Background Information / Teacher Helps A people group is considered unreached when the number of Evangelical Christians is less than 2% of its population. 1 Kazakhstan is filled with many different people groups, the Kazakh composing one of their largest people groups. Statistics from JoshuaProject show 69 different people groups in Kazakhstan; 37 of these groups are considered unreached. 2 The other groups have a slightly higher percentage of knowing God, but there are many in these groups who still need to hear about forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Kazakhstan, formerly a Soviet-block country, broke free from the USSR quite ironically during the year of the 75th anniversary of the revolution of 1917, when communists cast off the rule of the czar. Soviet rule brought domination in the form of farm cooperatives, industrialization, modernization, and nuclear testing to this area. Those who had bought into this lifestyle were Slavic. Most of the rural populations that were largely Turkish struggled to maintain living in the rural areas that were damaged by domination of cooperative government run farms, domination of religion (many churches and mosques closed under Soviet rule), and large poisonous lakes made by craters caused by nuclear testing. 3 Since communist/atheistic ideologies of the Soviets caused these cultural, environmental and ecological tragedies, Kazakhs have maintained a level of wariness to Slavic or European faces. Turkish and Muslims people came to associate the European-looking faces with the Communist domination of their land. Longstanding prejudices regard Christianity as the religion of their oppressors, even though Christianity was also persecuted under Soviet rule. 4 Many competing ideologies have entered Kazakhstan including Isalm, Ba hai, Moonies, and the Hare Krishnas. Many Kazakhs are confused and need solid spiritual teaching The Land and People of Kazakhstan, Lerner Publications, Minneapolis, Operation World Prayer Calendar, 2001 Gabriel Resources. 3 LESSON PLAN ACTIVITY STATIONS Craft Multicultural Puppets Instructions: Set out craft sticks, glue sticks, multicultural crayons, scissors and figures. Have each child cut out one puppet figure, then color it. Children need to fold puppet on dotted line and glue to craft stick. They can take puppets home to remind them to pray for the unreached children of the world. Explain these religions (Tribal, Hinduism, Muslim, Buddhism and the people of China) make up the majority of those who have not heard about Jesus. They do not know that He died on the cross for the sins of all people in the world and that all they need to do is accept this as being true for them. GIVING CAMPAIGN Southeast Asia Youth Centers Who can tell me what the money in our green giving globe is going to? (The money will be used to support the Youth Centers of Southeast Asia. These centers provide a place for children who have very little to have fun in a safe environment, playing pingpong, having movie nights or playing in soccer tournaments, etc. The centers also provide a place to do things like Bible studies and small group discussions.) The children who use these youth centers not only need your help so they can continue have access to them, they also need your prayers. Let s pray that they will experience the love of God through the witness of the Christians in their lives and receive Christ some day. (Main campus classrooms, please be sure to check out the bulletin board next to the Oasis storage room for the campaign s current progress.) INTRODUCTION Once again, it s missions week. Today we will be talking about unreached people groups. But first let s begin our time with prayer. Who can tell me what a people group is? A people group is a collection of people who have something in common. XENOS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 1999/00 rev 2013 Missionary God K/1 st Missions#4 Page 3
OBJECT LESSON People Groups What people groups do we have here in this room? (Make up some from the collection of people you have in front of you. Some examples might be: girl people group, boy people group, blue-eyes people group, 6-year-olds people group, tennis shoe-wearing people group, etc. Have the children come to the front of the room to show what a people group looks like.) We see that there are a lot of different people groups right here in this room. But what is an Unreached People Group? What do we mean by that? (An unreached people group is a group of people with some of the same characteristics, like how they dress, what they eat, the language they speak, their religion like the puppet fingers you made who haven t heard about God.) We call them unreached because they haven t been reached yet with the message that God loves them and wants to be their friend. LESSON Today we re going to talk about a country where there are a lot of unreached people. It is called Kazakhstan. Let me show you on the map (or globe) where Kazakhstan is in relation to us. There are at least 48 different people groups in Kazakhstan. Forty-three of these people groups are considered unreached. Almost no one in these people groups has heard about how God loves them. The Kazakh, one of the largest people groups in Kazakhstan, is a group of people missionaries have been trying to tell about God. Instead of music this week, we will get to watch an interesting video about the children of Kazakhstan. It can be very difficult for the Kazakhs to know what to believe. They have people from all different religions telling them they have the only way to God. These people have different beliefs about who God and Jesus are. Or they may believe in many gods or evil spirits who all want the Kazakhs to follow what they believe. The Kazakhs need to hear the truth. We need people who will tell the Kazakhs the truth about God and his love for them through Jesus Christ. Let s look at our verse for today. It is: And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it (Matthew 24:14). God wants everyone to know about Jesus, His son, and how Jesus loves us all so much that He willingly died on the cross for all of our bad choices. All XENOS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 1999/00 rev 2013 Missionary God K/1 st Missions#4 Page 4
