First of all, the Lay Director still chooses their team members from the list of suggestions provided by the Team Selection Committee. Additionally the Lay Director has the opportunity to provide a list to the Team Selection Committee of men/women he/she would like to serve with and so far the team has honored those requests by having those people on the list submitted back to the Lay Director. We have to remember that Emmaus is a Faith-based Leadership Development opportunity. So the Team Selection Committee does look at positions already served, talks given, etc. and places team candidates in particular positions to make sure we are providing every possible opportunity to cultivate new leadership for future walks. Let me emphasize that the manual from the Upper Room states, Each community Board of Directors appoints a Team Selection Committee to select all team members for Emmaus Walks during the year with the exception of Weekend Lay Directors and Spiritual Directors. It goes on to list 4 advantages of this process: 1. provides a broader awareness of prospective team members and their gifts. This awareness helps the team section process move beyond the limited circle of a Lay Director s friends and acquaintances. 2. provides continuity in the section process from Walk to Walk, whereas a single Lay Director only has in mind the goal of forming one team for one event.

2 3. can make sure the selection process is guided by team selection guidelines established by the board. Team selection guidelines are designed for both the building of the team and the building of the community into a body of mature, Christian leaders for the Church. 4. serves as an avenue of corporate discernment for the community. So as you can see, we are being liberal with the interpretation of the way the Upper Room dictates that we handle team selection. We are being liberal even though we as a Board of Directors signed a covenant with the Upper Room to conduct the Emmaus program in accordance with the current copyrighted Upper Room Emmaus materials, and to have an elected local governing body that will conduct its business in accordance with the Emmaus/Chrysalis office guidelines and, in a manner that honors Christ and His Church. Addressing number 3 above, over time we, as a community, have drifted further and further away from our team selection guidelines. When I was a Lay Director I remember sitting with the Leadership Chair and Board Chair and it was made very clear that I had to have 1/3 new team members, 1/3 2-3 time team members and 1/3 veteran team members. Additionally it was made very clear that I had to include team members from a wide geographic area including the Lima area and the Bellefontaine/West Liberty general area. Over time, those guidelines were either not communicated, were overlooked by Leadership, or ignored by Lay Directors. And finally, as I share at a first team meeting as Board Chair, and as Max Lucado writes, it s not about me, or it s not about the Lay Director. Sorry. When accepting the Lay Director position, or any team member role, it is all about being a SERVANT leader. Jesus is THE example as he washes his disciple s feet as described in John 13: Jesus also makes it very clear to us in Mathew 20:26-28, Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Serving on a team and as Lay Director is about Christ and sharing Christ s Grace with the pilgrims on that weekend. A community member approached me with his concerns and said, sorry about the rant. It s just that we all love Emmaus that much. I, too, love Emmaus that much! I want nothing more than to see our GSAE Community grow and flourish and build up new leaders for Christ! God had chosen a team, who with Christ filled hearts, came together immediately. Despite only meetings 4.5 times, due to weather, the team was able to fulfill their Christian roles as mentors for God. God had blessed us with a full walk. It was awesome for the table of Grace to sit and watch as each women continued to develop in their journey with God. The excitement increased every day as each of the women matured in their role as a pilgrim on their walk to Emmaus. Through tears, laughter, denial, acceptance, prayers and unbelievable poster parties and skits, the Women of Walk #65 turned their footsteps into a foundation for Christ. With Valentine s Day on Saturday they gave their hearts to Jesus. The women learned to Walk by faith, not by sight. 1 Corinthians 5-7. It was such a blessing to be surrounded by a wonderful team, and the ordinary/extraordinary Women of Walk #65. I am so thankful for all the memories. It was, like always, a blessing to be on an Emmaus team. Practicing our talks, songs, timing, and logistics during our meetings eent well, and we all grew closer to Christ. We went into sendoff proud of what God had done, very confident we knew our roll in the next three days. Then Thursday night after send off, we graciously stepped aside and let God do what He does best, we were not disappointed. God is still in the business of miracles, big and small, as we all found out during the 72 hrs. The weekend was filled with laughter, tears, and learning, both team and pilgrims. My prayer was and still is, that we will not leave even one person behind, not one pilgrim, not one team member, not one of our Emmaus families, and not one of those lost in the wilderness. The Emmaus experience is one of the best ways I know to touch and change lives for the good of Jesusu Christ, and #61 will always be special to the team and pilgrims. We were all so blessed by the love each of you showed by sharing your time and talents. To all the pilgrimas, thank you for being willing to trust and surrender your hearts to the experience of the weekend, may God guide you through your 4 th days. There have been several informational Eblasts sent out to the community. In addition, several forms and documents have been added to the Data Base. However, we still need contact information for many community members. If you are reading this February Newsletter on the Emmaus website or Facebook page and did not receive it via , then your personal contact information is missing or is incorrect in the Data Base. In order for the Data Base to work effectively, we need YOU to take the initiative to have YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION correct. It will help us to keep you informed and have a better understanding as to who wants to serve on teams, serve in the kitchen, supplying Agape, blessing us with special music, etc. or whatever you re (Continued on next page)

Share Group Registration The Good Shepherds are in the process of imputing share group information into the Emmaus Data Bank. Please send the following information to your Good Shepard: **Share group name **Full names of everyone in the share group **When the share group meets **Where the share group meets This information is very useful in helping to find share groups for people looking for a share group to join. It is also useful in the Team Selection process since being in a share group is a prerequisite for being asked to serve on a Team. Thank you for your cooperation, God blesses you. If you would like to serve in other areas there is always, kitchen help, making agape for the team & pilgrims, signing up for the prayer vigil, and attending candlelight.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, ARE THE PILGRIMS TO RECEIVE ANY PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL AGAPE ON THEIR BEDS ANY NIGHT OR AT TABLE DURING MEALS. The pilgrims begin receiving bed time agape Friday night and EVERYONE receives the SAME thing. NO MEGA AGAPE FOR TEAM OR PILGRIMS!!!!!! All of the pilgrims agape for Sunday must fit into a 12 ½ x 15 ½ envelope. (This is why it is important there be NO mega agape). Team agape goes in a lunch bag every day. (This is why it is important there be NO Mega agape). Please if you want to give them mega agape the perfect time is when they get home from their walk, this would be a good time for you to be able to talk with them about the walk!! Thank you!!! EMMAUS Picnic August 11 th at 6:00 pm at Tawawa Park Geib Pavilion Sidney Please bring a covered dish, drinks, and lawn chairs. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided, along with plates and silverware. Will be singing and this will be the reunion for the Women s walk from July. Men s walk from August reunion to be determined. Hope to see everyone there!!!!! Hello Emmaus Community, We have the both Women s and Men s walks coming up and there are a few things we wanted to remind you of, as you look forward to sponsoring a pilgrim, now or on a future walk. At the recommendation of the GSAE board of Directors, we encourage you to PLEASE keep these things in mind. **Your sponsorship is not just about the 72 hours the pilgrim is on the walk weekend. Therefore, you should sponsor ONE pilgrim at a time on the same walk. **Also, if you are serving on a team, you should NOT be sponsoring a pilgrim on that same walk. **We value a pilgrim s privacy, therefore the need may arise to limit the number of pilgrims from the same church on the same walk sometimes.
