1 The Beacon As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Gala.ans 6:10 The Newsle er of St. Paul s UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST McConnellsburg Trinity UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Fort Loudon SEPTEMBER 2015 Joint Parish Picnic Prayer and Praise Returns Sunday, September 13th at 11:00 a.m. Trinity and St. Paul s will join together at Loy and Linda Garber s home for our Parish Picnic. Please bring a covered dish, place se8ngs, chairs and swimsuit! Trinity Prayer and Praise begins September 16, at 6:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Room. It con.nues on the 1st., 3rd., and occasionally 5th. Wednesdays through the Fall. Ac.vi.es include singing of contemporary worship songs, a devo.on and prayer. It is an informal.me for sharing our joys and concerns. We had a wonderful turnout under the pavilion this summer! Let s build on it this Fall. Invite a friend from the community and join us. Wherever two or three are gathered in His glorious name, there will the Lord be. The Fort Loudon-McConnellsburg Charge of the United Church of Christ 228 North 2nd Street McConnellsburg, PA STAMP
2 Pastor s Message With Labor Day almost upon us, the summer season comes to an end. The days grow shorter, the temperatures change from hot and humid to cooler and more comfortable and the daily/weekly pace seems to quicken. The children head off to school and the busy day-to-day rou.ne becomes more hec.c. The Fall Season of the Church year begins on September 13 with our annual St. Paul s/trinity combined worship/picnic at the Garber home at 11:00 a.m. The next week, Sunday School for the children begins at St. Paul s and con.nues at Trinity. Adult educa.on classes con.nue as well in both congrega.ons. The Joyful Noise Band has started prac.cing for our contemporary services at St. Paul s (no, the Pastor will not be lead singer as Pastor Valeria was...to be kind, singing is not my forte). The Search Commi ees have been mee.ng and con.nue to complete the church profile for the new pastor search. It s an.cipated that the profiles will be sent to the Conference Office in early October. Both search commi ees have a difficult task to compile all the informa.on from members as to what we would like to see in new leadership as well as the budge.ng and commi ee work that is necessary during this interim.me. I am grateful to the commi ee members and all who responded to the ques.onnaire or spoke to the search commi ee members in regards to what is important for the future. Your input is important. Trinity Consistory Notes Trinity Consistory met on August 11, The minutes and Treasurer's reports were approved as presented. The Trustees reported that the stumps along the church are gone. Topsoil was provided by Carl Rotz at no cost. Shingles on the church were repaired by Jerry Armstrong. Pastor Tussing gave his report showing various events, ac.vi.es and mee.ngs that he a ended. He was on vaca.on from July 27-Aug. 7th. He and his wife helped at the Peach Fes.val. Under old business, we discussed who was playing the organ for some of the August Sundays. It was approved to get the new Ricoh copier for Trinity. We talked about the fact that our church is incorporated which alot of us weren't aware of un.l we purchased a new cer.ficate of deposit at Susquehanna Bank. We now have copies of the ar.cles of incorpora.on from the Franklin County courthouse. The paraments have been cleaned and are hanging covered in the kitchen. This cost was paid by the Sunday School. We have some new flower arrangements for fall made by Eileen Hornbaker. They look really nice. Cowans' Gap pavilion #1 has been reserved for Sunday, June 12, 2016 for our picnic next year. We have been made aware of a hole in the cemetery that a mower got stuck in. Wanda Woods called to let us know that her son, Tony, was mowing and the mower needed to be pulled out by a truck. We will need to take care of this situa.on. With no further business, the mee.ng was adjourned with the praying of our Lord's Prayer. Submied by Kathy Hess, Secretary Fall is an opportunity to reconnect with the worship and study ministries of the two congrega.ons. I invite you to worship with us on Sunday, invite a friend or neighbor and hold the ministries of the two congrega.ons in your prayers. Pastor Tussing
