Lebanon Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 367 Cedar Boulevard Pittsburgh, PA Pastor: The Reverend Dr. Cindy McClung Worship Fellowship 9:15 AM CAYA (Contemporary) Worship 9:45 AM Sunday Morning Worship 11:00 AM PLEASE JOIN US! Christian Reporter Mt. Lebanon Christian June 2018 Wow! I can hardly believe that I have been your Pastor for a year already (June 5). Time flies when you are having fun!! For me, this year has been a wonderful one. Getting to know you personally and as a congregation is exciting and inspiring. I am thankful to God to have the privilege of being your Pastor. In the year ahead, there is much for us to do as we seek to serve God in God s kingdom here on earth. Pease continue to pray for me, the church leadership, the vision team and the congregation as a whole. Please pray specifically for the Holy Spirit to fill us and guide us to the ways and places in which we can best serve Jesus Christ in our community and in the world. Pray for our neighbors in Mt. Lebanon and the surrounding communities that they might find a home here with us and that we can be a people who help others believe, grow, and serve in Christ and live out Christ s love. Thanks for your love and support and your deep faith! Blessings! Cindy

MUSICAL NOTES By Charles Bieri It was in 1912 that music publisher Dr. Adam Geibel asked C. Austin Miles to write a hymn that would be sympathetic in tone, breathing tenderness in every line; that would bring hope to the hopeless, rest for the weary, and downy pillows to dying beds. Miles has left this account of the writing of this hymn: One day in March, 1912, I was seated in the dark room, where I kept my photographic equipment and organ. I drew my Bible toward me; it opened to my favorite chapter, John 20 whether by chance or inspiration let each reader decide. That meeting of Jesus and Mary had lost none of its power to charm. As I read it that day, I seemed to be part of the scene. I became a silent witness to that dramatic moment in Mary s life, when she knelt before her Lord, and cried, Rabboni! My hands were resting on the Bible while I stared at the light blue wall. As the light faded, I seemed to be standing at the entrance of a garden, looking down a gently winding path, shaded by olive branches. A woman in white, with her head bowed, hand clasping her throat, as if to choke back the sobs, walked slowly into the shadows. It was Mary. As she came to the tomb, upon which she placed her hand, she bent over to look in, and hurried away. John, in a flowing robe, appeared, looking at the tomb; then came Peter, who entered the tomb, followed slowly by John. As they departed, Mary reappeared; leaning her head upon her arm at the tomb, she wept. Turning herself, she saw Jesus standing, so did I. I knew it was He. She knelt before Him, with arms outstretched and looking into His face cried Robboni! I awakened in full light, gripping the Bible, with muscles tense and nerves vibrating. Under the inspiration of this vision I wrote quickly as the words could be formed the poem exactly as it has since appeared. The same evening I wrote the music. Thus the hymn: (Hymnal, Page 227) I Come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses; and the voice I hear, falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses. And He walks with me and He talks to me, and he tells me I am his own, and the joy we share, as we tarry there, none other has ever known.

5 FREE SATURDAY, JUNE PM MT. LEBANON CHRISTIAN CHURCH KIDS ZONE GAMES FACE PAINTING CRAFTS PET FRIENDLY RAIN or SHINE STRAWBERRIES ICE CREAM HAMBURGERS HOT DOGS MUSIC 367 Cedar Blvd. MtLeboCC.org The Origin of Father's Day One Sunday in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a sermon honoring mothers. Her mother had died some years before, so her father had raised her by himself. Dodd wondered why there wasn t a day to honor fathers, so she arranged a tribute to her father at a church in Spokane, Washington. The date was June 19, Many people believe this was the beginning of Father s Day. Another account holds that a West Virginia church held a tribute service for fathers in 1908, following a mine explosion that killed 360 men. Regardless of which story is correct, President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to designate a special day to honor fathers. In 1924, he proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father s Day. GREETINGS I am the grandson of Ruth Stockdale and the greatgrandson on Hiram Denton who conceived the idea for your Church. Thanks to my grandmother and people like Frank Weigand, my great-grandfather's dream came true. I grew up in the Church and my parents were Charter Members. My parents were Richard and Virginia Thomas. I was part of your Church from the nursery downstairs through high school. Your Church is a very important Church. I'm tankful that I was part of it. I was able to build a strong foundation that has lasted me through all of these years. Most of the original members are not even living now. I hope that you will keep the tradition of the Church alive well into the future. God bless all of you, Keith Thomas

After crawling into Grandpa s lap, little Freddie asked, Were you in the ark with Noah, Grandpa? The Grandfather chuckled, Why, no, Son, I wasn t. The youngster persisted, Then why weren t you drowned? Filming at our church for a Netflix TV series Our church has been selected to be used for an episode in the Netflix series called Mindhunter, which is currently in its second season. As we understand it, part of the filming will simulate an Easter service. The staff and cast of the show will be using our church from June 11 th -15 th. Actually filming will be on June 13 th -14 th. We are excited that our church has been selected for this. Besides a crew and cast of 100 people, they also will be needing about 100 extras. Anyone can sign up to try to be an extra. We are guessing many of you will want to try to be part of this. They are to get forms to us with more information. I did hear you might need to commit up to 12 hours on each of the two days of filming to be an extra. We will get more information to everyone when we have more details. They will be filming inside and outside our church, including some street scenes. We would like to thank Jeff Hawn, Greg Newman and Chuck Sargent for their time and effort in meeting with the Netflix contacts to make this happen. The Winner The father of five won a raffle. He gathered his young children to ask who should get the present. Who s the most obedient? Dad asked. Who never talks back to Mom? Who does everything she says? Five small voices answered in unison, Okay, Dad, you get the present.
