4 P A G E 4 THE BOARD OF MISSIONS I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; Matthew 25:35 YOU ARE HERE Paul s letters remind us that as members of the church, we are so closely connected that we can think of ourselves as parts of one body. The New Testament constantly refers to followers of Jesus, not as Christians, but as a family brothers and sisters. We live this out when someone is ill, mourning, or facing a crisis. You show up. You are there for your loved ones in need. You show that love in tangible ways, a meal, a card, prayer, a hug. These acts let your brothers and sisters in Christ know that you are present with them. They know they are not alone because you are beside them. When someone you love suffers all your truest words and most loving actions simply declare: I am here. The Bible tell us that God is like us in this respect. When one of God s children suffers, God declares, I am here. God hears the cries of the poor and oppressed (Ex. 3:9, Ps. 10:17, 69:33), is near to the brokenhearted (Ps. 34:18) and to all who call on God s name (Ps. 145:18). This promise that God will be with us is throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. When Jesus tells the parable of the sheep and goats (Mt. 25:31-40), he reveals to us a mystery. God is most tangibly present in the world where people hunger, thirst, lack adequate clothing and shelter, and are sick or imprisoned. Christ claims as family members people who suffer, and tells us that Christ is so present in them that when you feed the hungry, care for the sick, welcome the stranger, you feed, and care for and welcome Christ. Anyone in need, not just your fellow Christians, but anyone anywhere in the world, these are your sisters, your brothers, your children. Their needs may be different from the people you worship with on a Sunday morning, but your tangible gifts declare the same message: I am here. By reaching out to those who suffer from natural disasters, war, or systemic poverty, you let them know they are not forgotten. Even when the need is far from home, by acting together as the body of Christ, we are able to be there for these members of Christ s family. You show them love with gifts of rice and oil. You are present by providing seeds, well pumps for clean water, and training for sustainable agriculture. Through medical kits, school supplies, temporary shelters, and safe housing you show up. In the midst of suffering, where is God? God is here. Where are you? When you give to One Great Hour of Sharing, you are here. Thank you for prayerfully considering your gift to the One Great Hour of Sharing this June. Envelopes are in the Messenger and in each pew. Coin boxes are available for adults and children at the front of the sanctuary. In the service of Christ, The Board of Missions NEW LOCAL MISSION We are collecting donations for Backstretch Workers. There is a box to collect new or slightly used items. Please speak to Mary Ann Becker if you have any questions. A detailed list of items needed are on the collection box. BIRTHRIGHT: KNITTERS NEEDED When a pregnancy test shows a positive result, we offer the young woman a pair of knitted baby booties. Right now, we are very low on booties and are looking for knitters to help replenish our supply. You help is truly appreciated. Donations may be given to Mary Ann Becker. Instructions for Knitted Booties: 1. Size 4 needles, baby yarn 2. Cast on 38 stitches 3. Knit 18 rows (9 ridges) 4. Bind off 8 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows 5. Knit on 22 stitches for 28 rows (14 ridges) 6. Bind off and sew together and turn down cuff

5 P A G E 5 BUDGET AND FINANCE COMMITTEE Through the month of April, our pledges were ahead by $2,353, which shows great commitment from our congregation. Although our non-pledged giving was behind by $2,525, combined with our pledged giving, FBC is about $5,000 ahead of where we were last year at this time. Through the month of April, FBC s expenses were $85,615 and income was $76,048 leaving a deficit of $9,567. That should not be too surprising, as we went into 2017 with a deficit budget planned based on the pledges we received from our members. Although we have a negative net income at this point, we are improved from where we were last year at this time, and we continue to have a very healthy checkbook balance of over $33,000. I am writing these words the day after FBC s semi-annual meeting, and have to say that I was thrilled with the interaction and sharing of thoughts by so many people at the meeting. There were some differing views, but the issues were talked out in a respectful manner. That is just one of many things that excite me about our FBC family we have people with many different experiences and knowledge that can be shared. What excites me even more is the passion that our congregation has for the Lord, and wanting to do wonderful things for FBC and our community. As always, FBC s Budget & Finance Committee is here to support the FBC family and the work that our members do in God s name. Please let us know what your thoughts are, and how we can support FBC from your perspective. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions. In God s Service, Troy Filburn MISSED A SERMON? Sermons from past years to last week are available on the church website: bspabaptist.org. Archived audio CDs of entire worship services are also available. Request a copy from the church office. THE BOARD OF DEACONS It s almost summer and our worship program will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary, starting July 2. We plan on no more than an hour for the service. Over this past weekend, May 19 & 20, eight of our congregation (Pat Rogers, Kevin Porter, Bob Staulters, Judy Lister, Terry van den Heever, Margaret Morahan, Wallace Cromwell and Diane McGarry) attended the seminar/ workshop entitled Healthy Congregations. What a blessing it was for all those in attendance. From what we learned we are hoping to share information to encourage the positive direction our church will be taking in the future. We discussed vision and mission with intentional purpose. Please feel free to ask any of us to explain our excitement further! In the past few years we have donated pizza gift certificates for the After the Prom activities and have done so again this year. We increased our giving from 10 to 20 certificates as they are a big hit with the students! We will be honoring graduates from High School and College on June 11. Please let us know who might be graduating. The new Board of Deacons consists of Bob Staulters, Chair, Lane Jones, Terry van den Heever, Pat Rogers and Keith Sprenger. We ask for you to keep your Deacons in prayer, as with less members, we will strive to maintain our responsibilities and involvement with the congregation. With blessing for our future together, Pat Rogers CHURCH WEEKLY S Have you been receiving our weekly s of FBC Happenings? If not and you would like to, please the church office and we will add you to our list. We would like to keep everyone updated on what s going on at our church. addresses will be kept private and used only for First Baptist Church s purposes.

