2 2 F r o m t h e P a s t o r s D e s k This week at St. Margaret Mary, there will be three visiting priests celebrating a few of the daily Masses. This Thursday, Fr. Ronaldo Paulino of the Rogationist Fathers and assigned as associate pastor at St. Jerome s will be taking the 8:00 am Mass. On Friday, Fr. Bob Cook of the Franciscans, pastor of St. Ita and of happy memory here at SMM, will take the Mass for that morning. On Saturday morning, Fr. Colins Ekpe of the Vincentians will take the morning Mass. Fr. Mike will not be available for Masses this week. Fr. Hal will be going for a minor outpatient procedure this week. It is nothing serious, but he and I both felt that it would be good for him to have a day or two to rest in case he may need it. This, of course, made it necessary for me to schedule visiting priests. Trust me, it was not easy. It took me a little over a month s worth of calling around to priest friends and other contacts to schedule priests for the Masses here this week. I am extremely grateful that Fr. Ronaldo, Fr. Bob and Fr. Colins made time in their schedules. Also this week, many of the priests of the Archdiocese will be on convocation in St. Charles, IL. The Cardinal had asked pastors to plan for having Communion Services at their respective parishes this week considering that a good number of priests would not be available for Masses. I did not choose to go that route simply because, other than his outpatient procedure, Fr. Hal would be available for the first part of this week. It only meant having a priest to cover for Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Again, even though it required several weeks of calling around to find a priest to cover those days, I am grateful that our daily Mass schedule will be undisturbed. I, myself, will be at the convocation for part of the time and from there I will go to O Hare bound for the Philippines and Japan. As I mentioned previously, I was asked by a group of parishioners from St. Nicholas Parish in Evanston to accompany them on a mission to the Philippines and Japan. I will be acting as their chaplain and be of assistance to them while in the Philippines. Since none of the group members are Filipino except myself and it will be the first time in the Philippines for virtually all of them, the organizer wanted to have a priest accompany them who is familiar with the language and customs. Of course, I am not familiar with the language or customs of Japan, but the group wanted me to accompany them the whole way so that they would have a chaplain when needed. While in the Philippines, I will also have the opportunity to attend a Thanksgiving Mass for a good friend of mine who was recently ordained a priest. I will be gone for about 3 weeks, returning to the parish on July 9th. While I am away, we will also be welcoming a missionary priest on the weekend of July 7th & 8th. This will be our parish s participation in the Summer Co -Op that is customarily held in the summer months throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. The missionary priest will be Father John Bosco Ssekkomo from Uganda who will be speaking on behalf of the Bannabikira Sisters. The Bannabikira Sisters are a religious order of sisters who were founded in Uganda. Their congregation is also known as Daughters of Mary. The sisters wear blue colored habits and model their lives on the motherhood of the Virgin Mary caring for those in need as if they were their own children. The second collection on the weekend of July 7th & 8th will benefit the missionary work of the Bannabikira Sisters. I invite all of us to be as generous as possible with the Summer Missionary Co-Op. Having been to Uganda myself and having seen the conditions that people endure on a daily basis, I can testify that the Sisters work is very important and very much in need of support. 5 F o c u s o n t h e W o r d 5 CYCLES OF FAITH 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.
