2 Wellstreams Living Waters for the Journey in Faith By Sister Lauretta Leipzig WISDOM TO KNOW I picked up a book at a garage sale, The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness and Effectiveness, written by Susan Humphreys. She tells us that this is a book about the teachings of Epictetus, an ancient pagan Greek philosopher. He was born around 55 CE and taught in Rome until he was exiled to Greece by the emperor, Domitian. We may find this book title and its description a bit uninteresting and even dull and challenging. But we might be amazed when Epictetus teaching starts with a simple sentence to which we all can readily relate. Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one important principle: some things are within our control and some things are not. We may well know what this author is telling us! Many of our life experiences have already taught us this. But let s give some of the ramifications of her opening statement a little more thought. Perhaps this concept may remind us of the Serenity Prayer that asks that we be granted the serenity to accept the things we cannot change and the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference. The prayer starts with Grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change. This doesn t mean that we won t stress over those things, but it points out the need to accept and reach inner peace about them as our goal. In reference to this topic, therapist and author David Richo lists five unavoidable givens that challenge us and come to visit us many times over in our lifetime. Everything changes and ends Things do not always go according to plan Life is not always fair Pain is part of life People are not loving and loyal all the time Richo speaks of an authentic life as saying yes to many things in life just as they are. In other words, our path is what is! Maybe we have it wrong and need to alter our thinking. We need to ask ourselves several questions. Do we want to get our way all the time or flow with life, make sure our plans go our way or trust that surprises will open new vistas for us? Are we intent on getting a fair deal or to be upright and loving people? To avoid pain or learn from it, to be loved by everyone or show love to everyone? Serenity asks us to accept what we cannot change rather than try to be in control all the time. Control is being set on specific outcomes being wrongly confident of knowing what is best for us. One of many inspirational quotes written by two authors known as Marc and Angel is: When you stop worrying about what you cannot control, you have the time to change the things you can control and that changes everything! Granted, it is our attitudes and reactions that give us trouble. There are things in life we absolutely cannot change. Blaming someone or something is foolish, yet we do it. Finger pointing is futile, yet we do it. Rather, we must start with identifying the problem and, if it s changeable, change it! But we need wisdom to know when to try to change a situation and when we cannot do anything about it. Example: We can t change the past, only learn from it. We can only change the present and we don t know what will happen in the future. Clearly then, we can t always control what happens each day, but we can control how we react. And, the more we examine our attitudes and work on improving ourselves, the less we are participants of stormy reactions. If we read between the lines, we might stop blaming others those who are different, who think or act differently, who believe differently from us, etc. Accept the things we cannot change! There are those who speak of the control mode. They compare this mode to someone in a small boat, paddling upstream against the current, which is very difficult. But if they turn the boat around and let go of the oars, the boat will calmly float downstream. The key is to let go of the oars! The fact that there is much in life we cannot control means that we need God s grace, the spiritual complement to effort. When we think we cannot get through a situation and yet we do, the grace of God s life is in us. When we cannot find the light, and yet, we do, the grace of the Light of the World is working through us. When we find it difficult to accept what we cannot control or change, the grace of the Spirit is breathing through us. Once we realize that we are supported by the grace of God to see what can be changed and what cannot, we will understand that being in control may not be in our best interest. Learning this lesson will result in knowing and accepting the fact that God s plan is continually working for our good. So, we pray that God will give us the wisdom and the insight to change what we can and the grace and courage to accept what we cannot! 2 Saint Anne Church January 13, 2019 stannebarrington.org

