JULY 2017 JULY WORSHIP SERVICES July 2 nd July 9 th July 16 th July 23 rd July 30 th On this 4 th of July weekend Sunday Pastor Lee s message is called: Being Neighborly. He will base his message on Luke 10: What Would You Give? is the sermon for this second Sunday in July. We will be challenged regarding what we would give to someone that asks for our resources. Acts 3:1-11 will be the Scripture passage. Acts 17:1-15 will be the biblical passage for this Sunday s message called Are You A Beroean? Read the Scripture verses in preparation for the message. Our wonderful Parish Associate, Rev. Hilda Pecoraro, will be leading us in worship this Sunday. Her message is entitled: Trust in the Lord. Pastor Lee will be preaching again this week. His sermon title is: Transformed By God. Romans 12:1-8 will be the inspiration for the message.

3 Pastor-Lee Thoughts It s July! The year is half over already. Can you believe it? This month we celebrate our country s independence. The 4 th of July Independence Day is a very special day to remember all the men and women that have given their life and/or limbs to give us the freedoms we have in this country. It s a fun day to celebrate with fireworks and our favorite foods. One of the most popular Patriotic songs of our country is America (My Country Tis of Thee). It was written in 1832 by the Rev. Samuel F. Smith. One of the stanzas is as follows: Our fathers God to Thee, Author of Liberty, To thee we sing, Long may our land be bright With Freedom s holy light, Protect us by thy might Great God, our King. The lyrics printed above can inspire us as well as give us a sense of thankfulness for what God has done in our country. Our country s Constitution and Bill of Rights give us the freedom to worship God. We are so blessed to have this freedom. There are many people throughout our world that are being persecuted for their belief in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Many people do not tolerate nor understand what Jesus means to these Christians. Let us all pray for all those that are persecuted that God may continue to give them strength in their relationship with him and that they may experience the freedom we have. So, let us, in this month of Independence thank God for the real freedom that we have not just the opportunity to worship God without government interference but the freedom that we have in our relationship with Christ. That is something we can really celebrate! In His Service, Pastor Lee MEN S FELLOWSHIP GROUP The Daytimers and Adult Sunday School Class will not be meeting over the summer. See you in September! 3 The Men s Fellowship group will not be meeting in July and August. Their next Saturday morning breakfast will be on September 2 at 8:00 a.m. Contact Marshall Hanson for more information.

4 You may be on vacation this summer, but your church isn t! Please be generous in your giving this summer, as you are all year long. WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY There will be no Bible Study during the month of August. The next meeting will be held on August 2 nd. We are going through Paul s 1 st Letter to the Corinthians. You can pick up a study guide at the Welcome Center. DEACONS, COMMISSIONS, AND SESSION MEETINGS The Deacons will meet on the 9 th of July during the Coffee Fellowship. They will meet in the Library. The Session of our church will meet on July 18 th at their regularly scheduled 7:00 p.m. meeting time. All are welcome to attend and give their input at this meeting. The Session meets in the Fireside Room. The Commissions will meet during the Coffee Fellowship on July 16. This will make it easier for all that are interested in participating in the Commissions to do so since the meetings will be immediately after our Sunday morning worship. The Commissions are: Plant Commission Stewardship & Finance and Building & Operations meets in the Pastor s Office Our church s HVAC system is slowly biting the dust. Rather than being reactive to the situation, the Session has chosen to be proactive and have it replaced before it breaks down altogether. That being said, funds that are needed for the general working of the church had to be taken from the general fund to pay for the replacement. If you can find ANY WAY to contribute toward paying for this expensive necessity, it would be most appreciated. Checks can be written to Henderson Presbyterian Church with HVAC noted on the check. If you have any ideas for fundraising, please talk to any of the session or deacons. Names of Church Officers are listed on page 6 in this issue of the Sonshine news. People Commission Membership & Evangelism, Mission, Personnel, and Nominating meets in the Library Program Commission Christian Education and Worship meets in the Sunday School Room So, get something to eat at the Coffee Fellowship and bring it with you to the Commission of your choice. 4

5 Thanks to everyone who has offered to provide for the coffee fellowship on Sunday mornings. Some people have never done the coffee fellowship before, or might not have done it in a while. Here are some Dos and Don ts of coffee fellowship service. DO 1. Bring food (finger foods are fine!) 2. Clean up after coffee hour. This includes: washing out coffee pot, dumping tea water, Cleaning up serving plates/utensils if tablecloths and dishcloths are soiled, take home, wash and bring back next week, vacuuming, taking trash from fellowship room and kitchen to the dumpster. DON'T 1. Bring plates, napkins and silverware. These are provided by the church and you do not have to bring your own. 2. Make coffee and tea. Coffee and hot water for tea will already be set up for you in the Fireside room. Thank you!! Don't forget the Food Bank as they continue to feed the ever-increasing number of hungry folks in our community. You are invited to make a generous financial contribution to this ongoing and vital church ministry. Make your check payable to HPC Food bank or put cash in an envelope marked "Food Bank". The Food Bank no longer needs plastic grocery bags. However, we could use food for pets and toiletries and towels for our homeless friends. DEACONS NOTES Happy 4th everyone! We will continue Congregational Coffee Fellowship in July and August following the church service on the first Sunday of the month. However, if there is no one signed up for coffee hour on the rest of the Sundays of the month, then there will only be coffee and water. Thank you to everyone who has participated so far this year. You are very much appreciated! 5

6 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Kid s Church is still happening over the summer! Kids are asked to sit with their families until the Children s message and afterwards move to the Sunday school room where they ll learn more about God in their lives. The Women s Bible Study continues through the summer. And don t forget Wednesday Evening Bible Study with Pastor Lee! This study will resume in August. We need you to sign up on the clipboards on the end of the hallway leading to the Sanctuary. There are multiple opportunities to be part of your church. Get involved in the life of the church in one of these ways. You can sign up to be a Lay Leader on Sunday morning it s not as hard as you might think! Check with Craig Sell, our Elder in charge of Worship, for more information. for Coffee Fellowship (sign up with several friends if you like) our Coffee Fellowship is a great time to introduce ourselves to someone we don t know or touch base with our friends over something to eat. Note: On the 1 st Sunday of each month there will be a Pot Luck Coffee Fellowship in which all are encouraged to bring some item to share. It will be a great time to taste the various food items from cookies, fruit, vegetables, candies, or other treats prepared or brought by our congregation. Coffee and punch will be provided. to be a Greeter to welcome those who come to worship with us a friendly smile is a great way to be met on a Sunday morning. 8 The Lord s Prayer By a 15-year-old student who wrote her version of the Lord s Prayer and got an A+ for this entry. The Lord's Prayer is not allowed in most Canadian and U.S. Public schools any more. A student in Toronto wrote the following NEW School Prayer: Now I sit me down in school Where praying is against the rule For this great nation under God Finds mention of Him very odd. If scripture now the class recites, It violates the Bill of Rights. And anytime my head I bow Becomes a Federal matter now. Our hair can be purple, orange or green, That's no offense; it's a freedom scene.. The law is specific, the law is precise. Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice. For praying in a public hall Might offend someone with no faith at all.. In silence alone we must meditate, God's name is prohibited by the State.. We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks, And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks... They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible. To quote the Good Book makes me liable. We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen, And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King. It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong, We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong.. We can get our condoms and birth controls, Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles... But the Ten Commandments are not allowed, No word of God must reach this crowd. It's scary here I must confess, When chaos reigns the school's a mess. So, Lord, this silent plea I make: Should I be shot; My soul please take! Amen 8
