Alan Rudnick If you are reading this then you have found a few minutes to draw your attention away from one thing and give your attention to this article (hopefully, not during the sermon). You have committed your time to reading. How much do you commit your time to God through prayer? Time is a precious commodity. Billions of words are used in time management books to improve how we use time. Consultants are brought in to help companies improve time spent on projects to maximize productivity. We use calendars, apps on smartphones, and stick-it notes to remind us of time sensitive events and information. With all the focus on managing time, how much time do you spend with God in prayer? Do you use God like a plumber, only calling him when you need him for an emergency? Jesus taught his followers how to pray with a prayer starting with, Our Father Jesus often blocked away time to pray in the morning, pray in a garden, and even pray high on a mountain. With the demands and expectations consistently placed upon Jesus, even our Savior found it a challenge to get away and pray but still, Jesus was never too busy not to pray. This Lent, I will preach on a series M A R C H entitled, Prayer 101. It is my hope through this preaching series that you will uncover the meaning of prayer, how to find time to pray, how to pray, the danger of prayer, and finding a deeper connection to God through prayer. The 40 days of Lent can be a special time of focus for Christians because it aids in having an intentional time of reflection and examination before the celebration of Easter. To help you on your quest for consistent and meaningful prayer, I hope you will take advantage of our FREE Lenten Devotional: 40 Days to Easter. In the devotional guide, you will find a brief scripture, meditation, and prayer that you can read as you start your day, break for lunch, or sit down for dinner. These guides are available on the Welcome Center in the Gathering Area. The sermon series and devotional prayer guide is just a start as we journey through Lent. Beginning in March, we will offer a number of small groups that will meet and study Bill Hybels small group study, Too Busy Not To Pray. In this 4-session study, you will learn to become a person of prayer. The study will examine these four concepts: Why pray?, Our Part of the Deal, When Prayer Feels Hard, and Power of Prayer. Please see the Gathering Area at church for groups and meeting times. As you can read, there are many ways in which you can grow in your faith this

2 P A G E 2 Lent. Starting on Ash Wednesday, I pray you will start with me on this journey of prayer with our Ash Wednesday 7:00 pm on March 5. This will provide a meaningful beginning to our time of Lent together. Lastly, I hope that you read through this month s Messenger to discover all the other opportunities for study, service, fellowship, and worship. This Lent, be a person committed to prayer and growing in your spirituality. May God bless you richly this lent! Love and Grace, Rev. Alan Rudnick PREACHING SERIES: PRAYER 101 As Christians we know we need prayer and that God desires our prayers as a holy connection with him. However, sometimes prayer can be challenging. Through Pastor Alan s preaching series we will examine biblical principles and practical applications that will enable us to connect with God through prayer in more meaningful ways Sunday, March 9: Prayer, What Is it Good for? Sunday, March 16: Praying Like Jesus, part 1 Sunday, March 23: Praying Like Jesus, part 2 Sunday, March 30: Praying to a Silent God Sunday, April 6: The Danger of Prayer Sunday, April 13: Palm Sunday Sunday, April 20: Prayer Celebrated: Easter DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME CHANGE Sunday, March 9, 2014 Turn your clocks one hour forward, or be late for church! FOOD PANTRY ORIENTATION MEETING Are you interested in serving or learning more about our Food Ministry? The Food Team will be holding an informational and orientation meeting on March 2 after worship. Come, and see if God is calling you to serve our community! ASH WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5 The first day of Lent is marked with a special worship service starting at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The goal of the day is to reflect upon our humanness, our need for forgiveness, and our connection to Christ s last days. These themes are symbolized by the imposition of ashes on the forehead, with the words, You are dust and to dust you shall return during the worship service. In the Old Testament, ashes were a sign of penitence and mourning. Job was known for placing ashes upon his head to mourn the loss of his family. We invite you to come, see, and experience a powerful time of worship, song, light, darkness, and exploring the spiritual life. In addition, we will take a special offering to support the Ballston Area Clergy Fund to assist needy families in our community. FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT The Church Mouse Parent Organization will present another Movie Night! When: March 7, 6:30 p.m. Where: FBC Fellowship Hall Cost: FREE! Popcorn and water will be available for purchase for 50 each. *Kids are encouraged to wear PJs, and bring a blanket/sleeping bag to sit on as they'll be sitting on the floor. WITH WARMEST APPRECIATION Dear Pastor Rudnick, members and friends of First Baptist, We want to express to you our heartfelt appreciation for the many labors of love shown to our families this past Saturday. (Feb. 22, Della Groom s memorial service) Thank you so very much for giving of your time to us. May God richly bless all of you. In His Love, Leslie Charbonneau

