Alan Rudnick When I was a child, before the dawn of Wikipedia.com, I would spend hours looking through my family s Encyclopaedia Britannica. I read about the elephants, John F. Kennedy, the Civil War, how radio works, and just about everything under the sun. It was a valuable resource for a kid who did research projects the night before they were due. Last year, Encyclopaedia Britannica made a bold but necessary move to end publishing their print encyclopedias. After more than 200 years as the standard in reference material, the company would no longer print encyclopedias. This was truly a groundbreaking moment. The company could no longer overlook the growing popularity of new technologies. People no longer looked to books, but other forms of media for information. In 1990, the company sold 100,000 sets of the bound volumes at $1,000. Six years later, only 3,002 sets were sold. As more and more people turn to the internet for information, Encyclopaedia Britannica stayed on course. They J U N E realized that what they give to people is not books, but information. Britannica realized that their mission and their medium were different. Company president Jorge Cauz said, Our people have always kept the mission separate from the medium. The president of Britannica has navigated his company because of a deeply held sense of mission. Now, his company provides an encyclopedia online but also curriculum for K-12 schools through the internet, DVDs, and other forms of media. The key to their success was simple: focus on learning, not the product. The company continues to grow in different ways as their vision unfolds. Churches are no different. Styles and medium change, but the mission stays the same: Making disciples of Jesus Christ. The medium is not the mission. Music styles change, preaching styles change, languages change, church building styles change, and the medium of the Gospel changes. The mission of Jesus never changes, just the vision grows. In our church, we are at a groundbreaking movement. On June 2, we will hold our Vision Celebration Lunch after continued on next page

P A G E 2 church. The Vision Community will roll out our vision statement and the congregation will be able to provide input of how our new vision will fit into our mission. We will still have worship, Bible study, prayer, music, service, and most importantly Jesus Christ. However, how we deliver and reach people for Him may grow into something different. Churches die because they focus on producing the same product, and not on providing new ways to learn about Jesus. Our vision process is similar to what Britannica went through. We cannot focus on our product, but instead we must focus on how we deliver the information of the Gospel. Our June 2 Vision Celebration is about how we will begin to focus on how we will accomplish our continued mission but in new and growing ways. The mission of the church has not changed, just the vision. Vision is about the future. Vision is about how we will accomplish the mission in the future. The beautiful thing is that we have already begun that. Through our Summer Lunch Program, kitchen ministry, new youth ministry model, small groups, and new mission outreaches, we have already started to renew our vision without compromising our mission. I pray you will join with me in this grand adventure on June 2. Grace and Love, Rev. Alan Rudnick CONGREGATIONAL VISION LUNCH June 2, 2013 Join us for lunch after church as we celebrate the completion of our Vision Statement. 3 P A G E 3 BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION The Board of Christian Education has been busy with help from everyone in our Church! We started a joint effort last summer with the United Methodist Church for our Vacation Bible School. Grace Paster from the Methodist Church has taken the lead this year with help from Joy Hanchett. Look for information in the Messenger and Messenger Lite. Our Children's Worship has been going extremely well. We will not be having Children's Worship during the summer. When church services change to 9:00 a.m. the middle of June, be on the lookout for activity bags for the young children to complete during summer services. If you would like to assist and teach just one Sunday please let Joy or the Board of Christian Education know and we can put you on the schedule for the Fall. Check out the library! Mary Morelock has been working very hard to update the library. If you would like to check out a book, stop by and see Mary. We are looking for new members of the Board of Christian Education. If you are interested in serving in the church and education is where the Lord is leading you, please see me or the Pastor for more information. Hello Friends, FIRST BAPTIST YOUTH NEWS The Tuesday Night Bible Studies have been amazing. We meet at Christ Episcopal Church from 6-8 p.m. and include a delicious dinner (things like meatball subs, hamburgers, chicken quesadillas, lasagna etc., with salad, drinks and different baked desserts) a game (like sardines, ninja tournaments, quiz competitions etc.) worship (which I lead every week) and a Bible study, all of which have been very good and the youth have been responding to. All 7th-12th graders are welcome. Ballston Spa's roller skating, go karting, mini golfing & laser tagging Ignite Extravaganza was a blast. I'm so glad we got to do that together. Blessings, Dottie Sellers, Chair, Christian Education MIGRANT MINISTRY HEALTH CARE KITS The Missions Committee is collecting Health Care Kits for Migrant Ministry North. This ministry ministers to and with approximately 300 migrant workers during the months of August through October. It would be great if a family or a Sunday school group could fill ONE COMPLETE reusable bag and place all of them in the church office by June 30. Items: shaving cream, razors, deodorant, wash cloths, hand towels, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, work socks (white or black), heavy combs or picks, pens, pencils, writing tablets, books and or coloring books. We have a few more Ignite events coming up so stay tuned and if you have any questions you can call me at (518) or me at sstewart1389@yahoo.com. Please pray that God would continue to bless us. Stephen Stewart (Youth Minister)

