In worship that morning at Cary United Methodist Church, we will pray a prayer from the Book of Worship that includes these words: Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. We give thanks to God for our mothers. Many of you are fortunate enough to have mothers who are still living. You continue to look to them as a source of love and wisdom. The bonds between mother and child change over the course of our lives and yet they endure. For some of you the roles have reversed and you now are caregivers and providers for your mothers. Some of us are sustained and comforted by memories of our mothers who have passed away. We look at photographs or videos or simply recall their faces and the sounds of their voices in our minds. We remember family celebrations where our mothers orchestrated gatherings that were filled with food, conversation and laughter. We remember oneon-one chats with mom that made a lasting impact on our lives. My own mother died in She was a deeply committed Christian who wanted her daughter and three sons to live as followers of Jesus. The two of us had a number of deep discussions about the Bible and spirituality. I am very grateful for those conversations. I am amazed when I observe some of the mothers of infants, children, teens and young adults from our Cary UMC family. Parenting requires so much love, strength, energy, patience and endurance. The role of mother seems to be continually expanding. I trust that we will always look for new ways to support and encourage the mothers in our midst. May God in Christ bless you richly, Pastor Michael Hickok 18 3

6 A week after Easter Sunday, I received a sandwich bag of cash with a letter inside. It was a letter from Sara Kelly s niece, Addie. CUMC Books n Bagels 2017 Book List, Books n Bagels Join us on Friday, June 2nd, 7-9 PM. At Panera in Fox River Grove, As we discuss this book. My Notorious Life By Kate Manning Here is what is said: Dear Pastor Dan, I am Sara's niece Addie. I tried to get you money for Appalachia (youth mission trip) and I did! I decided to make a lemonade stand, it took a while but I made it. I made $16 for you. Love, Addie How cute and sweet is that? It was another reminder why as an adult, I need to keep my eyes and ears open to what kids can teach me about faith. It was scripture come to life. It reminded me of a certain story in the Bible. In the gospel of John, chapter six, we are told a story about a large crowd that had followed Jesus up a mountain. Seeing that they were hungry, Jesus asks the disciples, where will we buy food to feed these people? Like many of us might do in a similar situation, Philip does the adult thing. He makes a spreadsheet and does some calculations. His answer was, More than a half year s salary worth of food wouldn t be enough for each person to have even a little bit. It was the correct answer but we know it wasn t the right answer because of how the story ends. It was then that a youth offers a very cute and uncalculated gesture. She/he offers up five barley loaves and two fish to feed five thousand people. Cute and adorable, but not even close! However, here is the surprise. This adorable gesture along with Jesus does feed everyone. Not only that, they end up with 12 baskets full of food! I wonder what God will do with Addie s gift of $16? Can t wait to find out! 7 The Open Door Cary United Methodist Church believes that our Open Door newsletter is a witnessing tool. With that in mind, anyone is welcome to submit an article for the Open Door. Our highest priority is the Christian content and to strive for accuracy. The newsletter can be an opportunity for us to tell stories of what God is doing, celebrate important developments as a community, teach about the Christian faith and practice spiritual formation. Guidelines have been written to help us use this resource most effectively to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The purpose of our guidelines is to provide clarity and consistency to Cary United Methodist Church s publications and digital media. These guidelines have been established for your use when writing on behalf of the church. Please note that even if all guidelines are met, the church office reserves the right to edit due to content or timeliness. Contact information should always include addresses and or phone numbers along with the ministry team supporting the project. Please submit articles and pictures by the 20th of each month. Articles submitted should be formatted in Word or Publisher. Both a page template and the Publication and Digital Media guidelines are found on the Cary UMC Website under newsletter. Thank you for your assistance, The Cary UMC Office Staff Vacation Bible School 2017 (VBS) Monday, June 19 - Friday, June Our Summer VBS is one of the major ways Cary UMC reaches out to the families in our community. Through VBS, children can experience the love of God in fun and experiential ways. They even get to participate in missions, helping other children in a different part of the world. Our own youth and adults also have an opportunity to witness to our community through their gifts. Would you like to be a part this great experience? We have plenty of opportunities for you to serve! Check out the "I Can Do This!" sign-up sheet the Nurture bulletin board. Let us know what you can do to support this very important ministry to our community! Registration has begun! Go to to register your kids! Registration closes, Sunday, June 7. 7
