It was supposed to be a mid-week sojourn back to Rochelle to visit our daughter and grandson and give them our encouragement in some difficult times. Our son, Steve, was back from Germany on term break from the university where he teaches. He would go with us, visit family and old friends in his old stomping ground. As the former pastor at First Presbyterian Church, I would sneak in and out of town, barely noticed. Yeah right. The headache that bothered Steve even before his flight from Germany kept growing more persistent and more intense. We treated it as the result of tension and exhaustion, travel and the time zone changes, as a migraine and sinus headache. Nothing worked. Nothing soothed the pain or slowed its increase. Finally, on a Thursday evening with Steve writhing in unbearable pain, it was too much. We rushed him to the emergency room in Rochelle and after a CT scan and examination were told that he had a tumorous growth in the center of his brain. It was filling with blood and growing. He would be life-flighted to the nearest Neuro Intensive Care Hospital. We headed for St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford. He flew by helicopter. We flew by car. After an examination and an MRI the neurosurgeon planned to do the surgery on Saturday morning letting Steve rest all of Friday. However, as the pain intensified, the doctor moved the surgery to Friday evening. Around 5:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Eastern time) he met with us and explained what he would do. He would enter through the top of Steve s skull. He would remove a golf ball sized mass of tumor and blood from the center of his brain. It was a very dangerous surgery he stated grimly and repeatedly. He listed all the possible results - loss of speech, memory, motor skills life. There was no other choice, he stated flatly. Then it was time. The attendants wheeled him out of the room, Melany and I walking alongside and a trail of friends making their way to the waiting room. We gave him one last kiss, one last I love you, and one last prayer. We waited. We circled in prayer with our friends holding hands, a voice breaking the silence as someone would offer a spoken prayer. We closed with the words of Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. That Psalm on which I had been preaching, the words I had spoken and examined the previous Sunday, were my Psalm, our cry of faith in the darkness, our reaching out for the hand of God in the shadow of death. We sat, munched on snacks, talked, welcomed more friends and waited. Around three hours later the doctor strode into the waiting area. The look on his face and the spring in his step signaled something good. It was better. The surgery went perfectly; the patient responded well; the outlook was very good. We gathered in a circle again. We prayed, thanked God, and tagged our prayers with the Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Continued on page 4 Respite Care 12

2 Page 2 From your Interim Associate Pastor... Mike's Musings from Rev. Michael E. Beckstrom Involved in Something Special When have you realized you were involved in something special? For me, one of those recent realizations occurred at the tail end of a Bridgeville Ministerial Association meeting. Can you believe it? You see, I ve been involved in a few ministerial associations. I ve seen a lot of people grudgingly drag themselves into those meetings a bit late, only to exhaustingly drag themselves out a bit early. I ve seen petty arguments break out among the pastors of different (and perhaps competing ) congregations. I ve seen ministerial associations joylessly trudge together through their business. But that, my friends, is most certainly not the Bridgeville Ministerial Association! Let me tell you about how special we have it here in Bridgeville. At the monthly meetings of the Bridgeville Ministerial Association, I regularly see a group of pastors and lay leaders come together to earnestly seek God s face. I regularly see a devoted group of disciples joyfully lay hands on one another in rather spontaneous bursts of prayer. I regularly see the leaders of the Church in Bridgeville pour their hearts out in prayer for you, Bethany Presbyterian Church, as well as for our brothers and sisters at First United Methodist, St. Barbara Roman Catholic, First Baptist, Vineyard Church, The Bridgeville Food Bank, and all the other missions and ministries in the Bridgeville Community. There is absolutely no competition. There is absolutely no animosity. There is absolutely no misery. There really is nothing but sheer joy in coming together as the One Body of Christ. When have you realized you were involved in something special? The reason I tell you all this is because I want to invite you to join me in something special that God is doing in Bridgeville. On Wednesday, April 13, the Bridgeville Ministerial Association is going to meet together here at Bethany Presbyterian Church and we re going to be hungry. See, we re going to start a 24 hour fast together at noon on April 12, and we re going to break our fast together on April 13 here in the Welcome Center. The purpose of our fast is to seek God s will for our life together as One Body in the Bridgeville Community all the members of Christ s Church in this little neighborhood. We feel truly called to come together as One Body and to be more intentional about being the Body of Christ together. So we re going to be asking God how we can all come together to God s glory to make a difference in the world together. I m inviting you, if you can, to join us in our fast. In the very least, I m asking you to pray. Pray for the Bridgeville Ministerial Association; pray for the Bridgeville Community; pray for God s guidance; pray that together, we will show the love of God and live out the union into which we ve been called together in Christ Jesus. I see God doing a great work in our midst, and I truly can t wait to see what lies ahead for the Church in this community! Let s begin by humbly praying and fasting. And may we all be awakened to the realization that we are involved in something truly special!