P A G E 4 SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM We are only a few weeks away from the start of this year s Summer Lunch Program. We are busily finalizing plans. Again we will be assembling the lunches ourselves to ensure freshness, and we will be serving lunches five days a week in three locations. We purchased a meat slicer to save on the cold cuts for sandwiches. We still need help in several areas. First of all, please pray for the success of the program. We have an opportunity to impact the lives of many children and their families. We want the love of Christ to be mirrored in our concern for them. We also need many volunteers to make and deliver lunches. There is a spread sheet that you can sign up on in the entrance of the church. Please consider how you would like to help. If you can volunteer just one or two mornings this summer it will make a huge difference. Lastly, we are in the process of collecting the necessary funds for the program. We have sent fundraising letters to many businesses and organizations in the village, and we have been awarded small grants from Stewart s Shops and from Walmart. Please consider how you would like to help! Pat Rogers and Karen Jones The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Luke 10:2 ADOPT A PLATOON We have a new U.S. Army Platoon! Based out of Texas and in Kuwait until October the platoon consists of 15 men and 5 women. They have no running water, are living in tents, with a chow hall half a mile walk away. Let us begin to support our new Platoon with snacks, card games, and personal hygiene items. Anything we provide to make their lives more comfortable will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued support of our troops stationed so far away from home. Contact Vallee Albert for more information: SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER APPRECIATION & FATHER S DAY BREAKFAST Sunday, June 16, 9:00 10:15 a.m. This will be a potluck breakfast. Please sign up! BUDGET & FINANCE COMITTEE As Committee and Board reports were not read at the semi-annual meeting, I will try to re-cap some of the information in my report. If you would like a copy of my semi-annual report, please let me know. Through April, income and expenses were right where we had projected; Income at $88,546 and expenses at $87,585. At present there is $28,769 in the check book in addition to amounts of $5,798 for the Summer Lunch Program, $875 for the additional gifts to Christ s Cupboard, and $5,000 from a grant received to renovate Christ s Cupboard. Our Committee met with the BSNB Trust Department for an overview of our Endowment Fund. We had a 6.7% return on our account in From January 2013 through April we saw an additional increase in the fund s value of $65,000. Due to the substantial increase in value of the stock portion of our portfolio, the committee will make a revision to our Investment Guidelines to increase the percentage of equities from 55% to 60% not necessarily wanting to increase the purchase of stocks, but allowing the Trust Department to hold what we own and stay within our guideline percentage. As individual expenditures are not being vouchered within a reasonable amount of time for bookkeeping purposes, we are asking all those paying for approved purchases to submit their vouchers to the respective Board Chair for approval and then to our Treasurer within a month of the expenditure. As our Committee keeps close track of line-item expenses by the month, this will allow us to have a proper accounting at any given time. Thanks for your cooperation and keep up the good work.

P A G E 5 MISSIONS COMMITTEE Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During the month of June, as part of our American Baptist church heritage, our congregation will be receiving the collection for ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING. This is our annual summer act of worship in sharing our finances; we bring JOY to us, JOY to others and JOY to God. Generous giving, practiced as a regular spiritual discipline, teaches us joy. We learn to see ourselves as vital parts of the body of Christ in sharing what God has blessed us with. For 64 years, recipients of One Great Hour of Sharing assistance relief and support have known comfort and joy through your sharing to families displaced by natural disasters or political unrest, providing food, shelter and the comfort of a safe place to begin rebuilding their lives. God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7. Can you imagine God s joy when we share? As you make your offering to One Great Hour of Sharing this year, remember the many ways your gift can bring joy, to you as God s loved one, to all of God s other children, and especially to the Holy One. Offering envelopes are provided in this month s Messenger as well as in the pews. May your worship be joyful, may your sharing be abundant, and may God be made glad by your cheerful generosity. MISSION EVENTS: HERE TO SERVE City Mission of Schenectady Be on the lookout for a sign-up in our gathering area (right when you come in the entryway in the back by the coffee) to help serve a meal at City Mission of Schenectady on June 22 nd. We will wear our Here to Serve T-shirts and go as a team to serve a meal and encourage others. If you can t go, you can sign up to provide FBC s signature cupcakes to the clients and staff at City Mission. It s always a great event! Gateway House of Peace This is a 2-bedroom hospice facility opening up on Rowland Street in Ballston Spa. This is a 100% volunteer, donor driven and community owned hospice residence. They are having a garage sale on Garage Sale weekend in the Village of Ballston Spa and are looking for donations to raise funds. Please contact Patty Veitch or Anna Stanko at ambassadors@gatewayhouseofpeace.org to help as a volunteer. They are looking for volunteers for many things and also have training classes if you are interested in hospice work Saturday Kids Backstretch Program at Pine Grove Camp (Saturdays) This is a partnership between First Presbyterian Church (FPC) of Ballston Spa and the Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA). Each summer during the racing season, many backstretch workers relocate with their families to Saratoga. RTCA in partnership with local churches and individuals, seeks to minister in the Name of Christ to these families in meaningful ways by helping to support a Saturday program at the Pine Grove Camp. We have been contacted by FPC who have asked us, as a church body, to get together a team of volunteers for one or more Saturdays. Please see Jude Pierre or contact him at jude pierre@gmail.com for more information. Christ Cupboard Food Pantry This is an ongoing ministry at FBC. We still need volunteers to pick up food orders, to stock the pantry on a regular basis. A big THANK YOU to the Ballston Spa Post Office workers who collected all of the food in the recent Village food drive, and a BIG, BIG thank you to the Christ Cupboard helpers (you know who you are!!) who went to the post office on a rainy day, filled vehicles, brought all the food items back to church and sorted and stocked. Many hands make light work! And fun in the process!! For the Mission Committee, Pat Stack

