Week 4: Paul LESSON OVERVIEW Today the children will learn about Saul/Paul and the spreading of God s Good News. VIDEO 1 SMALL GROUP 1 The purpose of this time is to build relationships with the children. It s important for children to feel welcomed and connected before engaging in active learning. Usually this activity is a simple game that encourages interaction. Take time to say each child s name and how glad you are to see each person! (Use the Shepherding Guide to make notes of what the children say during this time. Ask follow up questions next time you see the child at church.) VIDEO 2 SMALL GROUP 2 The purpose of this time is to introduce the day s lesson and review the previous lesson. Because this is a Biblical literacy curriculum, this segment is important for helping children build a cohesive understanding of the entire Bible. The questions and games are designed to provide repetition and reinforcement for helping children understand the Bible. VIDEO 3 SMALL GROUP 3 The purpose of this time is to teach the main content of the day s lesson. New information and the key lesson can be found during these activities. Provide children adequate time to process the new information. Feel free to skip questions, add questions or tweak the activities so that children are able to fully grasp the new stories and concepts. VIDEO 4 SMALL GROUP 4 The purpose of this time is to review the day s lesson. A Bible What s It? Game is always provided which includes review questions. Following the review questions, take time to encourage reflection. Ask open-ended questions that encourage children to apply the lesson specifically to their context. Consider making this a quiet time, followed by quiet prayer. MAKE IT YOUR OWN! What s In the Bible? gives you the freedom to customize your own curriculum. 3 PREPARATION Supplies: Video 1, 1 Bubble Card (Per Child), 1 Picture Card (Per Child), Pencils (1 Per Child) and Shepherding Guide (1 Box Per Child) Teacher Note: Each week, the children will be playing Who Said It? Encourage the children to think of a phrase they said during the week and write it on their Bubble Card. If you took pictures of children during Week 1, use those pictures in place of the Picture Cards. If not, encourage the children to draw pictures of themselves on the Picture Cards. Place all of the Picture Cards in a row on the floor while mixing up the Bubble Cards in a separate row. Encourage the children to match the Picture Card to the Bubble Card while guessing who said what this week. ACTIVITY PLAY: Video 1 Welcome the children! SAY It s good to learn about our friends at church. Let s learn more about each other today by playing a game called Who Said It? SAY First, draw a picture of yourself on the Picture Card. Then, I ll place your picture in a row on the floor. SAY Think of some helpful words you said to someone this week. Maybe you helped a friend with homework, or told your mom where the dog was hiding. Write it on your Bubble Card. When you ve finished writing, give your Bubble Card to me. Don t show or tell anyone what you wrote! PLACE the Bubble Cards in a row next to the Picture Cards. Mix them up so the Bubble Cards aren t next to the correct Picture Cards. ENCOURAGE the children to guess who said what! Match the Picture Card with the correct Bubble Card. Have fun guessing who said what! ASK a follow up question to each child: Who did you say the helpful words to? What did the person say in response? 8 PREPARATION Supplies: Video 2, Bible, Scissors, Dice, Biplane Explained Game Board, Game Pieces and Game Cards Teacher Note: Divide the children into two teams. Set up the board game with the game pieces on the start line. After a team answers each question correctly, encourage them to roll the dice and move the game piece forward. ACTIVITY PLAY: Video 2 SAY Let s play Biplane Explained! I will divide you into two teams. Each team will take turns asking questions to the other team using the game cards. When a team answers a question correctly, that team will roll the dice and move the game piece forward. The first team to reach the finish line is the winner! QUESTIONS & ANSWERS 1. If we follow Jesus, we become children of the King and we get to help God grow His kingdom! How does the Holy Spirit help us do these jobs? Answer: The Holy Spirit s power gives us courage and helps us to follow God wherever He leads us. 2. Name the fifth book of the New Testament. Answer: Acts 3. If you don t have access to a video player, read or sing the words on the following page. AFTER the SONG, LEAD the children in the following discussion: SAY I love the words from the song, Spreadin good news is so much fun when the good news is for everyone! SAY We can share God s love with our friends, our family, our neighbors, everyone. And, we can share God s love by telling them about God s great rescue plan. We can also share God s love by being kind to our friends, telling the truth to our parents and obeying our teachers. There are many ways to share God s love and good news with others. SAY Now it s your turn. How will you share God s love this week? Let s take a quiet moment to close our eyes, and listen to God. Ask God, How do you want me to share the good news of love this week? ENCOURAGE the children to share their ideas with the group. PRAY Let s pray together. What would you like to say to God today? In the meantime Peter had a vision A bunch of animals in a sheet And he had to make a decision Cuz a voice said, Peter, get up and eat! Now Peter was confused He didn t know how to choose These animals weren t on the list for eating by the Jews. And then somebody rang his bell He said, Who s there? They said, Pray tell would you visit our man Cornelius? He isn t a Jew, but he d really be blessed And Peter at once knew what it meant And why his vision had been sent So he said, Let s go!
