3 Second Sunday of Lent How is your Lent going so far? Usually it s right about now, in the second week of Lent, that I have my talk with myself about how Lent is about progress rather than perfectionism; it s about drawing close to God rather than adhering to a strict rule or sacrifice that I may chosen arbitrarily. And usually it s because by now I ve already dropped the ball on my particular practice or fast that year. If you re in the same place, don t despair! Luckily for us, Lent really IS about progress and drawing nearer to God. It s about noting the places where we allow God into our lives and the areas that need some more attention. And, it s forty long days which means when we fall asleep on the job, we can pick right back up again and still see spiritual fruit before Easter. Even the disciples had trouble staying awake (multiple times) throughout the Gospels! I have a book of meditations and readings that I use each year for Lent and one of the most powerful passages is right in the front on the second or third day. Kathleen Norris, a writer and poet, talks about an experience of teaching poetry to young children at a Catholic school. She shows them the wide range of emotions from the Psalms: everything from joy to anger, gratitude to sorrow, and invites them to channel some of their own strong emotions into their writing. She tells the story of one child: Once a little boy wrote a poem called The Monster Who Was Sorry. He began by admitting that he hates it when his father yells at him: his response in the poem is to throw his sister down the stairs, and then to wreck his room, and finally to wreck the whole town. The poem concludes: Then I sit in my messy house and say to myself, I shouldn t have done all that. Join us for STATIONS OF THE CROSS every Friday during Lent beginning at 7:00 PM I find this little boy s words so deeply profound and honest. How many of us have lashed out in anger or frustration and later regretted it? What messes might lurk in our own houses that need cleaning? Maybe it s not rage that hides in our depths, but jealousy, gluttony, or despair. Whatever it is that needs cleaning up, Lent is the time to do it. Recognizing the messes we ve made is the first step out so that God can come in and help us make more room. As Norris writes at the end of her passage, If the house is messy...why not clean it up, why not make it into a place where God might wish to dwell? -Angie

4 Sunday, March 17, 2019 Mrs. Rachael Czepyha Welcome back everyone from last week. Thank you to all those that joined us at 10:30 Mass and welcomed our Confirmation Class during their Rite of Commitment Mass. It was so wonderful to see all our Candidates with their Sponsors. Our First Communion families met last Monday for Banner night and it was very successful and fun. If you were not able to join us please see Mrs. Czepyha for the kit as these banners are used to hold your family pews and are due back to me at the first rehearsal. Confession that was scheduled for grades 3-10 on Monday March 18 th has been rescheduled to take place on Monday April 8 th. This is the start of our Lenten mission. An will be sent out to students with further details. Grades 6-10 your scheduled April meeting time of April 14 th has been moved to Monday April 8 th. You will attend the first night of our Lenten Mission and at the same time be required to go to confession. An will be sent to you with further details. Walk With Jesus on Sunday, April 7 th from 9:00am to 11:00am. This event will take place during our Class time. There will be NO classes this day and children should attend this event with your family. This is a family event and all are welcome to attend. Please join us as you experience Jesus last days on earth. You will travel to Jerusalem for Palm Sunday, sit down for the Last Supper, discover the sacrifice of Good Friday, and celebrate freedom from sins at the empty tomb. Our Youth Group will meet again on March 19 th. We will be making Pretzels in honor of lent and start to work on our knotted lap blankets. Hope you can join us! From the Desk of Mrs. Izzi This past week Mr. Brian Lamoureux, a graduate of St. Rose of Lima School, lead a discussion on Cyber-Bullying and Online Safety. This topic is of great importance for parents to be knowledgeable of as even young children are exposed to social media. Mr. Lamoureux is an attorney and also a professor at Providence College. Congratulations to our boys and girls basketball teams for making it to the play-offs. Last weekend was a busy one as our basketball teams played vigorously and our Honors Band students performed at URI. We are fortunate at St. Rose of Lima School to offer pupils the opportunity to participate in a variety of co-curricular activities. Pupils in Grade 8 have also begun rehearsing for Living Stations. Please save the date Friday, April 5 th at 7:00pm when our students will be reenacting the Stations. None of this would be possible without the generosity of all of our parishioners. We are beginning to plan the luncheon for the Eight Month Club so please refer to the inserted flyer for details. All members receive one complimentary luncheon ticket with their membership but additional meal tickets may be purchased. Nonmembers may also join us by purchasing a meal ticket too. Please return the flyer in a sealed envelope to the school/parish offices or collection basket. As many of our Athletic Coaches are parishioners, I want to thank them for their time. In gratitude for their willingness to coach, we are going to offer Coaches a complimentary ticket to our Athletic Banquet. This event will take place on Tuesday, June 18 th at 6:00pm at Valley Country Club so please save the date. The dinner will be a family-style Italian meal and all student athletes including instructional basketball will have an opportunity to attend if a ticket is purchased by them as well as a parent or guardian. As we celebrate St. Patrick s Day this weekend, Happy St. Patti s Day to everyone! This past week students at St. Rose enjoyed a wonderful Irish Step Dancing performance and faculty were treated to Irish Soda bread in the Faculty Lounge. Of course, pupils all participated in Stations of the Cross on Friday as we do weekly during Lent. We are fortunate that as a Catholic school, pupils have the opportunity to experience Stations at school. Father Matt graciously gives his time to our pupils by leading the school in Stations.
