1 A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?
2 From the Pastor I wanted to share a memory from my England trip with you. Walsingham is still in the middle of nowhere, and was even more so in 1061 when Our Lady appeared to a pious noblewoman, Richeldis, showing her the home at Nazareth and asking for a replica to be built. The shrine was a major pilgrimage center until Henry VIII ordered it to be looted and destroyed to pay for his own excesses. Pilgrims would enter Walsingham through the Slipper Chapel, where they would take off their shoes and walk barefoot the mile up the Shrine. In 1896, Charlotte Boyd bought the ruins of the Slipper Chapel and set about restoring it as a Catholic Shrine. In 1938, Alfred Hope Patton, an Anglican priest, began an Anglican Shrine near the site of the old Augustinian priory that served the medieval Shrine. If you re used to large pilgrimage centers like Lourdes or Fatima, the Shrine of Walsingham and its little village seem miniscule and even quaint. While the Anglican and Catholic Shrines are both beautiful, they also are a testament to the division between our two communions. The Slipper Chapel is tiny, having one altar and seating maybe 20 people maximum. The Anglican shrine is much larger, filled with altars and devotional spaces. Both places have various services all day long. And many pilgrims end up in the one pub in the village for a pint and some good conversation. There is really not much to do except pray and have fellowship. But, it is a place of peace and beauty. I brought with me your prayer intentions (and mine, too!) on a card and placed it on the altar of the Slipper Chapel as I celebrated Mass for you. I then carried them with me as I did the walk from the village to the chapel and deposited them with the prayers of so many other pilgrims to the shrine. I had some very serious prayer intentions of my own, and it was a blessing to have you with me in spirit while I was there. As I prayed in the sanctuaries, I was struck by something. Walsingham was a happening place until it was destroyed by greed and heresy. It took a laywoman with some money and an Anglican pastor with a vision to just get on with things and bring the place back to life. They revived something that was dead, because they knew that it could bring peace and light to others. Charlotte Boyd and Alfred Hope Patton didn t let fear stop them. They entrusted their initiative to the Blessed Mother, and gave their all for the glory of God. And we re all the better for it. Prince of Peace is an oasis of liturgical beauty, classic spirituality and intentional engagement in the Catholic Church. If you see it as a cafeteria to serve you what you want, you re probably going to be disappointed. But, if you see it as a school of the Lord s service to learn how and why to give of yourselves more generously, you will want to be part of this amazing place. Taylors is a lot bigger than Walsingham, and we have more people in church on a Sunday morning than the Slipper Chapel. My hope is that among us there will be lots of people like Boyd and Hope Patton, who will make their faith active by doing intensely beautiful things for Jesus and Mary. The Church needs YOU, your enthusiasm, your creativity and the joy that is so characteristic of you. Pope Francis The word Catechist means one that catechizes. It is a derivative of the word Catechesis which means to echo. A catechist then is one who echoes the Word of God and passes on the Catholic tradition and teachings. But, a catechist is much more than just a teacher who shares factual knowledge; a catechist is a minister of the church, one who is commissioned by the community to help form faith in others and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. A catechist is a mentor, witness, faith sharer, and model in the Christian way of life. We encourage you to pray about joining our team of volunteers. You will be trained and provided curriculum resources. Learn more about this opportunity for the school year by contacting: Maria Barontini at or maria.barontini@princeofpeacetaylors.org. Registration forms for Religious Education are available now. Registration fees are $40 until 1 August when they go up to $50. Forms are available in the church office and on the website. Please contact Maria Barontini at maria.barontini@princeofpeacetaylors.org with any questions. The Endow Women s Group is studying St. John Paul II s Letter to Women from now until 30 August. Women across all life stages (married, single, mothers, grandmothers) are invited together to unpack who we are uniquely created to be and discover the feminine genius.