we have to do is ask for forgiveness based on His death on the cross. This is the Good News about the Kingdom. We have had the chance to hear this message and ask for forgiveness for all the things we ve done wrong, but God wants everyone to have this chance. He gave us the job of sharing this message throughout the world, especially to the unreached people groups of the world. Can any of you remember what this is called? We talked about it in our last missions lesson. It is called the Great Commission. VIDEO Kids around the World: The Kazakhs ALSO FOUND ON YOUTUBE (search: Kazakh Kids Around the World ) Alternative: If there is no access to a TV or the DVD, read the Kool Kazakh Facts sheet and go through the answers with the kids. SMALL GROUP We just learned a lot of great information about the Kazakh children! Let s see what you remember. How do Kazakh kids help their parents? (Answers might be: do family chores, sift flour, make noodles, chop wood, do farm work, work at the market stand.) What do Kazakh children do for fun? (Answers might be: play games, make up games, go to playgrounds, go to amusement parks.) If they haven t heard about God, what do Kazakh children believe in? (Answers might be: Allah Islam, spirits, evil spirits, no god atheism.) How do Kazakh children eat? Do you remember how they sat down to eat? Kazakhstan Prayer Picnic (Spread out a sheet or blanket on the floor for your small group, just like was done in the video.) Let s sit on the floor on the edges of our blanket, with our feet toward the outside. (Show them how to put their feet off the blanket to one side.) It is considered bad manners to have our feet near the table. First, we will pray and then we will have a little Kazakhstan snack. As we saw in the video and talked about, Kazakh children do things that are similar to us. They live in the country and in the city. They like to play games and have fun. They help their parents. One thing that is very different, though, is that they haven t heard about God and how God loves them. XENOS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 1999/00 rev 2013 Missionary God K/1 st Missions#4 Page 5
Before we pray, I would like to share something with you. (Take a blank copy of the maze along with a pencil.) There are four things the children of Kazakhstan need: prayer, missionaries, money and God s word. (Have the children help find the way to the center of the maze.) Now let me show you how prayer can help in each of these areas. (As you go over each of the 4 needs, draw an arrow with permanent marker from each of the objects, straight into the center of Kazakhstan.) See how God can overcome barriers. Our prayers can help God do this. < Example of maze illustration Prayer I don t know about you, but sometimes I find it hard to pray. Let s ask God for help in praying for all of the unreached people in Kazakhstan. Missionaries We need to pray for the missionaries who are already in Kazakhstan and for more missionaries to go there. God s word We can pray for more bibles to be sent to Kazakhstan, but we also need to pray for someone there who can help teach the Kazakhs about God. Money We can pray that people (include us) give money that will help with the job of helping the people of Kazakhstan find out that God loves them. (As a child prays, he/she squeezes the prayer ball. Explain to the children that just as they change the prayer ball when they squeeze it, their prayers change the shape of our real world also.) GAME People Groups Step Forward This game is fun and will help us think about people groups. Instructions: Have the children line up side-by-side against the wall at the far end of the room. An adult teacher will stand at the opposite end of the room; mark a line using Velcro across the floor. The goal is for all of the children to eventually cross the line. The teacher will bring the children closer to them by saying: XENOS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 1999/00 rev 2013 Missionary God K/1 st Missions#4 Page 6
All the children of the people group take step(s) forward. If a child steps forward and it s obvious they are not of that people group, they are then to take two steps backward. The teacher will keep naming off people groups and steps until everybody has reached the line. Have everyone celebrate when all have children have reached the goal! Examples of people groups: Examples of steps: Girls Wearing boots 4 baby Boys Wearing a watch 1 giant Brown hair Not wearing socks 2 regular Blue eyes Have a pierced ear 3 hopping Wearing red Watch cartoons 2 skipping After playing the game this way, the children can grab the puppet they made at the beginning of class. Explain that these actually represent the five main unreached people groups of the world. The game can be played with each child representing the people group of their puppet.
