F I R S T P R E S B Y T E R I A N C H U R C H Circuit Rider Serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination and love. June 2017 Vol. 61, No. 6 Kathy s Corner June 4 th, we explode from Easter into Pentecost. As we celebrate the Holy Spirit moving the disciples to tell more people about Jesus and the birthday of the church, we look to ways the Spirit impels us to speak and act today. We receive the Pentecost Offering (for children and youth ministries), celebrate the Lord s Supper and adjourn worship for an all-church lunch and our Annual Meeting. At Friday Farmer s Market, besides running into church friends, you will find the Presbyterian Preschool offering an activity for children on June 9. There are still openings for Fall in the 3 and 4 year old classes. A search committee is seeking a new preschool Director/Teacher, as Katie Ponder has resigned to stay home with her daughter. Applications and job description are available from the church office. On Sunday, June 11, we will honor our loyal church school teachers, Kate Hansen, Michele Madril and Diana Zimmerman. Church school continues into the summer with a new curriculum An Illustrated Earth: Celebrating God's Creation focuses on Bible stories that celebrate different aspects of God's creation: water, plants, food and animals. Students hear a biblical story, reflect on it with open questions and discussion, and have a chance to create a piece of art based on the story. June 18, at 10:30am we head to Westminster Woods for worship and a picnic. Youth will be confirmed and their fathers will be our liturgists as we celebrate Baptism and the Lord s Supper. (A great way to spend Father s Day!) This month I take some vacation time for a family reunion and also travel to Baltimore for the annual conference of the ecumenical Interim Ministry Network. Alice has some vacation, too, so call before coming in to see us at the office. Thank you to all who participated in special projects around the church last month. From the prep and paint crew who made the CAPECO/Youth House exterior look sharp to the Levi-wearing cleaners who cleaned sanctuary pews and Rogers Room light fixtures, from Confirmation Retreat chaperones to the Indonesian dinner/auction crew, from loyal commission members to Annual Report writers, thank you! As the pool opens and you transition into summer activities, don t forget the important relationships and ministries of your church. We worship every Sunday and serve throughout the year. Extra hands will be needed Wednesday June 21 as we serve lunch at Salvation Army. Look for other places where the Spirit is moving in our community. Blessings, Kathy

Preschool Teacher/Director - Presbyterian Preschool seeks p/t Teacher/Director. Requires Bachelor s degree in education/early childhood, two years experience with children. Twenty-five hours/ week with salary of $18,000 per year. Job description and application in the church office. Deadline June 1. House & Grounds update: Thank you to all volunteers. On Levite/levi Sunday, 14 of us vacuumed all the pew cushions, washed the pew backs, washed the light coverings in the Roger's Room and the kitchen sills. Thanks to Gary and Diana Zimmerman, Shirley and Ernie Cristler, Connie and Bob Talboy, Katherine and Pete Hernberg, Lorna Waltz, Lynda Balch, Martha Landers, Chuck Wood, Judy Witte and Rod Nixon. Kathy Keener and Steve Muller were sorting the choir room. The church house is close to being completely painted. Chuck, Judy and Don received valuable help from Theresa Ulrich, Heidi Van Kirk, Jack Simons, Steve Muller, John Turner, Diana Zimmerman, Katherine Krauel-Hernberg and Bob Hall in power washing, scraping, priming and painting. It's looking much improved and hope all like the colors. By the end of Memorial Day, it should be mostly complete. People working together makes work more fun and gets a lot done. If I've forgotten anyone, please forgive me and know your help was much appreciated. Judy Witte Church in the Woods June 18, :30 am Westminster Woods is providing a Ham and Scalloped Potato lunch after the service. Please bring salads and desserts. The fathers of our Confirmands will help to lead worship. We will share the sacrament of the Lord s Supper. Our prayers and affirmation encourage the faith of our youth who claim Jesus and the Church this day. There will NO CHURCH service at 201 SW Dorion Ave. that Sunday.

Christian Education News Children s Sunday School The Christian Education Commission will be celebrating our Sunday School Teachers during Time for Children June 11th. There will be no Sunday School June 18th at Church in the Woods. We will be celebrating the Confirmands. Please remember to pray for our young people and their mentors during this faith process. Summer Sunday School begins June 25th. The curriculum is An Illustrated Earth: Celebrating God s Creation It focuses primarily around a particular biblical story for the week, and all of the components of each of the lessons point back to that biblical story. We know that our Sunday School children and their families have a variety of summer plans which take us out of town some weekends. We will have children s Sunday School, during its regular time during service, unless we have less than two children. If that occurs, there will not be Sunday School. Congratulations to the Pendleton High School Graduates Avery Madril and Colin Rickman Daniel Powell May 5, University of Central Florida, Ph.D. in Philosophy, Doctorate of Text and Technology Deputy Jeff Brown graduates from DPSST Basic Police Academy

