1 The Messenger St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church Phone: JUNE Blades Road, P.O. Box 368 Cordova, MD info@stpaulscordova.org VISITOR S EXPECTED WHAT IS THE MEANING & USE OF LITURGICAL COLORS? "Today, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America provides a system of colors for use by its congregations; for the most part, the same system is also used by Roman and Anglican churches, at least in the United States; and by many churches around the world. Advent: Blue is associated with Advent, suggesting hope. Christmas: White, calling to mind the purity of the newborn Christ, sometimes gold is used. Baptism of Our Lord: White (see Christmas). Sundays after the Epiphany: Green is used for its symbolism of our growth in Christ. Other Sundays after Pentecost: Green is used, to indicate our growth in faith as we follow the teachings and ministry of Christ." From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2014 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved. +Christian Symbol+ Thistle The thistle, a thorny bush, symbolizes the Fall and humanity's bondage to sin. In Genesis 3, God tells Adam that one consequence of his sin will be the hard work of bringing forth crops: "[The land] will produce thorns and thistles for you" (v. 18, NIV). Because thistles crowd out everything growing nearby, they've also been equated with the weeds or thorns in some of Jesus' teachings (e.g., Matthew 7:15-20; 13:24-30, and Mark 4:2-9). Finally, Christ's crown of thorns may have been made of thistle branches.

3 Stewardship - a Way of Life How shall I repay the Lord for all the good things God has done for me? Psalm 116:12 Stewardship is about realizing how gifted one is and then properly using all those gifts our time, talent and treasure in the right proportion. The core of stewardship is gratitude a gratitude that overflows into giving as a way of thankfulness for all that God has given us. Stewardship is a way of life where stewards start to look at everything good as a gift from God. Stewardship is about giving back. It s about offering up our grateful hearts to God. Our newsletter and weekly announcements share many of the gifts of time, talent, and resources offered by our congregation including the lovely works of the sit-n-stich group, food donated to local food banks, and support for the Talbot Interfaith Shelter. So much good work is done in God s name by our congregation! One important aspect of our stewardship efforts that we do not regularly share is a summary of our weekly offerings. Your council believes that it is important for you to know the amount of offerings provided in support of the sustainability and growth of our church. Below is a statement of giving through April Our budget was approved at the annual meeting based upon the estimate of giving cards completed by the congregation. In January, we were right on target; February was impacted by inclement weather. Although March was back on budget we did not recover from the loss in February and offerings were well below average for the last two weeks in April. YTD Budget 2015 YTD Actual 2015 YTD Actual 2014 $48,346 $42, 470 $42,216 Be joyful of the good works throughout our church and be thankful for all the good things God has done for you. Pastoral Care Pastor Karen Larson and Pastor Bernard Coates of Grace Lutheran Church in Easton will be covering for St. Paul s emergency needs until our new pastor arrives. Please continue to contact St. Paul s church office at or Fay Sauca at Kids are free A little boy in church for the first time watched as the ushers passed the offering plates. When they neared the pew where he sat, the youngster piped up so everyone could hear: Don t pay for me, Daddy. I m under five. 3

4 SOUP AND SANDWICH DAY What is a dad? A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail. Unknown JUNE 21,

9 We are always looking for new volunteers to help on Sunday mornings! We especially need volunteers for lectors and the altar committee really needs a few more people to help in preparing the altar for communion right now each person takes a month to set up communion and clean up after worship, change altar cloths and put flowers on the altar. More volunteers would be wonderful and each person wouldn t have to serve as many times each year. Find a friend and you can share the work.
