From the Pastor... Church Family, We Are Growing We are quickly entering a busy season for church, which means lots of opportuni es for making an impact on the lost around us! This Relate sermon series is all about that. We are seeing some great growth not just in vaca oners but also in new local people to our church. We have had 6 new people join the church in the past 6 weeks, our current Discovery Course (new member s class) has 17 people registered! It s an exci ng me at First Bap st as we welcome new people and grow. So as you walk from your car, as you drink coffee in our Sunday morning fellowship me, as you enter your Sunday School class, and as you find a seat in a sanctuary, look for people who could be new here. Be inten onal to welcome them to our church family. Great Losses for our Church This has been a tough year so far as we have lost a couple of great men of God: Richard Wheeler and William Barre. William in par cular was so excited about his new role on our staff, and he and I had some great plans to expand some ministries in which he was involved. However, we know where both of these men are, that their death was no surprise to our Father, and He will walk with these families and our church through these losses. Con nue to reach out to these two families to extend love and care to them. New Greeter Ministry One exci ng new ministry we are preparing to launch is a Greeter Team. Our current Usher Team does a great job at welcoming people into the Worship Service and helping to seat people. This new Greeter Team will basically work on the outside of the buildings before Sunday School and Worship to help direct people to parking spots when the lots fill, to welcome people as they walk toward the buildings, and to give direc ons as needed. These will be the first faces our members and visitors see, so this is a cri cal role. If you are interested in volunteering for this team, call Paule e Gardner at the church at We plan to have a training mee ng to begin this exci ng new ministry in late March. Men s Ministry Event We are also star ng a new event as the front door to our men s ministry on Saturday, April 6. We already host some great men s Bible studies, so this is being designed to a ract those men who might never come to a church service or Bible study as their first contact, but who might be drawn to a church s fishing clinic. We will be conduc ng an evening for men that will include a fishing clinic with Fuzzy Davis, a low 2 country boil, some men-led worship, and a great me together. As we try to become all things to all people so that we might win some, consider someone who you might invite to this event, and even consider paying their way. The cost is $10/person which covers dinner, the clinic, and the en re event. We are hos ng this in the Student Building. For dinner prepara ons, we need to know who is coming. To RSVP for you and any guests, call Paule e again at with the number of people coming to the Men s Night. Please RSVP by Wednesday, April 3. Summer 2019 Our summer ministry will look different this summer. While we are s ll partnering with and conduc ng Week of Champions, VBS, and a youth camp on our property, we will also take some Wednesday nights during the summer to do some very different things that provide varied opportuni es for fellowship and for evangelis c events. We will be pu ng this informa on out in the next few weeks, so listen up as we announce this on a Sunday morning soon. Thank You Finally, I want to thank you! I have had several of our snowbird families who have recently gone home tell me in the past couple weeks about how welcome they have felt into our church these past few months. Some, with tears in their eyes, have gone on about how they feel loved and a sense of belonging here. First Bap st, well done! Let s not miss people whether they are here for a week or here for the rest of their life, let s love those whom God brings us. What a beau ful day, Sunday, February 24, 2019, when three of Henry and Patricia Goss grandsons were bap zed during our morning worship service. What a great tes mony of grandparents and parents leading their grandchildren and children to follow the Lord in Believers Bap sm. In Christ, Brett Myers

Children s Ministry Children s Ministry Ka e and Hetch Cal On Sunday, February 24th, Ka e and Hetch Cal, missionaries to Guatamala, working with Wycliffe Bible Translators, shared with the children in Children s Church, a li le bit about their mission work, par cularly what Wycliffe Bible Translators does around the world and specifically in Guatemala. Using jars of M&M s, Ka e and Hetch Cal helped the kids learn that over 7,000 languages exist in the world today, and learned that about 1,500 languages s ll have no scripture at all, and only about 450 have the en re Bible in their language. That s a lot of people that are unable to read a Bible in their own language. Hetch spoke to the children in a dialect from Guatemala and asked if they understood him. Of course, they did not. The children were given Bibles wri en in a different language and were asked if they could read it. Of course, they could not. Those illustra ons drove home to them how hard it is for some people to learn of Jesus, because they cannot hear or read the Word in their own language. The kids also learned that Bible transla on takes a team of partners, from translators to teachers to mechanics, pilots, and doctors, lots of people are involved. They learned that they - the children - are also involved in missions through their giving and prayers as well as their sweet le ers of encouragement. Ka e and Hetch were thankful for the opportunity to share this informa on with children, helping show them a li le bit more of their passion and calling as missionaries. Ka e and Hetch will be returning to be in Guatemala full- me very soon. We ask the en re church to be in prayer for them and their work. Awana Sparky Award Awana leaders, Wendy Gudz, Samantha Neville, and Sheila Kelca congratulate Brooks. He was awarded the Sparky Award for completing his Awana Sparks book. Look for this sweet face around the church campus and congratulate him on his hard work, and thank the Awana leaders for consistently helping the children in Awana learn all they can about God and the Bible. Congratulations! Kid s Matter to God and FBCHHI! 3

