2 From our Pastor June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, because the feast takes place in June, on the Friday after the Sunday in the Octave of Corpus Christi (or in the new calendar, the Friday after Corpus Christi). Some of our Protestant friends find it very odd that we celebrate a feast in honor of a body part of Jesus, but the heart in biblical symbolism is an incarnation of the entire being of a person. The devotion to the Heart of Jesus has echoes in the patristic and medieval eras, with some beautiful hymns being written during that time period. In a sense, the Heart of Jesus is associated in a particular way with the divine mercy and compassion, which is one of the reasons why the Divine Mercy devotion was initially viewed with some skepticism as a duplication. St John Eudes ( ) was the chief propagator in modern times of the devotion, and the Jesuit order in particular was noted for it. The feast was first celebrated in When Our Lord revealed His Sacred Heart to St Margaret Mary Alacoque from , it spread like wildfire all over Europe and the New World. But it wasn t until 1856 that Blessed Pius IX extended the Feast to the Universal Church. In 1928, Pius XI attached an Octave to it, and the year following changed the prayers for the Mass, but that octave only survived until It is still common for a what is called a Votive Mass, a special Mass of devotion, to be celebrated in the honor of the Sacred Heart, on the First Friday of every month. St John Paul II in 2002 declared the day as a special occasion to pray for the sanctification of priests. History shows that seeds of devotion from antiquity often, at a certain point in time, grow into a very important element in the spiritual life of the Church. Private, popular, local devotions fulfill a need in the human heart to dwell on one particular aspect of the mystery of the divine. And the Church, in her wisdom, discerns and tests the message to ensure its conformity with public divine revelation. She celebrates it liturgically on a local level, and then a universal level, and the popes even write encyclicals about them to instruct the universal Church in its message. Sometimes the influence of these feasts and devotions waxes and wanes, but never entirely drops out of the consciousness of Catholic life and culture. The Litany of the Sacred Heart is a particularly beautiful prayer to say in this month of June. Maybe you can add it to your personal prayer time in front of an image of the Sacred Heart. In my seminary, it used to be the tradition that all the men studying for the priesthood would gather every night in front of the statue of the Sacred Heart in the courtyard and chant the Litany every night in June and then process to the chapel for Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. God hears our prayers: from our heart to His, is a very short distance indeed!

4 Happenings & Needs Pentecost (from the greek word Pentecoste meaning 50th day ) is one of the most prominent feasts days in the Christian calendar, It is often referred to as the birthday of the Church. It marks the day, nearly 2000 years ago, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, who had been living in fear for 50 days following the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. Emboldened by the Holy Spirit, the apostles set forth to tell all people in Jerusalem of the resurrection. As they spoke in tongues given to them by the Holy Spirit, all nationalities present could understand them in their own mother tongue. A marriage can never be too good! Grade school program runs Monday-Friday, 9a- 2:30p (students bring bag lunches from home) Junior and Senior High School program runs from Sunday to Thursday, 7-9p. Prince of Peace Church League Coaches will be offering free basketball clinics (open to all levels) for any child interested in Church league basketball in the Fall or anyone who just wants to be introduced to basketball. The clinics will start Tuesday, 18 July, in the PAC from p for rising K-5-3rd graders and on Thursday, 20 July, p for rising 4th-8th graders. The clinics will continue on Tuesdays, 1, 8, & 15 august and Thursdays, 27 July, 3 & 10 August. Practice will begin Monday, 31 July, from 7-9p.
