2 From our Pastor Growing up in Germany, Martin Hellriegel ( ) learned from his parish priest as an altar boy to find in the Mass the source of his spiritual life. He imbibed in the great monasteries of Europe a great love for the solemn celebration of the Roman liturgy. When he came to the United States as a young missionary priest, he was assigned to a convent of nuns whose community life revolved around sentimental private devotions and quickly said Low Masses. He set about introducing them to the Divine Office and Sung Mass, and their life was revolutionized. When he was appointed pastor of a German parish in St Louis, MO, Holy Cross, other priests thought that the enthusiastic young priest was not going to be able to do in a parish what he was able to do in the convent. Hellriegel started with the children. He knew that, for the children to really understand the Mass, they had to really participate in it. And so he had them involved in processions, choirs, and the Divine Office. He taught Latin and Gregorian chant in the school, so that the children would be able to understand their Catholic heritage, which had already been lost to so many. But he also insisted on their learning German and English music as well. The hymn, To Jesus Christ, our Sovereign King, which we sing here, was composed by him as a reminder to his German parishioners in World War II that Our Lord was the true Führer of souls, and not Hitler! This young priest was considered dangerously avant-garde in the 1940s and 50s when he set about his work; twenty years later, he was considered retrograde. But, as he said, I haven t changed at all! His earnest desire was to see the Church s public worship come alive in the hearts of his people. He mentored another priest, Father Frank Phillips, who is the pastor of St John Cantius in Chicago. Fr Phillips was assigned to a broken down Polish church with hardly any parishioners and a weekly offertory of about $25! Last year, the church was voted the most beautiful church in the country, and a religious community of men has been founded which has now taken over several other parishes that keep the vision of Hellriegel alive. I was blessed to spend some time with Fr Phillips at Cantius, who mentored me on how to bring forth from the treasures of the Church things both old and new. As a young man, I sang there orchestral Masses from the Viennese tradition, like Mozart, for the first time, and saw at close range how ethnic traditions could be extended to be meaningful for others. I learned to appreciate blessings and processions and many hours of confession there. 4 Happenings & Needs World Day of Prayer for Vocations will be observed on Sunday, 7 May, also known as "Good Shepherd Sunday." This year marks the 54th anniversary. The purpose of this day is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). 5 Happenings & Needs art camp is available either June or June for students entering K5-8th grade with Marilyn Alber. Classes are 2 hours daily (Monday-Friday) and include demonstrations along with individual instruction on different media, including pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor and acrylics. Fees are $160 for a week. Materials are provided. Classes will be on campus in the PAC-Art Room. Deadline for registration is Monday, 29 May. Forms are available at the school office. Questions? Prince of Peace Church League Coaches will be offering free basketball clinics (open to all levels) for any child interested in Church league basketball in the Fall or anyone who just wants to be introduced to basketball. The clinics will start Tuesday, 18 July, in the PAC from p for rising K-5-3rd graders and on Thursday, 20 July, p for rising 4th-8th graders. The clinics will continue on Tuesdays, 1, 8, & 15 august and Thursdays, 27 July, 3 & 10 August. Practice will begin Monday, 31 July from 7-9p. Games will start after Labor Day, 11 Sept and run through mid-november.
