1 Project Butterfly Update Shine God s Light We rejoice in and share the warmth of God s love and light by teaching the holy word, serving Christ s community, and growing together in faith. The Butterfly Team is working through Step 2: Gathering Information and will be ready to report to the congregation the summary of our findings in the October Town Hall. Step 2 gathers three types of information: Sunday Worship Service: 9:30am; Sunday School 9:40 following Children s Message in Worship The Parish Paper flemingtonpres.org September 2016 Welcome! Dear Church Family, What a wonderful welcome I have received from you over the summer in person, by phone, and text. I m grateful for your faithful worship of God and service to the kingdom here at FPC and beyond. Worship has been wonderful, full of energy and well attended despite the summer heat and humidity. I have spent the summer meeting with session elders, listening to the congregation and working with your amazing staff during the week. What a joy it has already been and my heart is overflowing with gratitude. I have called the membership which numbers over 700 people so if you haven t heard from me at least by voic , most likely we do not have a current phone number. Please call the office and let us know your new contact info so I can personally reach out to you and please know I am keeping you in my prayers. As the fall season begins, the session will retreat to focus our work together for the upcoming year and we will be inviting you all to congregational gatherings to hear from you and to share with you all the good things God is calling us to do and be. Won t you join us in this kingdom work and I look forward to partnering with each of you in ministry and mission here at Flemington Presbyterian Church. All the Glory to God! Blessings, Pastor Wonjae 1) Congregation Check In - We gathered input from over 55 people, across all generations, who either participated in forum discussions or filled out forms through May, June & July. Members shared what they love about FPC, what they are concerned about, and how FPC could be even better. 2) Financial Status - We are working to have a clear and detailed picture of how we currently spend our budgets. 3) Trends Analysis - We are reading data reports on both Flemington specific and broader US demographics and religion trends to understand the context in which we are operating. All this information is being gathered for Step 3: Goal Setting. This data will give the Goal Setting Team the perspective they need to set near and long term goals for FPC. We also welcomed Pastor Wonjae to Project Butterfly this summer. Luckily, she was able to quickly come on-board by attending three of the Butterfly Forum discussions and heard directly from the congregation. Thank you, Pastor Wonjae, for your support and partnership through this journey! Project Butterfly is a process to help the church purposely lead change for FPC with God s support, and provide direction for its people.

3 2015 Van Doren Award Recipient The Van Doren Award, established in 1965, commemorates the memory Mr. and Mrs. Bergen Van Doren s three sons who passed away within a year of each other. Recipients are Sr. High graduates seeking higher education. Criteria for this award are set forth in the two great commandments to love God and our neighbor. Christian Education committee confirms finalists based on service to church, home and community. Sam Dopp was born in the great state of Texas where he attended First Presbyterian Day School and Spicewood Springs Elementary School in Austin. At age 8, he moved to New Jersey with his family in 2006 and attended Clinton Township elementary and middle schools and North Hunterdon high school. Sam s favorite activities growing up included t-ball, football, lacrosse, reading adventure and history books, playing video games and annoying his older brother. His first involvement with Flemington Presbyterian Church was Volunteers in Mission. The VIM trip was Sam s very first independent trip away from home, and was transformative for Sam. On his return, he shared many stories with everyone he knew about the people he met, the skills he learned and how inspiring the trip was. Mostly, though, he shared with us how excited he was to participate in continuing church activities with the close friends he had made. During the school year, Sam was baptized and went through confirmation at Flemington Presbyterian Church. Throughout high school, Sam has participated in youth activities with his church family including the 30 hr. famine, lock-ins, youth trips and VIM breakfasts. Sam decided on his own to become a member of Flemington Presbyterian Church, another place he calls home. Since his first VIM trip, Sam has been inspired to contribute in many ways. He spent a summer volunteering at the YMCA preschool, he has volunteered to coach for football and lacrosse camps at North Hunterdon, and donates blood on a regular basis at the North Hunterdon High School Blood Drives. Sam aspires to become a volunteer EMT during his freshman year at Penn State Lehigh Valley in the fall of Eagle Project Thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating to my Eagle Scout project. The garden turned out beautifully, and I hope that you will visit the garden to enjoy what your donation helped make possible. The Memorial Garden began simply as a tree planted in memory of a little girl from the church who died in an accident. It was made into a garden by another Eagle Scout, Ben Hambright, several decades ago in memory of all young children who left us far too early, as is written on the plaque in the garden. The garden fell into disrepair and was not hospitable. Thanks to you, it was possible to expand and enhanced the garden to honor its original purpose. Again, thank you very much for your donation and making this whole project possible. Sincerely, Ben Sheneman