Student Ministry March PM For King and Country Concert: For King and Country is a great Chris an band and they will be in concert at the Savannah Civic Center, March 10th. We have 25 reserved ckets for the concert and would love for your student to go. Each cket costs $20.00; the church is covering the rest. Look for the church bus in the Lowe s parking lot in Blu on, behind Chick-Fil-A. The bus will leave promptly at 5:00 PM so please be a few minutes early. The concert begins at 7:00 PM. We should be back to the Lowe s parking lot about 10:00 PM where you can pick-up your student. How can you help: Please make sure your student has eaten before they come and that you have sent money for any refreshments they would like at the concert. Please get your $20.00 for a cket to First Bap st as soon as you can. Tickets are first-come, first-served basis. March 6:30 PM Answers in Genesis: Our New Study Series Answers in Genesis begins on Wednesday night, March 20th at 6:30 PM. We will be looking at the first 11 chapters of Genesis and learning why we can believe that the Bible gives an accurate account of crea on and how the origins of life began. We will also look at how the secular view of evolu on is trying to chip away at our belief founda on, trying to make us doubt that the Biblical account is true. See you in the Student Building on Wednesdays. Contact Brian Parker, Minister of Youth and Families, for more information at

From the Minister of Music One of the key passages on worship in all of the scriptures is found in the fourth chapter of John s gospel. It is here that Jesus breaks through the social boundaries of the day by engaging in conversation with a particular Samaritan woman many of us know her as the woman at the well. When this Samaritan woman diverted the conversation from her own troubled domestic life to the theology of worship, she gave our Lord an opportunity to express words that rivet our attention and rock our assumptions. She asked a question about art. Jesus responded with the issue of the heart. She asked Jesus where worship ought to be done. Jesus responded with what worship is. Many of our questions about worship are like those of the Samaritan woman. We ask where and how questions, for we want to settle issues of form. Jesus answers cut across form to deal with reality, with spirit, and with truth. This telling passage of scripture brings us to the reality that God is actively seeking true worshipers. Genesis chapter four describes the offerings that were presented by Cain and Abel. Some readers have assumed that Abel s offering was accepted by God because his offering involved the blood of the fi rstlings of the fl ock, whereas the offering of Cain, lacking blood, was unacceptable. It is more likely, however, that Abel s offering was accepted by God because of his heart attitude. Hebrews 11:4 tells us that it was by faith that Abel pleased God. So from the beginning, God was looking for true worshipers. It is important to realize that God s desire for worship does not imply that there is something lacking in Himself. He does not need our worship. In the eternities that preceded our creation, God has always been complete, perfect, and suffi cient. But God, the Creator, desires the adoration of His people. He looks for it. He gazes out for it. He cares about it. When we come like Abel came, we fi nd ourselves in the center of His desire. God has a desire regarding man which He expects, looks for, and demands. The emphasis in all Scripture is not on what the believer does in isolation, but on what the believer is, and how what the believer is relates to what he or she does. Serving God is a matter of one s entire being. So it is with our worship. In Micah 6:6-7, the prophet pictures an individual coming before the Lord asking what is necessary to be pleasing in His eyes. With what shall I come to Yahweh and bow myself before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, with yearling calves? Does Yahweh take delight in thousands of rams, in ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my fi rst-born for my rebellious acts, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? Micah then reminds the questioner of the teaching in the book of Deuteronomy: He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Yahweh require of you, but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? God requires something within us that leads to outward acts of genuine spirituality. God desires true worshipers. He actively seeks those who relate to Him from the inner man, from the heart. True worshipers come before the true God in spirit and in truth. Keep looking up! Richard 55

Wonder of Wonders The world is fi lled with wonders, writes Nathaniel Olson. Consider chemistry: Salt is formed by two poisonous substances (sodium and chlorine). The alnico magnet, the world s strongest, contains three nonmagnetic substances (aluminum, nickel and cobalt). And water consists of oxygen (which is fl ammable) and hydrogen (which burns easily); yet water puts out fi res! That pales in comparison to the wonder of salvation through Jesus. Every day, Olson writes, Jesus transforms fi lthy, hopeless sinners into new, forgiven creations. On the skid rows of our cities, in wealthy and poor homes, in jungles whenever any soul wants Christ, the wonder of the new birth is taking place. Our God is the true Wonder of wonders. None can compare (Psalm 40:5). The key of the day Prayer should be the key of the day and the lock of the night. George Herbert Food for Thought and Just for Fun From great to good Jim Collins 2001 book Good to Great featured companies that had made the leap to greatness. Years later, many of them are no longer great; some aren t even around. Should Christians seek greatness? After all, our attempts to be great wealthy, powerful, successful, famous often become the enemies of our doing the good God commands. God s Word fl ips on its head the saying good is the enemy of great. The meek, Jesus teaches, will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5). Whoever would be great among you, he says, must be your servant (Mark 10:43, ESV). One of Jesus most famous parables is called the Good Samaritan, not the Great Samaritan. And goodness, not greatness, is a fruit of the Spirit. Christians and churches are called not to greatness but to doing good for the sake of the world. Let s shift our focus from great to good. Based on From Great to Good, Homiletics, January-February
