1 JUNE 2011 The Messenger St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church Phone: Blades Road Cordova, MD Pastor s Perspective: On Wearing a Christian Wardrobe At the suggestion of St. Paul s Mutual Ministry committee, the Pastor s Perspectives for the coming months will be based on the Bible study we share together at our Mutual Ministry meetings, so that you can be a part of the conversation and study too! I think this was a great suggestion, and am eager to see how it develops and how God works through it in our congregation! Dear Friends in Christ, How much time and thought do you put into choosing the clothes you will wear each day? If I had to guess, I would say that some of us put a lot of thought into our clothing choices. We may look at the weather forecast so that we know how warmly or coolly to dress. We may take into consideration what we have scheduled for the day will we be staying at home, will we be going out, will we be working outside or inside these are all questions that we might consider as we choose our daily wardrobes. Still, I am sure that there are others of us who put very little thought into what we will be wearing each day, perhaps because we wear a uniform of some sort, or perhaps because we simply don t care that much about it. In all of this thinking (or not thinking!) about what we wear each day, have you ever given consideration to whether or not you are wearing a Christian wardrobe? You may be thinking that I m off my rocker for even suggesting that such a thing as a Christian wardrobe exists, but in Colossians 3:12-17 St. Paul writes about that very thing. As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love which binds everything together with perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. What does your Christian wardrobe look like? As this Easter season draws to a close and as Pentecost Sunday draws near, we are invited to do some spiritual Spring cleaning. We are invited to inventory our Christian wardrobes to make sure that our spiritual clothing is clean, pressed, and ready to wear. We might find that it s time to get rid of some of our old clothing those old thoughts and practices that are outdated, worn out, or that simply don t fit us anymore so that we can make room in our closets for that which God making new in our lives right now and in the future. We might find that we have items in our closets extra compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, love, thankfulness, gratitude, and so on that we can donate to those whose spiritual wardrobes might be empty or worn out. We might rediscover items in our Christian wardrobes that we had forgotten about, or hadn t used in a long time, and begin using them again in new and exciting ways. Do you wear your Christian clothing regularly? Have you ever heard the phrase, If you don t use it, you lose it? Through our baptism into Christ Jesus, we are given gifts of the Spirit. These gifts are our Christian wardrobe and our spiritual clothing. They belong to every baptized person, whether we use them or not. The trouble with this is that the gifts of the spirit (compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, etc.) are all behaviors and attitudes. Like any behavior or attitude, if our spiritual clothing is not used regularly, the skills that help us do them become rusty. Spiritual clothing is like your favorite pair of jeans or shoes they are the most comfortable and the easiest to wear when they are worn often. When we make regular use of the gifts the Spirit gives to us, we become more proficient in using those gifts in service to God and to one another, and our service becomes second nature. How do the people around you respond to your Christian wardrobe? The clothing we wear says something about us to the world, and like it or not, people respond to us based on the clothing we wear. For example, we might be able to learn something about the kind of work a person does or the kind of environment in which a person spends most of their time based on their clothing. We might be able to tell if a person has recently lost or gained weight based on how well their clothing fits. Hopefully, people around us can tell that we are Christians they can see God in us based on how we wear our Christian wardrobes. A Christian wardrobe is meant to be worn everyday, in every place, in every time so that the world can see that Christ dwells in us, and so that we can be reminded of our own identity as children of God. If your Christian wardrobe needs some help, I invite you to join us in worship regularly throughout the summer to hear God s Word proclaimed, to receive God s sacraments, and to be filled with the Holy Spirit so that we might all be clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, love, thankfulness, and gratitude, singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God, giving thanks to God the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. Yours in Christ, Emily Hollars Leitzke, Pastor

6 6 The Talbot County Fair is just around the corner, which means... It s time for our youth to get ready to run the cake wheel again! The fair will run from July 13-16, 2011 at the AG Center in Easton. We are also going to need people to donate baked goods for us to give away! Last year we collected over 300 desserts, and we ll need at least that many again this year. The desserts can be anything from cakes, to cookies, to brownies, to cupcakes the sky s the limit! Also, we will need some special items to be given away during our special spins of the wheel, last year folks donated fresh produce, special cakes, etc.! We are going to bake a bunch of cakes and desserts ahead, so if you don t have the time to bake, you could donate a cake mix, eggs, oil, icing, etc and we ll bake it for you! The proceeds from the cake wheel will benefit St. Paul s Youth Group and its ongoing fundraising efforts for the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, July Thanks to the congregation for all the ways you support our youth and for your continued support in the future. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND PLAN TO ATTEND... Have you ever wondered what the mission of our congregation is? Have you ever wondered what God is urging our congregation to do with our collective time, talents and treasures? Have you ever wanted to be a part of helping to determine these things for our congregation? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will want to plan to attend the Vision & Mission Planning sessions scheduled to be held at St. Paul s beginning in June. These sessions will be led by Assistant to the Bishop Pastor Ed Kay on Sunday June 26*, Sunday July 10, and Sunday July 24, following worship, from 10:30am 12:30am at St. Paul s. You are encouraged to make the commitment to attend all three sessions, as each session will build upon the one before it. The more people we have participating, the more effective this Vision and Mission Planning experience will be! Look for more information in upcoming newsletters, bulletins, and mailings. *Pastor Emily will be hosting a volunteer appreciation Spaghetti luncheon following the June 26 vision and mission planning session at 12:30. Summer Coffee Hour On the second and fourth Sundays of the month from June through August, we will be enjoying fellowship hour after worship. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided. All you need to do is plan on sticking around for a few minutes after church, maybe having a snack, and spend some time getting to know one another better, and catching up with one another on your week. Join Us! June 12 and June 26 Following worship

Vincent Goddard passed away on May 21, A Graveside Service has been scheduled for Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 11:00 am. at St. Paul s Church. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I write with thanks for the opportunity to serve as assisting minister during our celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. What a privilege it was to be home for Holy Week, and to be with you as our community celebrated Easter! Speaking the prayers of the people on Easter Sunday was indeed a great honor. One of my professors here at the Seminary is fond of saying that intercessory prayer is the time when the Church brings the needs of a needy world before God. I thank you for the honor of speaking for our community as we did just that: cry out for God to heal the many wounds of our wounded world. I look forward to when I join you next for worship, and hope that you will continue to pray for me on my journey through seminary and theological education. I will be leaving the Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia at the end of this semester, and finishing my studies at Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. Before I move to New Haven, I will be completing a summer unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Clinical Pastoral Education allows seminarians and students from a variety of theological traditions to work and learn in hospitals and clinical settings as they prepare for ministry. As Georgetown is a Catholic hospital with roots in the Jesuit tradition, it is deeply committed to spiritual and physical health. I look forward to joining Georgetown s Pastoral Care Department as I learn about hospital chaplaincy and serve patients, families, and staff. Please hold me in your prayers, and I will hold you in mine, for together we are the Body of Christ, daily put to death and daily raised to new life in him. Grace and Peace, Casey N.
