Matthew 16:24 One of my favorite Christmas stories is The Gift of the Magi, by O. Henry. It is the story of a young couple, Jim and Della Young, and their gifts one Christmas. It was a difficult year, a time of recession, and Jim and Della did not have enough money to buy one another gifts. Jim sold his pocket watch to buy Della beautiful combs for her hair. Della sold her hair to buy Jim a platinum watch fob. Della ended up with combs and no hair to put them in, and Jim ended up with a fob and no watch to put it on. O Henry ends the story with these words: And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi. When we love someone, we are willing to sacrifice for them. When we love deeply, we are willing to sacrifice that which is very dear to us. Someone was asked if he would sacrifice his life for his children. His answer was, Yes Definitely. Have you heard the saying, If there is nothing worth dying for there is nothing to live for? Most of us would make great sacrifices for our children. Jesus told us that to be his followers, we must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him. He was saying, If you love me, you will sacrifice for me, even as I have been willing to sacrifice everything for you. Some fishermen were working mending their nets when Jesus called to them, and immediately they left their boats to follow Jesus. There was a woman who washed Jesus feet with her tears and dried them with her hair, and then soothed his feet with expensive perfumed oil. She sacrificed out of love for Jesus. Stephen was stoned to death for his faith. He sacrificed to follow Jesus. Next to these sacrifices, anything I have done seems small indeed. What are we willing to sacrifice? May God give us grace to make our sacrifices; to take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. Amen. Neighbors in Need Special Offering will be October 5 During Worship
2 PEACE MESSENGER HARTSBURG PUMPKIN FESTIVAL October 11-12, 2014 On Sunday, October 12, the community worship service will be held at 9 AM in Volunteer Park. Clairnel will be speaking and Rev. Don Snyder will be assisting. Peace UCC will host the Good Samaritan booth which will be located in the American Legion Hall and will also host a Food Booth, serving biscuits and gravy. Please contact Bailey Lenger ( ) to volunteer at the Good Samaritan booth. Contact Brenda Reeder ( ) if you would like to volunteer at the food booth. Please give of your time. Pancake Breakfast & Bake Sale November 9 from 8am-10am All proceeds benefit the You(th) summer mission trip. You(th) Calendar: You(th) Will Meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of Each Month at 7 pm From Your Council So, Clairnel gave a rousing sermon last week about forgiveness. That's something that we all struggle with, isn't it? Those great German genes that I have (and share with many of you!) often make me awfully stubborn. Pair that with my husband's Irish roots and sometimes we argue over the silliest stuff! However, my thoughts led me to how easy it is to let our anger over one thing billow over into other areas and keep us from seeing the big picture. Overall, I cherish everything about my husband and I am a better person because of him. Clairnel said I should forgive 70 times 7 times (and that was just Monday!) but I want to because I need him and my life is special because of him. It's that way at church sometimes too. Maybe we don't agree with someone or maybe one person is careless, and maybe momentary, thoughtlessness causes us pain. Maybe you weren't treated with the appreciation you rightfully deserved or we failed to recognize your talent. Maybe we missed helping you find the right fit or helping to create ways for you to serve and that left you feeling left out or underappreciated. And Clairnel's sermon left me wanting to ask for your forgiveness. If you are reading this, please know that our intentions are (mostly) good! Of course we are going to make mistakes. We are sometimes going to get mired down in the details of something and forget the big picture. Please know that we need you and we are special because of you! Sometimes, we mess up. Please forgive us. Please come talk to me (or Clairnel) about what you need. The big picture is that we strive to be a loving community of faith and we want you to be a valued participant! - Lee Ann Jestis, President 2