3 P A G E 3 ECUMENICAL LENTEN LUNCHEON Join us each Wednesday during Lent, March 12 to April 9, 12:10-12:50 p.m. for lunch and a devotional time with local Ballston Spa churches at the First Presbyterian Church. A brief devotional time will be led by a different Ballston Spa pastor each week. This year s theme is: You'll Get Through This! Finding God in the midst of our struggles, relationships, death, forgiveness, sickness, and loneliness. Pastor Rudnick will lead the service on March 26. Each church is responsible for one of the lunches. Ours is on April 9. We are seeking someone to take charge of this. If you can help, please contact the church office. LENTEN DEVOTIONAL: 40 DAYS TO EASTER As you read this FREE devotional during the Lenten season, you will experience spiritual growth through interaction with Scripture from both the Old and New Testaments. The readings culminate in the Passion Week and Easter Sunday, and you will gain a greater understanding of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus as you examine critical passion narratives in the Gospels. Through your interaction with these Lenten readings, you will be a joyful witness of God's carefully orchestrated plan to redeem the world through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. These 40 devotions will allow you to gain a more complete perspective on your personal relationship with Jesus and the power of his work in your life today. Written by Dr. Kenneth Boa, President of Reflection Ministries. Available at the Church Welcome center. Mom s Bible Study The Mom s Bible study meets on alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays. We will finish the Chase study by Jennie Allen on March 20. A new study will be determined, but new ladies are always welcome! If you d like to join please contact Becky Patnode, rebeccapatnode@hotmail.com, Child care provided. TOO BUSY NOT TO PRAY SMALL GROUP STUDY The urgent need for prayer in today s broken world is clear, but busyness still keeps many of us from finding time to pray. This study offers practical, timetested ideas on slowing down to pray. In this four-session video Bible study, Too Busy Not to Pray calls both young and old to make prayer a priority, broadening the vision for what our eternal, powerful God does when his people slow down to pray. In this study, you will learn: The importance of a consistent time and place for prayer, how to organize prayers according to tried-and-true frameworks, and how to hear the Spirit s promptings to love prayer time. As a result of this study, you will grow closer to God and experience the benefits of spending time with him. Study guide $9, optional book written by Bill Hybels $13. 4 P A G E 4 WINTER/ SPRING SUNDAY SCHOOL OFFERINGS Every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Adult Sunday School Classes Dare to Be a Daniel led by Terry van den Heever Fellowship Room The book of Daniel is an amazing blend of history and prophecy that will help you understand God s plan for the end times, and show you how to live as a Daniel in the crucial days in which we live. Its relevance to our times is amazing. Join us during the Sunday School hour as we start this study that will thrill your heart! The Confident Woman by Joyce Meyer led by Diane McGarry Historical Room What keeps women from being their best? Joyce Meyer has been helping women better themselves by helping identify emotional barriers and physical, mental, and spiritual obstacles in their lives for years. Now she provides another answer-confidence. In THE CONFIDENT WOMAN, Joyce explores the seven characteristics of a woman with confidence, which include a woman who knows she is loved, who refuses to live in fear, and who does not live by comparisons. Joyce explains that confidence stems from being positive in your actions and living honestly, but most importantly from having faith, in God and in ourselves. Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer led by Kevin Livingston & Pastor Rudnick Upper Room As the New Year turns, do you find yourself in the same patterns as 2013? Maybe it s time to learn and practice real community. The rhythms of life tend to pull us away from others when we encounter disappointment, frustration, and busyness. We invite you to our latest Upper Room Study on Sunday mornings led by Kevin Livingston & Rev. Alan Rudnick, using Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Renowned Christian minister, professor and author, Bonhoeffer recounts his unique fellowship in an underground seminary during the Nazi years in Germany. Giving practical and biblical advice on how the community of Christ can be sustained in families and groups, Life Together is bread for all who are hungry for the real life of Christian fellowship. At the conclusion of the study, our group will discern and commit to creating or sustaining a project or gathering to put our study into action. Books are $10 (optional) and are available in the church office. Income was $24,503 and expenses were $18,278. Dave Cox and Laura Marino will be auditing our year-end books. Our committee will be setting up a meeting in March with the Ballston Spa National Bank Trust Dept. for an over-view of our endowment fund. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please let us know so that they can be addressed at our meeting with the Bank. If anyone on a Board or Committee has any financial ability, please let your Chair know. We would like the B & F representatives to be someone other than the Chair to free them up from one more meeting a month. Thanks One of our main concerns is having expenses approved by the respective boards before they incur. PLEASE DO THIS. Also, it is very difficult for our treasurers to account for income and expenses when they are handed a charge card bill or an envelope of money. ALL income and expenses need to be labeled by a line-item in the budget and where they come from (example: income from Pastor's Sunday School class- book reimbursement) or (expense for books for Pastor's S.S. class). If not properly documented, they will not be recorded and will be returned to the Board Chairs. As our Trustees look at expensive renovations that are badly needed in our church building, they will be getting estimates and looking at ways to finance these improvements. We will keep the congregation updated as information becomes available. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns. Serving Him Together, Mary Ann Becker, Chair

6 P A G E 6 CHURCH MOUSE NURSERY SCHOOL Joan Mullin helping out on Penguin Day. a penguin puzzle, penguin bowling, and penguin fishing, just to name a few. The day ended with a special penguin snack that the children prepared at one of the stations. Penguins, penguins everywhere! January ended with the 4 year old and Pre-K classes participating in Penguin Day. Ten different stations were set up around the school, manned by staff, parents, and grandparents. There was We are happy to be back in two of our classrooms after the flood. It could have been so much worse, so we are counting our blessings. The staff worked many hours getting things dried out and cleaned. Room #3 had more damage than the others, so the church generously gave us permission to move that class up to the Fellowship Hall until their room was ready. The children were so excited to be in a new room. We are thankful that the Trustees hired a crew to start putting up new sheet rock ASAP. Thank you again for all involved for allowing us to return to our classrooms quickly. We are blessed with a wonderful church family who cares so much about The Church Mouse. We were able to have Room #3 repaired and freshly painted for our Open House on Saturday, February 8 th. It was wonderful meeting new families. Some of the children left crying as they did not want to leave. That is a good sign! Thank you to Kim Sprenger, Karen Kersch and Cynthia Pritchard, for helping make the new families feel welcome. There is always something fun and exciting going on at the Church Mouse. Several classes made Gingerbread Men, and after checking the oven and finding they had run away, they searched the church. Once found, they decorated them and had them for snack. All the classes had Valentine and Friendship parties. Each child brought in something to share. Pastor Alan shared the stories of Zaccheus and Jesus Welcomes the Children at Chapel Time. The children love chapel time, and I love hearing them sing the songs they learned as they go out the door. Parent/teacher conferences will be held on Friday, March 14. This is a valuable time to communicate with our parents. The teachers have been busy evaluating each child. This helps the parents determine if their child is ready for Kindergarten, or perhaps attend our Pre K class. They can also suggest different skills to practice at home to strengthen any weak areas. In Like a Lion, out like a lamb We are praying for nice spring weather during the month of March. The children will be discussing the unpredictable weather in March. There will be a Game Day, a P.J. day, and a party for Dr. Seuss birthday. You may be able to find green eggs and ham in several of our classrooms. 