4 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist This is what the Lord says: "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." These harrowing prophetic words written over 3,000 years ago by the prophet Jeremiah which described both the destruction of Jerusalem and foretold the massacre of the Holy Innocents are just as true today as they ever were! Rachel continues to weep today through the voices and cries of immigrant mothers and fathers whose children who have been taken captive at our southern border over the past couple of months. I am very proud that our parish family will be taking a second collection this weekend for the non partisan Catholic Jesuit run Kino Border Institution who sole purpose is the humane treatment of immigrants on both sides of the border. Your financial support will speak volumes to those volunteers working on the ground helping to comfort and aid immigrants whose families are no more. There is a lot I could say about my disappointment to this offense against human dignity and basic human rights. I feel that I expressed myself clearly in last week s homily about that. What I want to share with you in this column is something I alluded to in my homily that probably disappoints me the most. Many of my conservative priest friends and lay catholics in the prolife movement, on social media, are vigorously defending this policy in the name of the rule of law. I will tell you why this greatly troubles me. Simply put, if the core of our religion that we espouse is not to rescue the most vulnerable from the most powerful, if not to care for our neighbor as ourself, and to welcome the stranger in our midst as if they were Christ himself, then why are we even doing all this? Is not our greatest calling as spiritual leaders to deliver the good news of the Gospel to the poor, orphans, widows, and outcasts as Christ did? Do not we believe and follow Jesus who was himself a dark skinned refugee? Here are some of the ridiculous arguments for supporting this policy that I have heard from them. You may or may not find yourself in their camp. Here also is how I respond. America First!! - I think this argument is nonsensical because at its very roots its unchristian. Every human being on this planet is loved by God equally. No country or nation comes first in God s eyes. Every human being, immigrant included, has a God given dignity that is just as sacred. I actually think that people who espouse that philosophy believe that Americans are more worthy of being helped or aided just because they are American and white. You help first people of your own kind and kin is the idea. Then what the heck is the parable of the good Samaritan good for if we believe that. Mind as well throw the idea of helping destitute people of other nations out the window because that s what the parable is all about I ve actually heard a corollary of the America First in my early years of doing mission work in a foreign country, Nicaragua, with high school and college students. People would say to me Father there are so many needs here in America, why not do a mission trip here first before you help those other people out. My response is that all people are worthy of God s love, not just those with American citizenship and passports. This argument for me is the worst one. Permanently separating mothers from their children through abortion is inhumane and barbaric therefore you should not be complaining about separating mothers and children at the border. Why I find this argument condescending and wrong is because it assumes that all people who are fighting for justice at the border also are proabortion. This is exactly why the argument is the worst one for me. It showcases the fact that many conservative priests and lay people are more pro Republican than they are pro Gospel. In other words, they are admitting to the fact that they support the policy of tearing kids away from their families at the border because at least it s not murder which is the worst that could happen to a kid. Are you kidding me!! So you ll do nothing then to fight this injustice because there are worse things in the world going on!? This inaction proves to me that they are more religious followers of the GOP than they are followers of Christ. That to me is scandalous. It is incongruent with a consistent pro life ethos. One final argument is if we do not separate children from their parents then we will have more illegal aliens coming into the country. This is as evil and argument as it is untrue. It is evil to tear apart families in order to deter them from emigrating to our country. In Catholic morality, the ends do not justify the means. In other words you can not do an evil to bring about a supposed good. Secondly, its untrue. You do not have to separate children from families in order to make sure our laws are followed. If immigrant families cross the border together they should be charged with a misdemeanor and then kept together until either their claim for asylum is heard and accepted or they are deported. That is common sense. It s also humanly decent. It s also in my eyes what it means to be an American and in my heart what it means to be a Christian. Fr. Matt

5 Sunday ~ June 24, 2018 Mrs. Rachael Czephya This is my favorite time of year VBS!!! I have been busy getting the Church Hall transformed into a deserted island where Jesus Rescues! I can t wait for our 45 campers to join us this Monday thru Friday for a week of FUN!! Camp runs from June 25 th - June 29 th 9 am- 12:15 pm. Drop off starts at 8:45 am and parents/guardians are welcome to join us for the End of Day Celebration at 11:50. Pick up is at 12:15 pm. I want to thank all my Junior crew leaders and Crew Leaders for taking their time and talent to come and help make this camp great for our young campers. With out you all this camp could not run. Thank you as well to my adult volunteers who are helping our youth grow in their faith. We are truly blessed to have all of you in our parish. Our next meeting is on July 24 th for an Ice Cream party 5:30-7:00 pm. If you plan to join us, please RSVP to Rczepyha@ssrcparish.com so we can have enough Ice Cream! Even if you have never joined us before all are welcome! This is open to anyone entering Grades 2 through 5 next school year. If you have not registered for next year you can do that at any time during the summer. You can drop your registration in the basket or bring it to the church office at any time. 6 Letters of Comfort and Encouragement If you feel frustrated and saddened by the recent detentions of two thousand children, separated from their parents, Central American asylum seekers, there is a small way we can help. Mother Teresa said, There are no great acts, only small acts done with great love. Please consider writing a short message of comfort and encouragement (or drawing a picture!) in Spanish or English to be sent along with our parish collection to the Kino Border Initiative, a Jesuit-Run organization on the border in Nogales, AZ/Sonora. A box will be available in the church foyer for collection of your letters to be forwarded to the Jesuit missionaries working at the Mexican border to assist these immigrant families.