3 First Sunday Fellowship Meal St. Paul s will be star.ng up it s first Sunday of the month Fellowship Meal on Sunday, October 4, Following morning worship, we will spend.me together and enjoy our covered dishes, love and conversa.on with each other. This first Sunday, if you can, please bring a picture board of your Summer so we can all share what has been happening in our lives since our last fellowship meal together. St. Paul s Church Women United We are blessed to have a great group of women that come together on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. for fellowship and do the ministries of the church that God has entrusted us with. AOer taking a couple months off, it is.me to get started again on September 9th. Fall ac.vi.es and Christmas ac.vi.es will be on the calendar. uccmccbg.weebly.com St. Paul s Sunday School Sunday, September, 20th Youth and children s Sunday school will start back up! Teachers are ge8ng ready and some of the children will be moving UP to other classes. Teachers and helpers are always welcome and needed. This is without a doubt one of the most rewarding and cherished ministries in the life of a church! St. Paul s Adult Sunday School Our adult Sunday school class is the most loving, hospitable and nurturing group to spend.me with on Sunday morning. Arrive early and visit with coffee or tea and we (try) to call class together around 10:00. Stop in and join us! If you have not visited St. Paul s web page lately, check us out! Some updates, a lovely tribute to Janis Cutchall (original creator) good music to meditate with and more. Great job, thanks. Choir Prac.ce Begins Trinity Choir Prac.ce will be held on the 2nd. and 4th. Wednesdays of the month this Fall at 6:30 p.m. For the moment, Bernice Crouse will be the keyboardist for prac.ce. We would like to thank Heidi Myers for voluntarily playing for prac.ce for the last year. Heidi began a nes full-.me job this year and is taking a break. September prac.ce dates are the 9th. and the 23rd. We could use some addi.onal voices, and we hear them in the congrega.on every Sunday. Please come on the 9th. And give the choir a try. It s lots of fun to praise the Lord with your voice!

6 St. Paul s United Church of Christ Consistory Meeting August 18, 2015 The meeting was called to order by President, Loy Garber, Pastor Tussing offered prayer. Minutes from the previous meeting were not available. Treasurer s report was reviewed and approved, as presented, on a Seleen Shives, Carol Mellott motion. Complete Treasurer s report is attached to these minutes in the church office. Total Income for July 2015 $3, Total Expenses for July 2015 $4, Interest Earned for July, 2015 $ 2.25 NET LOSS $ Loy presented a bill for the parsonage taxes. Denise indicated that if we pay the taxes by September 30, 2015, we will receive a 2% discount. The amount will be reduced from $ to $ It was approved to pay the taxes, with the discount, on a Pam Carmack and Seleen Shives motion. The Worker s Comp. bill in the amount of $ was approved for payment on a Seleen Shives and Carol Mellott motion. Pastor Tussing presented his report. The report was accepted into the minutes. Donations are being accepted on behalf of Ruth Brubaker for medical bills. Consistory agreed, on a Seleen Shives and Kirk Cover motion to have Denise pay the bills and the donations will be deposited in the general fund. Any monies remaining will be given to Ruth Brubaker. The children will be holding a sleep over/ pizza party in the church basement on August 20 th. Jennifer Brubaker and Hillary Alexander will be staying over with them. Kirk Cover has estimated, to replace the oil tank in the basement, will cost $ , the current tank is 275 gallons. It was discussed and decided, on a Seleen Shives and Kirk Cover motion to replace the tank now, since it is over 50 years old, instead of waiting until it starts leaking. Kirk is also going to inspect the oil tank at the parsonage. The $ in the Memorial Fund was not distributed at this time. Loy is compiling the information received in the congregational questionnaires with the information on the church profile and is hoping to have it together by October. Consistory members went to the basement to look at an area for a couple of computers that will be made available to the Sunday school classes. It was decided to clean out the storage area and see how much room is available. The meeting was adjourned with praying the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted Pam Carmack
