2 C H U R C H O F S T. P I U S X 2 R O C H E S T E R, M N Sacramental Life Youth From the Desk of Matt Maus In 2009, the Roman Missal changed, and the edition of our hymnals became obsolete. Being the hymnals were purchased in 2004 we Out of print didn't feel the need to replace them at that time. The hymns within are still well and good, but the order of Mass, The Responses and prayers have all changed and been out of practice for nearly a decade. The publisher also has stopped producing this edition of their hymnal for all these reasons. The time has come to update our hymnals in the pews and thanks to approval by the Finance Council and the Liturgy Commission we are moving forward to purchase a new resource. After a comprehensive study of options; Gather third has been selected by the liturgy commission to become our new hymnal. It contains a current translation of all the Mass prayers and responses so we can eliminate the use of pew cards. A good portion of music we already know with some beautiful new songs that will enhance our prayer and understanding of the Gospel. Of course, we will be doing a fundraiser to help offset this cost to the parish by asking for donations in memory of family and loved ones. More details on that next week! We re hitting the road this weekend for both the high school and middle school mission trips and One Call. Please keep us all in your prayers. Russ The Nativity of St. John the Baptist Perhaps when parents name their children, there may be the assumption that with the right name, they may begin to shape the destiny of their child. In today s gospel we have a similar picture. A family is gathered around discussing what to name their child. Zechariah and Elizabeth refuse to be swayed by those who say that tradition has the only say in what they name their child. Zechariah and Elizabeth are in touch with a deeper wisdom, an awareness of God s plan for their baby. His name shall be John A popular saying tells us: parents give their children two gifts: One is roots, the other is wings. Parents have expectations for their children and for children to go against those expectations sometimes means conflict. Perhaps grace comes when parents and children honor each other even when it means going against the expectations. This cannot be taken lightly and must always be handled with love. I pray daily for parents as my life pales in comparison. To be in touch with a deeper wisdom, such as Zechariah and Elizabeth, for your children no doubt takes much prayer and discipline. When our parents brought us forth to be baptized, one of the first questions asked from the Baptismal Rite is: What name do you give your child? Named by our parents, called by God, we once again gather around the Table of the Lord to be fed with divine wisdom and so continue to build the Domestic Church, the family. 7 N A T I V I T Y O F S T. J O H N T H E B A P T I S T Parish Life 25th Celebration! Did you know - Fr. Russ Scepaniak, our Pastor, will be celebrating 25 years of priesthood this summer? Our parish will have a celebration for him on Sunday, July 8th after the 10am Mass. Please come join us to honor Fr. Russ in Kennedy Hall for some of his favorites Hamburgers, potato chips, baked beans, potato salad, root beer and of course strawberry ice cream for dessert! My Health The injections I have been receiving from the OMC Pain Clinic are working. The pain is still evident but not as severe. Standing seems to be the most difficult. Bishop Quinn told me I can sit and celebrate Mass as long as I want! I am able to get around, though at a slower pace, in order to tend to various priest things that need attention. I will have an evaluation this week at the Mayo Spine Clinic so please pray that they can offer or find a solution to what ails me. Thank you for all the food!
