Cary Methodist Preschool Cary Methodist Preschool This year the preschool has classes for 2 s, 3 s, 4 s and 5 year olds. We are still taking students for this school year. For more information please check our website at: Autumn Greeters Thanks to all the families that served as Sunday greeters this Summer. It was a nice variety of new faces as well as seasoned families! Several members have suggested that we continue this signup procedure for the full church year. This would be easier to plan ahead for all families, as we often end up playing phone tag as our schedules continually shift about. We will give it a try, with an Autumn signup for September and October, posted in the hall across from church library. Early service greeters: 8:15 am Late service greeters: 10:45 am I encourage greeters to wear name tags. With Great Appreciation, Ruth Barrett 2 19

The answer is never. God makes it possible for us to continue the journey of more closely following Jesus our whole life long. Our maturation progresses by worshipping with other believers weekly, praying daily, taking every opportunity to read and study the Bible, and enjoying conversations about faith with other Christians. One of the important ways we strengthen and deepen our relationship with God is through Sunday School. Cary United Methodist Church offers classes each Sunday at 9:45 am for children, youth and adults. The arrival of September means that we are gearing up again for another year of learning together. It is always inspiring for me to see the children headed to their Sunday School classes in our church. With other boys and girls, they will gather with loving, committed teachers who are eager to nurture them in their Christian faith. I am reminded of my own days growing up in Sunday School as a child and teenager and some of the adults that greatly impacted my life. I trust that some of our own kids at Cary UMC are making memories today that will last a lifetime. Many of your participate in our adult classes on Sunday morning, but I am certain that some of you have considered taking part, but have not acted on it. I encourage to take the next step and join a class now. We have three adult classes that would welcome you with open arms. One of our classes is focused on a verse by verse study of the Bible. A second group is comprised of couples and they talk about ways to strengthen marriages and families. Our third class, discusses a current issue each week and how our Christian faith impacts our worldview. You can or call me or Pastor Dan Lee for more information on how to get involved in one of these classes. Pastor Dan will also be happy to assist you in registering your son or daughter for Sunday School. May God in Christ bless you richly, Pastor Michael Hickok 18 3

Dear Cary UMC, The week we spent in Tennessee was a great blessing and we want to thank you for your faithfulness in supporting us financially and in prayer. We also want to share with you the amazing things God has done through us and in us. We believe that you were all there with us as we represented Cary UMC and Christ to everyone we encountered. It was not an easy week but God taught us so much through our journey with the Appalachia Service Project, our team, our church and the people of Fentress County. Even before we left, God showed us grace through the people in our lives and community through their generosity of money and time. We were able to raise over $3,000 through our fundraisers enabling all 6 of us to be fully funded for our trip. We also were blessed to have people in our church, like Mike Vijuk, train us on safety and tools. The training really came in handy! We were also grateful for our United Methodist Church family in Columbia, Kentucky who let us stay overnight in their building and join their Sunday service on our drive down to Tennessee. 5 Elgin District and Northern Illinois Conference UMW Mark your calendars for our Annual Celebrations: For an entire week, Allardt Elementary School was the base of operation for four churches, including us, that made up a workforce of over 100! Each morning, after our devotionals and breakfast, each team gathered our lunches, supplies and tools and drove to our work site by 9 am. In order to keep the homeowner s name private, we called our homeowner s home Shake It Off after Taylor Swift s hit song. We were given the work of installing termination bars, underpinnings, wood trims and a storm door all of which none of us had ever done before. Sept. 16 District at Our Saviour s UMC, Schaumburg, 9am-12:30pm Climate Justice by Christina Krost, UMW Jurisdictional Leader on Be Just Be Green. Oct. 28 NIC at Grace UMC, Naperville, 9am-2:30pm Speaker: National President, Shannon, daughter of our own Conference president, Dottie Priddy. Cary United Methodist Women Books n Bagels: Friday, September 1, 7-9 pm, Panera Bread in Fox River Grove. Book: Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can t Stop Talking, by Susan Cain. Craft Group: Wednesday, 9 am 12 pm. Fellowship Hall, room A and B. Meets (Left) Underpinning left undone. (Middle) Reinstalling an incorrectly installed storm door. (Right) The previous week s team had done the roof so our team needed to finish the job by installing termination bars. These jobs were made even more difficult by the heat we faced every day. Most of the day, we worked in 120 degrees and to top it off, most of us were working on ladders! However, we knew God was empowering us to complete the tasks given to us; sometimes working on the roof and other times working in the dirt. We were determined to finish the jobs given to us! every week. Dorcas Circle: Wednesday, September 13, 12 2 pm. Fellowship Hall, room A and B & kitchen. Please bring your own lunch. Coffee and dessert will be provided. Open to all women. On October 11, Deb Kraemer will do a presentation on her mission trip to Zihuantanejo, Mexico. Evening Craft Group: Meets 3rd Thursday of the month from 7-9 pm. Fellowship Hall. (Left) We had to take very frequent water breaks because it was so hot. (Middle) Allison and Danny worked so hard to get the termination bars installed. (Right) Adrian sits in the dirt as he fixes the corner underpinnings that were installed incorrectly. 16 5