Last year, the children made robots operated by remote controls. This year, we focused on creating a program that would move the robots autonomously! The focus has been on getting the robots to move forward, turn in a given direction and a given number of degrees and stop on a specific color using the color sensor. The children have learned many things about programing as well as the importance of teamwork! Attention all 4 year old Pre-K Students! You are invited to join us on Thursday, January 31st, from 9:00-10:30 a.m. for KINDERGARTEN FOR A DAY during Catholic Schools Week! Children will spend the morning in a kindergarten classroom. Parents will meet a kindergarten teacher and the school principal in the Tech Lab where we will lead you through a presentation about our program. Human Concerns RECYCLE OLD AND OBSOLETE CELL PHONES Help the Elgin Community Crisis Center convert old phones into cash and offset higher utility costs in their shelter, which houses victims of domestic violence from surrounding communities Keep cell phones out of landfills where they pose an environmental threat But what do you do with obsolete cell phones? During January, Faithjustice offers a solution: Put phones with batteries in the baskets on the hearth in the Gathering Space. Do not include accessories or adaptors and, if able, delete all phone numbers. The phones will be turned over to Shelter Alliance to refurbish, resell or recycle. All proceeds from this effort benefit the Community Crisis Center, a shelter in Elgin, which serves survivors of domestic violence, including women and children from our area. The Center receives anywhere from $1.00 to $30.00 per viable phone. The more current the phone, the better! Phone donations also serve environmental efforts to keep electronic equipment and batteries out of local landfills. Old cell phones are disassembled and parts are salvaged using eco-friendly methods. Shelter Alliance (SA) is a program of GRC Wireless Recycling, a private sector company dedicated exclusively to socially responsible cell phone recycling. With over 2,000 active participants in 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico, Shelter Alliance is the largest cell phone recycling program in the U.S. Shelter Alliance participants have earned over $4,000, since When they began their mission in 2001, they discovered that cell phone fundraising revenue was primarily funneled to national nonprofits, leaving local organizations without their due share. Additionally, large surpluses of phones from 911 emergency phone collections left social service organizations with offices full of phones and no responsible recycling solution. Shelter Alliance was established to offer local community organizations a viable, profitable fundraising option. Years later, they still hold true to their founding principles: accountability, individualized attention to each participant and responsiveness. 14 Human Concerns HOLY FAMILY PADS SITE FOR THE HOMELESS Volunteers from Saint Anne Catholic Community are needed Holy Family s PADS site, a Sunday evening shelter for people facing homelessness, is in its 18th season. It takes many volunteers to set up, provide and serve meals, work shifts, clean up as well as offer an atmosphere of comfort and safety. 1st shift begins at 6:30 p.m., and helps to prepare, serve dinner, clean up and get guests ready to bed down for the night. We are especially in need of volunteers on Sundays, 2nd shift, from 11:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m., and Mondays, 3rd shift, from 3:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m. 2nd shift volunteers prepare sack lunches and are available if guests need assistance during the night. 3rd shift gets the guests up and moving and prepares, serves breakfast and cleans up. Clean-up shift, from 6:00-7:00 a.m., wipes down the pads and pillow cases, gathers the laundry and cleans up the site. Training is provided. Even if you can work one time over the season, which runs from Monday, October 1st through Saturday, April 30th, it would be a big help. A brief orientation is required for new volunteers at JOURNEYS, 1140 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine (near Arlington Race Track). 16 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD, LITURGICAL YEAR, 2019 (21C) 1st Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Psalm 29: 1-2, 3-4, 9-10 Rx = The Lord will bless his people with peace. 2nd Reading: Acts of the Apostles 10:34-38 Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. It is appropriate that we end Christmas Time, that series comprised of The Nativity of the Lord, The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God and The Epiphany of the Lord with the celebration of The Baptism of the Lord; the next day, Monday, begins the period of winter days of Ordinary Time. The Lectionary closes this series of the Christmas Time which recalls Jesus birth, infancy and youth with an account of his baptism as an adult which simultaneously signals the start of his public ministry. Beginning today, we will spend eight weeks (with one exception, John s gospel on 2nd Sunday) in hearing Luke s stories of Jesus ministry in Galilee; the Lectionary beckons us to examine various aspects of discipleship. In this first (Isaiah 42:1-9) of the four so-called Servant Songs, Isaiah speaks of Israel as the servant whom God has chosen, in whom God delights, upon whom God has sent the spirit to bring justice to the nations (v.1). Isaiah is very clear: speaking with the voice of a prophet, he says to the Chosen (the Israelites) that