1 A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?
2 From our Interim Principal Dear Prince of Peace Community, As I reflect over the last seven months serving as the Interim Principal of Prince of Peace Catholic School (POPCS), the words faith, amazing, and rewarding come to mind. The education is strong and filled with academic excellence thanks to those who built and continue to build upon its faith-filled foundation. The entire school and parish staff are an amazing group of knowledgeable, cooperative, and energetic people. A few of my favorite moments across the past few months include watching the children attend their first day of school, the prayer-filled balloon release during All Saints Week, school Mass on Wednesdays, a snow day in December, the Christmas Concert, watching our sports teams play, high fives in the hallways, Battle of the Books, and witnessing the hard work of our PTO! Recently, we celebrated our 15th birthday and announced the reestablishment of the school s Annual Fund. Its purpose is simple to continue building upon the mission of Prince of Peace Catholic School as the apostolate of Prince of Peace Catholic Church collaborating with families to offer children an integrated Catholic formation IN FAITH, IN KNOWLEDGE, IN FRIENDSHIP, and FOR SERVICE. Contributions to the annual fund will be used for specific projects, scholarships, minor improvements, teacher needs, athletics, and outdoor facilities. During Catholic Schools Week, a special collection will be taken at all Masses for donations to the Annual Fund. We are deeply moved by and appreciative of the incredible generosity of our donors. If you have any questions, please contact me or our Annual Fund Chair, David Cervetti. Prince of Peace Catholic School continues to be a recognized leader in Catholic Education in the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina for the last fifteen years. We salute its leadership, faculty and staff for giving generously of their time, talent, and treasure to make our school all that it is today! 5 Happenings & Needs The Ladies Lunch Bunch will be on hiatus for January! Look forward to their next event in February. Questions? Call Dorothea Jones As Catholics, we are heirs to a remarkable heritage. The history of our Faith is so much more than a list of facts and dates. It is a fascinating story of adventure, rebellion, tragedy, and triumph. A story 2,000 years in the making, one word best describes Catholic history: Epic. Epic: A Journey through Church History is a captivating and fast-paced look at the story of the Catholic Church. Beginning with the lives of the apostles all the way up to the present day, Epic takes the immense history of the Church and simplifies it into twelve, color-coded time periods. In the course of twenty weeks, participants learn about the major people, places, and events that comprise the captivating story of Christianity. This study provides participants with an understanding of Church history that enables them to have a greater sense of meaning and identity as Catholics. To reserve your spot, go to and choose which session you would like to join, Thursday morning or Thursday evening. Morning sessions will be in Croghan Hall at 10a and evening sessions will be in the Middle School Building at 7p. The 20-week study will be broken up into four 5 -week studies across The winter study will cover the early Church. Timelines are $5 and will be available for purchase at the session and will be used for all four 5-week sessions. The Winter Session begins on Thursday, 11 January. For more information contact Angela Calabro. The parish office will be closed Monday,15 January in observance of Martin Luther King. Consider being an usher/greeter at one of our many masses! 6 Happenings & Needs The chalking of the door or blessing of the doorway on the Feast of the Epiphany is a popular pious custom throughout the Christian world. Family and friends gather at the main entrances to their homes and ask God s blessing on their dwellings, on all who live or visit there, and protection from all evil spirits. With chalk that has been blessed at Mass, an inscription is written on the lintel above the front door. It is made with chalk, a product of clay, to recall the human nature taken by God s eternal Word in the Mystery of the Incarnation. The inscription is made above the door so that all who enter and depart this year may enjoy God s blessing. The four digits designating the new year appear at the beginning and end of the line. Since Epiphany comes so near the beginning of the new year, the numbers represent an annual renewal of God s blessing. The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. These initials over the doorway serve to remind us of Who the Magi saw and adored in the manger, and they remind us to pay the Christ Child homage as well. The letters also abbreviate the Latin words Christmas Mansionem Benedicat. May Christ bless this house. The crosses represent Christ, whom we invoke, and the saintliness of the Magi who traveled from afar to adore the new born king. All make the sign of the cross. Leader: Peace be to this house and to all who dwell here in the name of the Lord. All: Blessed be God forever. Read: John 1:1-14 and then PRAY together the Our Father. Take the blessed chalk and write the following inscription above the main entrance door: 20+C+M+B+18 All: Lord God of Heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. May we be blessed with health, goodness of heart, gentleness and the keeping of your law. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our love for each other may go out to all. Father, bless all who gather here. Send your holy angel to defend us and fill with grace all who enter this door. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen. Logo items are a great evangelical tool! Prices: t- shirt ($8) and 24-oz Tervis tumbler ($15). Contact Angela Calabro to purchase!
7 Happenings & Needs During the month of January, we will have our annual Diaper Drive benefiting Birthright of Greenville. When a baby is born, every Birthright mother is given a "Baby Bundle" with newborn diapers, baby lotions, baby wash, and wipes. As you can imagine, they go through these items fairly quickly! Leave donations in the Narthex and CLEARLY MARK IT IS FOR BIRTHRIGHT. This is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to participate in a pro-life activity to mark the anniversary of Roe vs Wade and the annual March for Life in DC. Come learn about the Catholic faith! Classes meet Tuesday nights at 7p in Croghan Hall. For questions, contact Sean Chapman at rcia@princeofpeacetaylors.org. Parishioners! Please volunteer to make (or buy) dinner for our approx. 30 youth attending CYO. Meals are eaten on campus. Contact Stephanie & John Lasitter at s.j.lasitter@gmail.com with questions! If you had a candle on the St Joseph s altar for a loved one who died this year, you may now pick it up in the parish office. If you put a picture on the board of Remembrance, it will be put into a file to be hung next year or you may pick it up at the parish office.