6 P A G E 6 CHURCH MOUSE NURSERY SCHOOL Kids say the cutest things-a Dad was telling us about his child s Kindergarten screening. He said the teacher asked his daughter if she would count by 10. The daughter replied, How? He said the teacher looked puzzled, and asked the daughter what she meant. Well, do you want me to count in English, French or Spanish! Needless to say, the teacher was quite impressed. Way to go Church Mouse teachers. May was a very busy month. We enjoyed our Mother s Day teas and field trip to Brookside for their Sheep to Shawl program. We are looking forward to our visit with the State Farm Safety Bear and the Bike Rodeo for our 4 year old and Pre K classes. Thank you Sherry Hoffman for organizing the Bike Rodeo. We also look forward to our annual Dessert with Dad on June 1. Spending time with your child and eating ice cream sundaes from Stewart s what could be better? It is with much sadness that we have to say goodbye to Cynthia Pritchard and her family. She has been invaluable on the Church Mouse board and Parent Teacher Organization. Jamie and Cynthia have made countless signs for us, made beautiful decals to decorate our entry way, updated our brochure, and so much more. We are excited for this new chapter in their lives, but they will be sorely missed! We are glad Meric was able to enjoy his year in Time 2 Learn. Our prayers and best wishes go with the Pritchard family. Many thanks to Wendy Manzer who will also be leaving the board. We have appreciated her time and energy on the board. We will miss you Wendy. That being said, God has provided some wonderful ladies to fill the empty spots on The Church Mouse board. We welcome Laura Marino, Emily Fresn, and Becky Patnode to the board. We are thankful for their willingness to serve in this capacity. There will be Senses Week, Beach Day and Camp Day. The Parent Teacher Organization will once again plan our field days to be held on June 5 and 6. They have organized some great events this year. We will miss the parents that will be moving on as their children will be graduating. In between all of these fun activities, the classes will be busy practicing for their 3 year old promotions and 4 year old and Pre K Graduation ceremonies. There are still several openings in our Pre K class, a few openings in our morning and afternoon 4 year old classes, and we are hoping to add more 3 year olds to our afternoon class. I am thankful that all of our staff will be returning in the fall. We have enjoyed having Time 2 Learn in the building. Joan and Nicky have been a pleasure to work with. Several of the 2 year old students will be continuing at The Church Mouse. We also have families already enrolled at the Church Mouse who will be enrolling a sibling in the Time 2 Learn program. The transition from 2 year old classroom to the 3 year old classroom will be a smooth one! Make sure you contact Cheryl if you are interested in participating in the Golf Tournament on September 23. Invitations will be mailed soon. If you know of anyone that has not participated in the past but would like to do so this year, please let me know and I will be sure to mail them an invitation. Our promotions and graduations will take place at the end of class on Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14 in the sanctuary. The times are listed below. All are welcome to attend. Tues., 9 a.m. - Mrs. Rowe s Pre K. Wed., 9 a.m. - Mrs. Heckman s AM 4 s. Wed., 10:30 a.m. - Mrs. McGlynn s 4 s. Wed., 12:30 p.m. - Mrs. Heckman s PM 4 s. It will be quiet downstairs after June 16. All of the toys and materials will be cleaned and put away for the fall. Jennie and I will be in the office through the end of June. Normal office hours will resume the beginning of August. Serving Christ together, Cheryl Dunkelbarger
