2 A word from Pastor Mike.... You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. These words of Jesus, recorded in the 5th chapter of Matthew, remind us that Christians are called to be a positive influence in the world. We do this not for recognition, but to bring honor to God. One of our tasks, according to our Lord, is to bring light into a dark world. We can offer hope where so many are lacking it. We can offer peace where there is so much violence. No matter what challenges our planet faces, the good news is that God still loves this world and all who live Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5 here. Our loving Father will eventually restore creation to its original beauty. What can you and I do to live as light in this world? Think about the words we say. Each day provides the opportunity to speak words of comfort and encouragement. We live in a time when so many spoken and written words are negative and hateful. As I am writing this article, the Democratic National Convention is being held in Philadelphia. The Republican National Convention was held last week in Cleveland. In many of the speeches we heard harsh words about the candidates. Speakers from both parties have been guilty of vilifying those from the other political party. These stinging criticisms are so unnecessary. It should be possible for us to have civilized discussions about what it will take for our country to move forward. Our nation is at its best when we focus on what unites us rather than on what divides us. We may not be able to stop hurtful words from being said by others, but we can control our own speech. I trust that we may take every opportunity to speak words of gratitude for our many blessings from God. Let us look for times to say words of comfort and encouragement to others. Let us show our light in a dark world. May God in Christ bless you richly, Pastor Mike Remember that we will resume our normal worship schedule on August 7. Worship at 8:30 and 11:00 with Sunday School at 9:45 Mission u: Learning Together for the Transformation of the world Lois Voss and Glenda Arnold attended the Mission u conference at Camp Reynoldswood in Dixon, Illinois, on July The camp setting and outdoor scenery was beautiful and calming. Studies offered were: Climate Justice, Latin America: People and Faith; and Rev. Norvel Brown offered The Bible and Human Sexuality. On Saturday night Mission u celebrated their 70th birthday with prayer, coffee and cake. It was a fulfilling, rewarding, and spiritual weekend. By Glenda Arnold The winter session of Mission u will be offered on January 19-22, Reflections on Mission u 2016 This year United Methodist Women of the Northern Illinois Conference celebrated its 70 th year of hosting mission studies. We have met in hotels, at colleges, and this year at Reynoldswood Christian Camp and Retreat Center in Dixon, IL, nestled next to the beautiful Rock River. About 65 of us gathered for learning and fellowship. Our theme-created as Caretakers-is based in Genesis 1: We, as stewards of the earth, have the responsibility to care for all that God created. The Bible study was offered to all: The Bible and Human Sexuality, Claiming God s Good Gift, by M. Garlinda Burton. My other study was Climate Justice, A Call to Hope and Action, edited by Pat Watkins. My roommate Glenda Arnold took Latin America: People and Faith. We hope to provide opportunities for you to learn and dialogue about these important issues. Our responsibility is to learn how to live in right relationship with God, and each other, and with the earth itself. Climate injustice is the result of climate change. The church needs to more powerfully model how to address focusing on the environment and also asking hard questions regarding financial profit, a growing economy, and our understanding of efficiency. by Lois Voss 2 11

4 Tree of Life Mission Trip Team August Birthdays & Anniversaries On July 9th, after nine months of planning and fundraising, eighteen members of a mission team left Cary for the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota. We worked with an agency called the Tree of Life Relief Agency and our purpose was to work side by side with the Lakota people in one of the most impoverished areas in the U.S. We arrived in Mission on Sunday afternoon and had our first cultural experience with a traditional Pow Wow. We woke early each morning to begin our work day which consisted of a variety of jobs. Some team members worked in the co-op preparing and serving meals to those in need. Others went to the thrift store to sort and sell the many clothing and household items that were donated. Other team members went to construction and landscaping sights: a roof and bathroom were repaired, Sun Dance grounds were groomed, and many trees and rocks were hauled. After a hard day's work, we relaxed in the evenings with a cultural event that was designed to help us better understand the Lakota culture. We learned a bit of the language, some participated in the very spiritual sweat lodge. We learned some of the traditional games played during the cold winters, and learned the stories of the stars. Our evenings ended with a devotion that was prepared by our team members. It was an amazing experience and we made many new friends and bonds between old friends grew stronger. The 2016 South Dakota Mission Team would like to thank the entire congregation for their prayers and the many donations of gas cards, silent auction items and diapers. Thank you for supporting the many Culvers events, the chili cook off, spaghetti lunch, car washes, and purchasing Butter Braids. This trip would not have been possible without your support and your prayers!