P A G E 6 GUATEMALA UPDATE - GET ON BOARD! Praise God for the response of the people of First Baptist to the children of Cruz Blanca Guatemala! Following the presentation by Ashley Hentrichs last month, regional representative for Vision Trust, five families chose to sponsor a child in the village. We rejoice in the knowledge that these children and their families will be supplemented in their physical and spiritual needs through this outreach. If you would like to join this "Gospel Train," contact Ashley at AshleyH@visiontrust.org and connect with a child. One of the great benefits of this is the correspondences you get to both write and receive from your sponsored child. They are such a blessing! You might also consider joining the work teams scheduled to go to Guatemala in February of One week will focus on physical labor upgrading an educational building (Feb. 10 to 16) and then next will focus on a children s ministry in a VBS style outreach (Feb. 17 to 23). If you are feeling the spirit to join us, trust God to find a way. Contact Mark Hopper at hopshop123@aol.com for more details. ALLEN ORGAN Dear members and friends of FBC, As you undoubtedly recall, last year as we approached Summer 2012, there was available on E-bay an Allen organ to replace the aging Rodgers organ that has been used for well over forty years. We at FBC gathered our monies together, using an available organ fund, as well as make a request to the member and friends to assist in underwriting the expenses needed for the purchase. As it turned out, the Lord had other plans at the time and the sale fell through, much to our disappointment. Recently I talked with Rev. Ramon Mendez, pastor of the New Life Evangelical Church in Reading, PA. They are seeking the Lord's will on selling their Allen organ, model MDS-655-DK, the exact same model we were seeking last year, only two years older. Speaking with authority regarding the quality of this instrument and having over ten years of experience on this same model, this is indeed a wonderful opportunity we have once again to update the present organ. We are seeking to raise $25,000 plus shipping and installation charges, and are praying this is what the Lord would have for First Baptist Church. Pastor Alan and I have entered into conversations with Rev. Mendez, seeking to finalize a sale, pending on our own visitation of the site in Reading, PA, and the raising of funds. I am requesting your prayers as well as asking for you to either recommit your pledge from last year or to assist in a new pledge this year. The need to replace the existing Rodgers organ becomes greater the longer we continue to use it. I have indicated to Pastor Alan that I will manage the contributions in pledge form. Please either me at DDDMusik@nycap.rr.com, call , or give me a paper with your name and the amount pledged. Contingent on raising the necessary monies, New Life EC has agreed to the sale. I am asking for your contributions to be made immediately to the Organ Fund at the church. You can make the check out to First Baptist Church with Organ Fund in the memo line. I am anticipating we will be able to raise the funds prior to my journey to Reading, PA, on June 6. As the Lord leads, please consider your direct involvement in this exciting organ project. Darryl Drew, Music Director

P A G E 8 AMERICAN BAPTIST CHURCHES NEW YORK STATE WHAT IS GOD DOING AMONG US? Fowler Baptist Church ministering at Mission of Hope, Haiti From Brenda Maxson of Fowler Baptist Church, Gouverneur: We were a group of 10 people, with our main purpose in going to p r o v i d e Mission of Hope with our construction efforts. We also had 2 of our members who were nurses. Throughout the week we spent our time on [various] projects: the men in our group working on the roof of the church as well as a variety of small construction projects and the ladies working on painting. [Two women] did manage a few days as nurses going to the MOH campus to help out there sorting out medical supplies and medicines. By the time we were to leave, the building we were working on had 5 coats of paint on the thirsty concrete and the roof on the church in Leveque was complete so they could begin thinking about holding church services soon there. The variety of small construction projects around the Bercey campus were complete. It is our prayer that the experiences we shared there will continue. First Baptist Church, Penn Yan gathers supplies for Backpack Program From First Baptist Church, Penn Yan Newsletter: YOU ARE GENEROUS! 20 boxes of Hot Chocolate packets came in for the Backpack Program in March. A cool, rainy evening soon turned into a h e a r t - w a r m i n g event as young people from Colgate, friends from Park Methodist and our own church family danced their hearts out. One Colgate student was heard saying as he was leaving, That was the coolest thing I ve ever done! When are you going to do this again? The Revs heading to Rwanda May 24 - June 8 From Rev. James Harriff, ABC/NYS Treasurer: Suzi and Jim Harriff (The Revs) are heading back to Rwanda, flying from Dulles on Friday May 24th and returning Saturday, June 8th.