It is always such a wonderful time! Please call the Church office for more information. In order to keep the fees for our 2016 VBS/Day Camp at a reasonable level, we are asking for donations of food items for the twice daily snacks. Please bring donations of the following items to the church office. Monetary donations are always welcome so we can purchase the items we still need closer to the start of camp. 6 Buy a seat on the Day Camp Bus! Last year we had 110 campers and over 60 volunteers to help make VBS a success. We were recently surprised to be informed of a dramatic increase to the costs of transporting the children by bus. Our previous year s cost was $24.69 per child; this year the increase brings us to $38.80 per child. Passing this increase on to our campers would significantly increase their cost and many families would not be able to attend. Please consider a donation to help pay for a child s seat on the bus. With your help, we are looking forward to another successful Day Camp. Thank you for your support! You can donate in the offering plate or in the church office. THANK YOU! A note from the church laundress... If you are working in the kitchen and have wet dish towels to leave, could you please leave them on top of the laundry basket or somewhere close to it? When wet towels are left, mildew occurs and despite all my best and cleverest efforts, I cannot get the mildew out of the towels. Thank you! I try to check once a week for laundry!!

PENTECOST June 10 a.m. When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak. Acts 2: 1-4 Peter replied, Change your hearts and lives. Each of you must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for you, your children, and for all who are far away as many as the Lord our God invites. With many other words he testified to them and encouraged them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. Those who accepted Peter s message were baptized. God brought about three thousand people into the community on that day. Acts 2:38-41 Wear Red (or another flame color). Bring a red geranium (which will be planted in the church yard after worship) Prepare a special gift for the Pentecost Offering - 40% of this offering gives children the experience of Westminster Woods Summer Day Camp; 60% funds programs for children and youth throughout the PC(USA). Be ready for fire and wind (as well as music and the Word) to stir our spirits! All Church Lunch and Annual Meeting follows worship at 11:15 a.m. With the aid of projection, we will celebrate with pictures the past year of ministry at First Pres and how it has touched our lives. We hear reports of upcoming plans. Importantly, we will elect elders, deacons, Endowment Commission and Nominating Committee members. All members of the congregation have a vote. Pentecost Offering Over the past month at least five different people have stepped forth to talk about programs for children and youth within the Pendleton First Presbyterian Church and the Community. You may have heard about foster care programs, the Presbyterian Preschool Program, the collaboration between the Youth House and CAPECO, or Summer Camp at Westminster Woods. Each of these programs focuses upon our most valuable resource, our children. The Pentecost Offering to be received on Sunday, June 4 th, is one opportunity to give to children and youth. Your gift helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people and addresses the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering will be retained by our congregation to make an impact in the lives of young people within our own church and community. The remaining 60% will be used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency at large. This year, as stated in the May Circuit Rider, our 40% of the Pentecost Offering will go toward Summer Camp expenses at Westminster Woods. If you would like more information about the Pentecost Offering, please go to the PS(USA) website. Or, stop by the office to receive an additional flyer. The weekly bulletin has had a insert each Sunday and extra copies are available at the office. Thank you for your support. The Mission Commission

Ingredients for the Eggplant Curry Author: SpicieFoodie.com & Nancy Lopez-McHugh 2 large eggplants, even sized pieces 2 large tomatoes, diced 1 large red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced fresh ginger 4 cm/1.5 inch piece finely chopped (or ½ teaspoon ginger powder) 1 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp whole cumin seed ¼ tsp mustard seeds 2 curry leaves (I left this out) 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp Garam Masala* fresh chile or Chili powder- to your taste 2 tbsp vegetable oil Directions: 1. In a large pan heat the oil, warm onions, chile and ginger, cook until onion has softened. Next add all of the spices and cook for 3 minutes, stirring often to prevent burning. Next add tomatoes and eggplant and mix until the eggplant has been well coated with the spices. 2. Cover and simmer under medium low heat until the eggplant has cooked all the way through, is soft and the liquid has evaporated leaving a thick mixture. Taste for salt and spiciness, and adjust to your taste. Apricot Chutney 1 pound dried apricots 10 large cloves garlic, peeled and coarsely chopped ( I used half this) A 1-by-3-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 1/4 cups red wine vinegar 2 cups sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 to 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper ( I used much less) 3/4 cup golden raisins 1/2 cup currants Put the apricots in a bowl. Pour 4 cups of hot water over them and let them soak for an hour. Put the garlic and ginger into the container of an electric blender or a food processor along with 1/4 cup of the vinegar. Blend until smooth. Empty the apricots and their soaking liquid into a heavy stainless-steel or porcelain-lined pot. Add the garlic-ginger mixture, the remaining vinegar, sugar, salt, and cayenne. Bring to a boil. Simmer on a medium flame, stirring frequently, for 45 minutes. Do not let the chutney catch at the bottom of the pot. Lower heat if necessary. Add the raisins and currants and cook, stirring, another half hour or until chutney takes on a thick, glazed look. (It will thicken slightly as it cools.) Let the chutney cool and store, refrigerated, in lidded glass or ceramic jars. Recipes copyright 1981 by Madhur Jaffrey
