11th century, yet it is frequently seen as originating in its familiar form in the stained glass of St. Denis Cathedral in 1145 and in Chartres Cathedral, both in northern France, at the same period. In these windows, the fundamental elements of the depiction of the Tree were established and were to disseminate through the cathedrals and churches of France and England in the 12th century. All of the representations of the Jesse Tree do share a universal origin in the literal interpretation of the prophecy of Isaiah, where Christ is shown as a descendant of the royal house of David. Jesse was the father of King David - And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. (Isaiah 11.1) In an inversion of standard modern day family trees, the focus, Christ, is shown in the top branches and His ancestors appear beneath. This composition means that the tree s source at Jesse is emphasized and is particularly effective in the medium of stained glass where the reading of the window begins in the lower panels and the eye is drawn up towards Christ at the apex. It was normal for Jesse to be depicted reclining at the foot of the pictorial space. The Tree which then grows out of him is often shown as a vine, a symbol of fruitfulness. Some Jesse Windows include the image of a dove descending to represent the coming of the Holy Spirit, and in other cases, seven doves or rays of light are shown to represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit described by St. Paul. In addition to stained glass, the Jesse Tree is also found in illuminated manuscripts, wall paintings, architectural carvings, funerary monuments, and embroidery. The primary purpose would have been to enable the clergy to demonstrate Christ s ancestry to the largely illiterate congregation at a time when it was normally only the clergy who could read and write. The space available will determine the number of figures that can be shown; if you followed the ancestry set out in St. Luke s Gospel, there would be 43 figures between Jesse and Christ! It is usual to show King David, often carrying a harp, and his son King Solomon. The Virgin Mary is usually included rather than Joseph, the direct descendant of Jesse. Probably the oldest surviving example in England is at York Minster (c.1310), although this has been restored on two occasions. The example in Dorchester Abbey, Oxfordshire, unusually combines tracery and sculpture in the same design as the stained glass. The Christian Heritage Foundation, located in Cleburne, Texas, presented Ancient Hebrew Scrolls The Tanakh. The scroll display contained an entire set of Ancient Hebrew Scrolls that make up the Tanakh. The Tanakh is an acronym that stand for Torah (Instruction), Nevi im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). The elaborate and beautiful display stretched across the entire front of the nave as seen above. In the picture to the left, a framed ancient scroll is presented to St. Vincent s Cathedral. In the lower picture to the left, a second framed ancient scroll was presented to Dean Ryan Reed, Dean of St. Vincent s Cathedral. IMPORTANT NOTICE Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, the deadline for the December edition of The Deacon is being advanced to December 10th.