Israel is to be light for the nations (v.6), that is, to be light for those outside itself in other words, to the pagans; that is the meaning of the plural of the word nation. With gentleness, patience, great solicitude but with firmness, God s servant will teach and bring forth justice on the earth (v.4), that is, for all its inhabitants! [From a much later vantage point, the Christian community, looking backward, identified this servant as The Christ.] At vv.6 and 7, God reminds the servant in precise terms that he is to liberate all peoples from all kinds of darkness. The metaphor in v.7, to open the eyes of the blind, means to bring people to be in God s light, to be in God s justice, to have no disparity; it is to have right relationship; it is to be righteous; it is to be in covenant; it is to be healed; it is to have shalom God s peace (see today s psalm refrain). The second reading is from Luke; in his gospel, Luke unmistakably emphasizes that salvation is for all humankind. He does no less in his second book, the Acts of the Apostles, where he continues this emphasis in his stories about the early postresurrection communities. The story this Sunday (perhaps read the short chp. 10) describes Peter s astonishing entry into the house of Cornelius, a pagan; the culture says such an act would render Peter unclean! But astoundingly, Peter declares to the assembled gentiles that he now understands that God shows no partiality, that salvation is also for them! (vv.34, 35) The good news is: The Christ comes to preach peace shalom not only to the people of Israel but to all for he is Lord of all (v.36); God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power and he went about doing good and healing all (v.38). (Shades of Isaiah!) The end of this chapter clinches it: after witnessing the out pouring of the Spirit upon the gentiles, Peter proceeds to baptize not only Cornelius but all his gentile household and guests (vv.44-48) to the astonishment of the circumcised believers in The Christ. At Christmas Midnight, Luke s gospel proclaimed that in the very city of David that is called Bethlehem, there is born one who is Christ [i.e., the Anointed, the Messiah] and Lord; this good news of great joy will be for all the people [the Chosen] but the announce- 16 Saint Anne Church January 13, 2019 stannebarrington.org

17 Sharing the Living Story ment is made to an outcast group: to shepherds! Last week, at The Epiphany, Matthew s Gospel tells that Herod, the king of the Judeans (Jews), does not know where the Christ was to be born! Yet, this Christ is shown being paid homage by magi, pagan dignitaries from beyond the regions of Israel (no local shepherds in Matthew!) who prostrate themselves and offer gifts customarily associated with kings! What irony: The King of the Jews is ignorant of the ancient biblical tradition of his own people whom he governs yet the foreign pagans from distant lands know this child and give him greatest honor. What are these choices of the Lectionary trying to tell us? Whether the reader is a Jewish or a Gentile Christian, Luke s gospel as well as his Acts of the Apostles reminds the in-group (the Chosen) that they are not exclusive and assures the out-group (the gentiles) that they are included. In the Hebrew Scripture selection, God s servant is to bring forth justice to the nations and be a light for the nations (recall: nations = all those who are outside the Chosen!) Turning to today s gospel, the cultural aspects of first century Palestine once again open vistas that enlarge our understanding. Public acknowledgment of fatherhood is the best legitimization that a child can have for it assures it a position in the social order thereby making it possible for the child to move in a prescribed manner within that order. Therefore, to the Mediterranean sensibility, it is ultimate ascribed honor that is given to Jesus because it is God who is overheard making the claim, You are my beloved Son; with you, I am well pleased (v.22); what better patron can one have than God! The ones who hear this astounding claim are the crowds who came to be baptized by John: among them, tax collectors and soldiers (v.10 ff). Recall that in this culture, all claims to honor are immediately challenged to see if that status can be diminished by shaming. In the very next chapter (4), Jesus passes this test and upholds his honor in the face of temptation. Thus begins his ministry in Galilee. As we shall see in the gospel pericopes until Lent, the Lectionary will focus on Luke s perspective about what the criteria are for those who wish to answer the call of the Baptist: Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance (v.8). All this involved explanation; So What?? Jesus was baptized as an adult; most of us were baptized as babies. Today, after so many years, what do we make of our own baptism; do we ponder the words that were spoken of us and for us? What were those ritual acts that were done? Sometimes we hear baptism described as the initiation into the Body of Christ. Can we recount any stories of when we may have felt that we had entered a community, the Body of Christ? We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
