1 Heartbeat news FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF NEW HARTFORD NOVEMBER 2018 Time to Give Thanks Because of God s goodness to us, we give thanks! Because God has blessed us with the ultimate gift, Forgiveness from our sin and eternal life, we give thanks! In grateful response, acknowledging all we have belongs to God, we give thanks AND we return a tithe or an offering to God. As Christians, we believe the body of Christ can unite to worship, serve and share Jesus Christ with the world through the Church. It is fun and exciting to talk about missions and awesome worship and necessary pieces of these things are staff, buildings and utilities. Your church pledge helps all these things. As we turn back our clocks and plan our Thanksgiving feasts, let s turn in our annual pledges to God s church and anticipate the day we will be feasting at the Lord s heavenly banquet table. 3 The Knapsack ~Stanley Kunitz I am not good at grieving my losses and moving on. I carry them in a knapsack hanging heavy on my chest. Doesn t everyone see me stoop beneath the weight? Don t you ever get to put it down? Someone asks. No, I reply, it is with me always, more present on most days than God himself. Grief gets added every day, or so it seems. Oh, it s o.k., I say. It s just one more grief to tuck into my knapsack. I ve learned how to walk with heaviness around my neck. I know how to enter rooms, back straight, smile bright as though nothing was hanging there. But today I am tired. The weight of accumulated grief is more than I can carry. Where does one go to unpack grief? To take out each loss and hold it in your hand? To wonder where it goes and then put it in its place? I don t cry about my grief anymore, although there are always tears behind my eyes. The tears are stuck inside now like stones in a graveyard they have settled heavy into the landscape of my life. I ve heard that depression is the refusal to mourn. I don t know how to mourn in a way that helps. I don t know how. God, if you show me I would do it. If you would take me to a place where I could truly mourn, I would walk in I think. I would walk into that graveyard and lay myself down on the grave of each and every dead thing and let my tears fall into the earth. And then I would get up and walk out into my life. Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he took up our pain and bore our grief, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. God does not want us to carry our grief any longer than necessary. Jesus died on the cross that we would have peace not pain; rest not restlessness; joy not depression. But, as this writer so gently reminds us, we need to mourn in order to walk into our life. May you mourn fully so you may then walk into the life that Jesus had in mind when he died for you. Peace in Christ, Deacon Becky CARE AND SHARE MEAL MINISTRY In an ongoing effort to be a caring congregation, our meal ministry was organized to deliver a meal to those in our congregation who are ill or have a special need anything that might take us off our feet for a while. Our goal is to better care for our church family. For this to continue to be successful, more volunteers are needed to prepare part of a meal (main dish, salad/vegetable, or dessert) when the need arises. If many are involved, no one will be overburdened. We ask you to please participate with us in showing others that we truly care. It is a blessing for us all. Share your contact information with Paula Healy at or paula1323@aol.com to get started helping in this special way. Thank you!

6 Mission and Outreach Come join in the fun of packing Operation Christmas Child boxes on November 4 th, We will enjoy a luncheon and pack boxes after the Xalt service. A shoebox gift is an excellent resource for evangelism and discipleship. Children hear and receive a copy of the Gospel message in their own language and then are invited to trust in Jesus. They are then given a shoebox gift which may be the first gift they have ever received. These boxes go to over 104 countries (including the United States) as a caring, tangible expression of God s love. Lists of suggested items for the boxes for boys and girls can be picked up at the Mission and Outreach table in the gathering area. Items may be dropped off at the table or no later than the day of the Shoe Box Party. All ages are encouraged to participate! The Mission Team will be offering a Christmas giving project for seniors residing in nursing homes in our area. We want them to know that they are not forgotten at this blessed time of year. More information will be in the December newsletter and also available at the Mission and Outreach table. UMCOR ~ United Methodist Student Day is November 18 th, Monetary gifts to the United Methodist Student Day offer help to deserving United Methodist students continuing their education and their faith journeys as they strive to make a difference in the world and discern what God has called them to do.