3 Page 3 Upward Basketball and Cheerleading It is hard to believe that the 2011 Basketball and Cheerleading season has come to a close. All the planning and hard work has really paid off! With practices starting in January, and the last game played on April 2 nd, we saw a lot of families and members of the community come in to Bethany this winter. We had 275 children participating this year! Our games lasted for 10 hours on Saturdays and practices occurred every day of the week (except Tuesday). There were more than 100 coaches, referees and volunteers who made this all happen. We would like to thank everyone involved in Upward. From those who set up the gym every Saturday to those who cooked in the kitchen, from those who coached or refereed a game to those who announced, and everyone in between, your hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. We couldn t have made it through the season without all the volunteers we had this year. There is a place for you in the Upward Basketball and Cheerleading program! With the growth we have seen over the last three years, we know this program will continue to reach many children in the community. In order to reward these kids with a quality experience, we will need more people involved next year. Please start to pray now as to what your role in Upward will be in There will be a summer day camp offered again this year, so please watch the bulletin for more information. And, as always, thank you for your prayers and support for Upward at Bethany! 4 Page 4 Musical Notes by John Henninger The Rest of the Story I can remember somebody telling this story once, but it seems quite a while ago, and I cannot remember who it was that told it. Coming to church on Easter is only getting part of the story! Now we can all agree that the Easter story is the most important part of the Christian story! The fact that God came to this earth to be born in a very humble way, teach and live as one of us, and then walk willingly to the cross in order that we might have eternal life is quite a story. Part of the quote above (you know, the one that I cannot remember who it was that said it!) was trying to make the point that the Easter story is so much greater when taken in context with the Holy Week story. The fact that Jesus rose from the dead gives us great reason to celebrate! But if you attend on Palm Sunday, on Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday, and walk with Jesus through Jerusalem and ultimately to the cross, the Easter alleluias seem to sparkle even more. So plan on coming, and being a part of the story! Palm Sunday, April 17 featuring children s processional and combined adult and children s choir anthem at 10:45 a.m. Maundy Thursday, April 21 7:00 p.m. Communion service, remembering Christ s institution of the Lord s supper. Good Friday, April 22 7:00 p.m. Good Friday service remembering Christ s ultimate sacrifice for us. See you in church, where, together, we can all tell the story! Continued from page 1 Through the valley Much work was yet to be done, much yet to observe in Steve s recovery, much to wait upon including a pathology report. (The tumor was confirmed as benign). But the news was good, very good. The blessings flowed. The Lord was and is our shepherd. As we at Bethany continue in our walk through Psalm 23, may we see it not as a collection of words, a soothing Scripture for just funerals and wall plaques, but as a promise from the living God to you and me, a promise to be the Shepherd of our lives, through all our joys and struggles and sorrows, and, yes, through the valley of the shadow of death. See you on Sunday as we continue our journey together. Praise God! John Hamilton Attention All Bethany Golfers: The Annual Church Golf Outing will be held at Fort Cherry Golf Course on June 25th. Mark your calendar and plan to attend. For more information call Ron Gastgeb at Please see my note to you elsewhere in this newsletter.

8 Page 8 From your Interim CE Director... Barb Crawford Yea! Yea! - April as you all know by now I personally love the warm weather and its coming! What a wonderful time of year everything coming out of its winter rest and nothing is better than the blessing Easter brings us with our risen LORD! We have had quite a bit of discussion in various committee meetings and on a personal level about the ability of communication with one another. From my stand point I see that so many of us would rather talk amongst ourselves or behind someone s back than to directly approach the person that we may be questioning or even talking about. I am guilty of that! Why do we do that? Is it fear of what they will say do we think we may be chastised are we afraid of knowing we were wrong or our idea might not be the right one! I m truly not sure. But I have seen situations escalated much more than they ever needed to be just because we did not say anything to the right person in question. Wouldn t it be nice if we had a question, a suggestion or even a problem with something or someone if we went straight to the source and had face to face open discussion? When doing this we have to remember that everyone has feelings and their own ideas and ways of doing things so we always have to be open to listening and then discussing. Maybe there truly was a great reason for how things transpired. As leaders of the different programs we must always be open to suggestions and be congenial and communicate with others gently and never be abrupt or discouraging. When someone wants to help we must always find a place for them. We can never have too much help or ever turn anyone away! There is a place for everyone!! And from Matthew 7:1-3, Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. And if we all could live by the Golden Rule (Matthew 7, 12) So, in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. So what does this all mean to me and to you? Can we try harder I definitely think so and what better programs we would have, what better leaders we would be and as better Christians while we are talking the talk we could also be walking the walk. I know I m going to try harder. May God Bless you and may you be a Blessing to God! NEW MEMBERS CLASS We welcomed the following New Members who were received at the 10:45 service March 20th. Don t forget your food bank non-perishable food item. In Our Own Hometown The need for food is even here in our own hometown. The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank works hard to provide food in so many ways. Hundreds of food pantries throughout the county, special senior citizen boxes are packed, programs to feed children, and the Produce to People Program. Produce to People serves 10 counties and operates every week. Ten people from Bethany volunteered to serve the Braddock area on March 12. We joined other volunteers as we offered carrots, potatoes, fresh apples, and canned goods. Each family received about 50 lbs of food that day. In fact, we served 394 families in 2 ½ hours! The need is great and many were thankful for someone taking the time to help. Thank you to Mike, Connie, and Tori Segeleon, Carol and Tom Willhite, Andrea Prohaska, Collen Heasley, SuEllen and Alyssa Dillon for braving the chilly morning and making a difference for those 394 families. It is amazing though, I think we were the ones blessed in the end by the kindness the Braddock families gave us. Saturday, April 30 Help refurbish a local home with Rebuilding Pittsburgh. R E S P I T E C A R E In this day and age of working and scattered families there should be someone you and your family can turn to for help when family is not available. You can turn to your church family. We can cook a meal, shop, drive or just visit for a few hours to give your family or caregiver a break. We re not a permanent or long term solution but we can help. We are a compassionate, dependable and responsible group and we will be sensitive to your needs. Let us help you recover and remain independent for as long as possible. We cannot take the place of your family, but we can put their minds at ease knowing that you are being assisted and are safe, independent and happy. For more information, or questions about how we can help please call Margie Smith at or Beckie Price at LOGOS An off-site LOGOS was held Tuesday, March 15th, at Chuck E Cheese in Bridgeville and we were happy to be able to do it as a fund-raiser and we are so excited to let you know that $ was donated to our own Bridgeville Area Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed themselves on the 15th and also helped out our Food Bank.
