1 6yo Clara s drawing of her family at school included Fr. Smith who she said is leading her family to God! A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?

2 From our Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, After the so-called Enlightenment in 18th century Europe and the French Revolution, many Catholics wanted to find a way to reconcile their faith with the new ideas of progress that were current at the time. The following 19th century was a time of revolution and unrest, in which Catholics struggled to figure out how to live their faith in a world which was rapidly changing. That struggle resulted in some pretty amazing developments, such as a new commitment to eradicate slavery and racism, and the beginnings of a renewed social justice teaching in response to the excesses of the Industrial Revolution. But that struggle also led to some less than optimal developments in theology which led to ideas which threatened the very idea of revealed religion and the life of the Church. Pope Blessed Pius IX (r ) was elected precisely because the cardinals thought he was the man to overcome the widening chasm between the Catholic Church and the modern world. But shortly after his election, the man who was feted as the great liberal hope of the Church realized that there were numerous ideas floating around which were contrary to the teaching of Christ. In 1864, he issued an encyclical letter called Quanta cura and attached to it his famous Syllabus of Errors, which condemned 80 propositions which were becoming common in thought. In 1907, his successor St Pius X issued another document called Pascendi dominici gregis which grouped these ideas, and reiterated their condemnation, under the term modernism. He also called for the total eradication of modernist ideas from the clergy, seminaries and theology faculties. These holy popes realized that there were certain ideas that were becoming current among Catholics that would ultimately destroy the faith, and they reacted by condemning those ideas. What they did not do was provide a positive alternative to the issues raised by those propositions, and the Modernists were driven underground. In the middle of the 20th century, the nouvelle théologie attempted to revive some of these issues. Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange, a famous Dominican theologian, sounded the alarm that this was all just Modernism regurgitated. Truth be told, this new theology was not all just that, but there were current in it which ended up in the same dead ends as Modernism. After Vatican II, many seminaries and theology faculties almost overnight threw out the concerns of Pius IX and Pius X and embraced some form of Modernism or the nouvelle théologie. Ideas shape how we live, and those currents profoundly shaped, or misshaped in certain cases, the life of the Church and her clergy. I had a theology professor as an undergraduate who was fond of saying, If you want to be a good theologian, you need to read the Syllabus of Errors and have a glass of bourbon every day! His caution was that we need to take seriously the objections of the Piuses if we are not to denature the entire project of faith and the theology which seeks to understand it. Too many people have rolled their eyes and ignored these important documents. I would encourage you to find these documents on the internet and read them. Critics on Trial: An Introduction to the Catholic Modernist Crisis by Marvin O Connell remains an accessible and engaging history of the story of Modernism. Pius XII s encyclical Humani generis, from 1950, is an excellent approach to what is salvageable and what is not in these trends that culminated in the Modernist Crisis. If you want to understand the crisis in the Church today, you have to know the history and theology behind how we got here! 1 Church 2 Christ the King Adoration Chapel 3 PAC (Parish Activity Center) & PAC Classroom 4 Guadalupe Hall 5 School & School Offices (Lourdes Hall) 6 & 7 Parish House, under the protection of Our Lady of Fatima 8 KofC Building 9 Pope Francis House 10 Walsingham Hall Parking Lots 11, 12, 13 and 14 Brushy Creek Road

8 Happenings & Needs 21 September 2018 marks the 15th anniversary of the dedication of our new church. Church Trivia Symbols & Meanings in our Church The bronze sheaves of wheat on the main entrance doors represent that the Holy Eucharist is the center of our lives as Catholics. The wrought steel shepherd crook on each Narthex door reminds us that Christ is the Good Shepherd and that we are His flock. The wrought steel lilies on the Chapel doors represent the purity and virtues of Mary. Crucifix (hanging in the back of the church under the balcony) Flame above the Head of Christ Fire of the arresting soldiers torches, martyrdom. Skull Golgotha, the place of the skull, where Jesus was crucified. Tradition holds that the cross was set above the bones and skull of Adam. Through Adam, the first man, came sin and death. Christ, the New Adam is life and forgiveness. Olive Branch Universal symbol of peace; Prince of Peace logo. Lily Purity, immortality and loyalty: often used as a symbol of Mary Rose Canes: martyrdom and a reminder of the Crown of Thorns. One branch is free of thorns, another Mary symbol, the thornless rose. Dogwood Blossom South Carolina tree-petals are reminiscent of the shape of a cross. Owl A creature who waits alone in the night-as Christ did in Gethsemane. Palm Branch Victory over death; native tree of South Carolina. Congratulations to the following children who received the Sacrament of Baptism!
