Here are just a few. Upcoming Events: September 10 th Start of Sunday Church School for 3 year old through adults. Come and join the learning. September 14 th and 17 th Nominating ballots for Congregation Council members will be cast in the context of Worship. This Churchly Ballot process raises up Spiritual Leaders. September 17 th Pork Loin Dinner and Carnival will follow the 11:00 a.m. service. The high school youth will be providing games and activities for the younger kids. There will be a free will offering for Seventh Grade Confirmation Camp and other youth projects. Menu will include pork loin sandwiches, pasta salad, potato chips, applesauce and lemonade. 2 CONGREGATION COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS August 15, 2017 Meeting was preceded by a family picnic. Text: Matthew 15:21-28 Treasurer s Report: Summer giving has been strong. At the end of July, giving had exceeded expenses by more than $8,000. STEWARDSHIP 2017 Year to Date giving goal $247,589 Year to Date giving $238,513 Year to Date Major Maintenance $8,921 August giving goal $24,967 August giving to date $22,984 August Major Maintenance $961 September giving goal $33,290 Branch reports were received. God s Work Our Hands Sunday will be October 1, Plans for the day are in the early stages. Update received from Staff Study Team. Churchly ballot was discussed. All Branch meeting will be Sunday, September 10, 2017, 5:30 7:00 p.m. Next Council meeting will be Monday, September 18, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. Stewardship Thanks for your continued strong giving over the summer months! Thank you to all who helped with our Outdoor Worship and Brunch on August 20, 2017, it was a wonderful morning!!! Fall Stewardship Emphasis EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY is the theme for our Fall Stewardship Emphasis. A sermon series on the theme begins the weekend of Sunday, September 17 th. Stay tuned for details of an exciting congregational event on the morning of Sunday, October 8th. The emphasis will culminate with Response Sunday on October 15 th. Join us as we explore what it means to live lives of Extravagant Generosity!! to the Cross Connections Branch for the great events they planned for Summer Worship +. A good time was had by all. 4 Churchly Ballot Timeline In 2009, Augustana began using a Churchly Ballot for the raising up of Spiritual Leaders for Congregation Council. As a reminder, here is the basic timeline for the process in the coming few months: September Period of prayer begins for raising up spiritual leaders for our Congregation Council. Information about discernment and election is shared with the congregation. Thursday, September 14, 2017 and Sunday, September 17, 2017 At each of our three worship services, nomination ballots will be received. September 18 September 29 Current Council members make personal visits to all those who have been nominated by the congregation. They are invited to discern whether God is calling them to council leadership. Wednesday, October 11 Deadline for all those nominated to submit biographical information for November Newsletter if they will allow themselves to be on the ballot, or to withdraw. Sunday, November 12, 2017, 9:45 at the Congregational Meeting Part 1 - Elections. All are encouraged to keep this process in their prayers. All Congregation Cross Connection Event!! Annual Toreador Tailgate Party before the game with Perry Senholz Park (south of Goeppinger Field on Mamie Eisenhower) Friday, September 15th 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. Grilled hamburgers and hotdogs will be each. Drinks will be provided Bring a dish to share, your own table service and lawn chairs. Thank you The family of Tom Duitsman would like to thank Augustana Lutheran Church for the beautiful service given by Pastor Martens and the funeral committee for a wonderful luncheon. The Social Ministry Branch is looking for new members. The Branch is also looking for someone to coordinate the monthly blood pressure checks. 5 ADULT EDUCATION Adult Forum will resume Sunday, September 10 th. On that day, we will begin our study of By Heart: Conversation with Martin Luther s Small Catechism. Come and join both our pastors as we prepare for the upcoming 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. See you Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in the Fireside room. WELCA New WELCA Booklets will be available starting Sunday, September 17th and at the Salad Potluck. Remember to pick yours up. ALL WOMEN of Augustana are invited to The Fall Salad Potluck, Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Each Circle member is being asked to bring a salad to share. Esther Circle will be serving, and Hannah Circle will provide the devotions and program. Please feel free to bring a friend or two! The Circles will meet the third week in September. Esther and Ruth Circles meet on Wednesday September 20, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively, and the Hannah Circle will meet on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. For Hannah Circle, bring a brown bag and enjoy supper as we do our lesson. God s work. Our hands. Sunday, October 1, 2017 We will be sent out from each of the worship services that day to serve our neighbors in the community. We will be lending helping hands to those who are in need. Projects will include yard work, light household and chores. Lunch will be provided as well. Stay tuned for further details and get ready to be a part of God s Work by serving our neighbors with our hands (and feet) on Sunday, October 1st!!!! Quilting still takes place on Wednesday mornings when there are no Circle meetings. Extra hands are always welcome! Anyone can tie a knot, even if you re not an excellent seamstress, your help is welcome. Come! Join the fun! School Kits are still available to be filled. Empty backpacks are on a table in the back of the sanctuary with instructions inside. The deadline for the backpacks will be September 24, Please help with this much-needed project. Baby Care Kits are shipped with the quilts and school kits in the fall and spring. There are lists of what is needed for the kits taped to the outside of the tub under the table in the fellowship hall. We would like to invite you to bring any of the items on the list and place them in the tub. Thank you for your help with this project. Monetary donations are also welcome. Deadline for the items to be brought is September 24,
6 YOUTH NEWS Fall Sunday School: The first day of Sunday School will be September 10, 2017 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Special Note: Each child must have a registration form completed every year. Information is used for all youth activities during the year. Information needed includes insurance data and health information on each child. We also want to know where parents/guardians will be during Sunday school time in case of an emergency. IN THEIR HANDS 3 rd grade students and their parents will prepare for the presentation of their Bibles. Sessions are scheduled for October 1, October 15 & October 22. Parents will present the Bible to their 3 rd grader on Sunday, October 29. Three Year Old Milestone We will be celebrating a milestone for all three year old children starting Sunday School during the 11:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, September 10th. In preparation for this event, please attend the special class on Sunday September 10th. Please plan to be there with your child.