7 P A G E 7 DEACONS Your Board of Deacons continue to work for our congregation through the light and love of our Heavenly Father. He has certainly blessed us and has renewed our confidence in our service to Him as the New Year has dawned. We look back and revel in the magic of the Christmas season at First Baptist Church, which included our annual Christmas celebration, Christmas Eve services, and the annual community program sung by members of various community churches in the area. The greening of our church and the many evenings of the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was amazing with the addition of our newly-formed bell choir. The Church was packed with the worshiping community of believers and the Lord was very much among us during the incredible Christmastide of Our Deacons were present, assisting with the worship and feeling the love and beauty of the Christmas season. We loved sharing the Word and the Love with our congregation and our community. Praise be to God! Our ministry at Maplewood Manor continues to thrive with Bob Staulters, Judy Lister, and Mary Morelock bringing God's love and blessings to the elderly and infirmed. Our Adopt-a-Platoon also continues with packages sent on a regular basis to our Army Platoon in Kuwait. Without the help of donations from our congregation and the assistance of George Ball this ministry would not be fulfilled. Our Lord has given us opportunity in so many areas of our lives and in the life of our Church to serve Him and deliver his promise to others we are so grateful. We continue to serve our community answering the calls for help from the needy. Recently, we have approved financial assistance for those needing gas, fuel for their homes and rental assistance, bringing the love and blessings we receive inside our Church, outside to our community members in need. We are reviewing and updating our members' and friends of First Baptist listings as well as our Shepherding Lists so that we continue service within our church, making our service relevant and productive. We are filled with the Holy Spirit when we are serving God and our congregation, and we continue to look for opportunities to assist wherever we can. May the Blessings of our Heavenly Father continue to inspire all of us to His Service with Joy! Vallee Albert - Deacon LIBRARY CORNER Children s Books: 1. 8 P A G E 8 AMERICA FOR CHRIST OFFERING 2014 Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow (Isaiah 1:17) During the month of March our focus will be on our country through our America for Christ Offering. As American Baptists partnering together, we can make a difference by supporting the America for Christ Offering This year s theme Seek Justice based on Isaiah 1:17 is a biblical reminder that Jesus public ministry was all about advocacy, engagement and compassion for people in need. Through the work of American Home Baptist Mission Societies, which is supported by the America for Christ Offering, we can participate with Christ in seeking justice for those in our churches and neighborhoods. This offering supports our churches, neighborhood action programs, advocacy, training and community impact by facilitating leadership workshops and conferences, promoting excellent discipleship resources through Judson Press and providing opportunities for churches, individuals and youth groups to participate in home mission through Volunteer Ministries. Our goal this year is $2, Please prayerfully consider your gift to the America for Christ Offering and help us to reach our goal. Together, we can change lives as we seek justice as followers of Jesus Christ. Together, we can make a difference. Check American Baptist Home Mission Societies website to learn more about them Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. (Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi) First Baptist Church Mission Team MISSIONARY UPDATE FROM THE CHETTIS IN LEBANON Many of you are anxious to know how the conflict in the region is affecting us. You are, no doubt, reading news outlets and watching on T.V. the continuing violence in Syria. Lebanon was once part of Greater Syria and in many ways both nations are still connected through culture, language, religion, and familial ties. There are almost 800,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The violent conflict between the two Muslim sects, Sunni and Shia, is wrecking massive destruction of life and property. According to the International Red Cross and United Nations Human Rights organization, more than 98,000 people lost their lives in Syria so far, and almost 6,800 of them are children. There is a picture of a 3 year-old wounded Syrian boy receiving treatment at a medical facility in a war zone. It was a widely circulated picture on the web. We are told he later died; and the last words on his lips were, I am going to tell God everything when I see him. Violence and suffering can be numbing, yet only the most callous and unfeeling persons can remain unmoved by the scale of human suffering. Father God give us compassion to enter into the suffering of others; work for Peace and reconciliation wherever we are.