We have to admit that in the beginning, working together was a bit of a challenge. We had to learn each other s communication styles, personalities, habits and abilities. By the middle of the week; however, we became a true team. Outreach Team Our Rainbow Covenant ministry for September/ October is Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) (Green Band). JFON seeks to welcome the stranger by providing free, high quality, immigration legal services to underserved immigrant population in our conference, and education and advocacy opportunities for immigrants and non-immigrants alike. JFON seeks to educated volunteers and the larger community about the need for immigration reform, and cross-cultural opportunities through the involvement of volunteers at clinics, education events, and speaking engagements. (Left) Allison, Adrian and Danny take a short break before getting back to work. (Right) Deborah holds the ladder as John works on caulking the roof. Adrian applies caulk to seal wood trims. When we took water breaks, we had a chance to hang out with the Shake It Off family. We were so blessed to meet the grandfather of the family, Dave. He was a retired contractor who offered us his wisdom whenever we were clueless on the job. We also met Sam, an aspiring YouTuber, Alissa, the cutest outgoing little hugger, Damian, a very articulate and hungry little boy and their amazing mother Amanda. We were very blessed by their generosity and hospitality towards us. McHenry County CROP Hunger Walk Join us for the annual McHenry County CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 1 pm. There is a sign-up sheet on the Outreach Team bulletin board. Supporting the CROP walk will benefit local food pantries right here in Cary! The location of the walk will be at Crystal Lake Food Pantry. Ways you can participate are: Walking either the 1 or 4 mile walk; Donating to a walker from CUMC; or making a general donation on behalf of CUMC. If you are interested, please speak with Stacey Lee or signup on the bulletin board! Outreach Team is planning a trip to Asian Rural Institute in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan for September (Left) Deborah reads a story for Damian under the water tent. (Right) Dave, the homeowner, teaches Pastor Dan how to measure and cut a very awkward piece of wood trim. 6 15

Culver s Fundraiser Every morning, we packed enough lunch to share with the Shake it Off family. Wednesday, September 27 All Day The 2018 South Dakota Mission Team is sponsoring a Culvers Fundraiser on Wednesday, September 27. Enjoy a break from cooking and come out to support the mission team any time during the day or evening. Relax and enjoy a tasty meal or ice cream treat. Thank you for your support. After our work day ended at 4 pm, we drove back to the ASP center at Allardt Elementary School for a long awaited shower, dinner, evening session (music led by our very own Deborah Nelson and Adrian Coetzee), R&R and of course, lots and lots of ice cream. (Top Left) Deborah and Adrian leads us in worship. (Top Right) On Thursday night, the local hardware store hosted a BBQ to thank ASP at a local park. The Adrian, Danny and Allison decided to have fun in the water. (Left) At ASP, the ice cream comes in a kiddie pool. Cary United Methodist Church Craft Fair Now Accepting Crafters Applications The Cary United Methodist Church is preparing for a Craft Fair. The Fair will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 9 am 3 pm. We are currently accepting crafters applications for the show. All craft must be handmade. If you would like an application or if you have more questions, please call Vicki Oberlies at

Friday was the hardest day for us all. We realized that while we were rebuilding a home, God had built a relationship. We had to say good bye to our family. We said our final goodbyes and gave each other hugs and kisses. The last thing we saw as we backed out of their driveway was Alissa crying her eyes out. We held back our tears too. Ignite Youth Group In August, we had fun together by going to an escape room in Elgin. What is an escape room? It s place where you get locked in a room and the goal is escape it within one hour. We had to find clues and solve riddles around the room in order to find the last key which unlocked the exit door. We escaped with 10 minutes to spare. This proves that we are a great team! Come join us in the future! Ignite in September (6 th Sr. High) Even though we only knew them for a week, we felt like we were leaving our own family behind. Through this mission trip, God taught us that love is not just a feeling but a choice we make. Love doesn t just meet expectations; love blows expectations away. We must put this love into action! No matter who we are, God has given us all something to offer. God has given all of us a gift and God encourages us to use them to serve others. Love is putting others needs ahead of our own. We are inspired to make this a part of our everyday lives. Thank you again for your support! We could not have experience this without you. 8 Sunday 3 No Meeting! Labor Day Weekend!
