CIRCUIT RIDER Volume 5 Issue 61 May 2017 Kathy s Corner What a glorious Easter! An immense thank you to all who attended, to the kids with their Easter questions for me! Special thanks to the musicians and choir, the Worship Commission for planning and hanging the paraments, House and Grounds for cleaning up the property and the Wilkins for a beautiful Fellowship time. And our Easter season continues! Eastertide runs this whole month until Pentecost June 4th. I am excited about the Indonesian Rice Table dinner to raise funds for the Presbyterian Women s Global Fellowship trip to Indonesia. The dinner and auction look wonderful. This month we will be focusing on ministries with children and youth. Minutes for Mission are planned from our Preschool, Day Camp/VBS and Youth House. Together, we will learn how we reach out to care for young people in our community. Our Confirmation Class has five fine young people: Ashlynn Madril, Brody Ulrich, Eliana Hansen, Gabrielle Fitzmorris and Kaylee Zimmerman. I will be taking them on a retreat at Westminster Woods in early May. We are working toward confirmation on Father s Day when we Worship at the Woods. As the school year winds to a close, our Preschool has Open House and Registration for next year; their Mother s Tea and Circus. (Preschool Director and Lead Teacher Katie Ponder has given us notice that she wants to stay home with her baby, so we are beginning a search for her replacement.) Graduation Sunday is May 21st. Please let the church office know of graduates in your family. The Oregon Music Teachers Association holds student recitals at FPC. (You may attend the Honors Concert on Monday, May 15 at 6:30pm.) And, I hope that you are getting a chance to be outdoors, to putter with plants, go for a walk and to connect with God s creation. Please consider joining me to fly kites on May 21st. (The day Mary Poppins flew in, one of our kids asked me if it was possible. Let s make it happen!) Let s go fly a kite, up to the highest height! Let s go fly a kite and send it soaring, up through the atmosphere, up where the air is clear! Oh, let s go fly a kite! Blessings, Kathy

Let s go fly a kite! Where: Rice-Blakey Park 2220 SW Quinney Ave, Pendleton When: Sunday, May 21 st Drop by between 2:00pm -4:00pm We hope that kids of all ages will join us for some old-fashioned fun! If you have expertise at tails and string, or getting kites up, you may offer to help others or bring a lawn chair if you want to sit and watch. Wear shoes/sandals in which you can walk/run safely. (Flip Flops are a flop when kite flying.) House and Grounds Spring has sprung and so has the H&G commission. April 1 found 8 of us working on the grounds. Eliana and David Hansen weeded then helped Chuck Wood str ipe the par king lot after Chuck cemented the er oding dr ainage grate by the church. Kate Hansen, Connie and Bob Talboy, Kathy Keener and Judy and Don Witte (on 3/30) pruned and removed leaves and weeds from under and around the shrubs to make it look nice for Palm Sunday and Easter. The first adventure in purging the inside of the church was 4/21. Chuck, Joanne English, our great custodian, and Judy loaded 600# of computers and monitors and took them to the transfer station. They also found 700# of junk in the basement that went into Dave Lange's trailer which he removed and used the church sanitary station coupon. Judy Wilkins had started sorting the stage so her pile of junk was added to the total. Yah! A good start to an ongoing project. Thank you all. The lawn is being mowed weekly by H&G members. If anyone wants to be on a substitute list, please let us know. Upcoming events: 1. Painting the rental house in May. Steve Muller will help us with his power washer and paint spr ayer. The trim will be white and need to be painted by hand so we'll need some help with that and with covering the windows and doors. By the time this comes out, there will be two areas of paint on the back of the house, blue and grey. Anyone who wants to, can vote for which they like. Those are the only choices. 2. Church yard sale will be Friday 6/16. This will only include treasures found in the church with the proceeds going toward more H&G projects. It will not include items from members homes. We are very interested in welcoming more volunteers at future cleanups. The dates will be in the Sunday bulletins and Alice will know them. We don't know them yet. Thank you all again, we are off to a good start. Judy Witte
The Westminster Woods Commission is calling for any persons interested in presenting a proposal to build a labyrinth at the Woods. The person (or persons) should be prepared to bring a plan, cost analysis and timeline. If interested, please call Dave Powell, , Chair. Check out and follow First Presbyterian Church Pendleton on Facebook. When you follow, you may choose to see church news first on your page and you may elect to receive notifications when something is posted. Then, share your opinion of the church, so that others will learn what is significant here. In the past month, there have been articles posted on: Immigration and Sanctuary Muslim Youth guarding churches in Jordan for Easter Prayers Church shows love for Muslim Neighbors Maundy Thursday Presbyterian Disaster Assistance One Great Hour of Sharing Origin of Easter Eggs A Found Child Presbytery meeting Holy Humor Sunday 136 people saw our 3/26 article on Muslim women gathering in London to condemn an attack! Sunday 5/21 will be Levi Sunday. Wear work clothes and immediately after service all who can and want to will clean parts of the inside church from 11-1pm. Bring rags and paper towels to use and the jobs will be listed for each to choose. It should be fun, a good way for all to participate AND get some of those odd jobs done.
Mission News MOTHER S DAY PROJECT Healthy Women Healthy Families is a year-round PC(USA) support ministry of Presbyterian World Mission in collaboration with Presbyterian Women. Passionate Presbyterians like you have helped provide mosquito nets and fistula repairs for women in Africa, trauma healing and psychosocial programs for refugee families in the Middle East, health and hygiene training for female factory workers in Asia, and small business loans for women across the globe. Together, we are helping make a difference alongside our global partners. Honor special women in your life by sending these unique cards. We are not selling the cards for a set amount, but donations of any amount are welcome. The cards are available in the narthex, the corridor, the Rogers Room and the church office. Please make checks payable to: First Presbyterian Church. After donations are collected, one check will be sent to PC(USA). This will be the last year of the Mother s Day Project, but the work supported by the Healthy Women Healthy Families fund will continue through PC(USA) World Mission. Thank you for sharing God s love through this mission outreach for the past twelve years. Children, Youth, and the Pentecost Offering What s happening during Sundays in May? A gift to the Pentecost Offering on June 4th helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people and address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency which include Young Adult Volunteers, Ministries for Youth, Children at Risk, and Child Advocacy. This year 40% of the offering will go toward Summer Day Camp in July at Westminster Woods. Young Adult Volunteers The Young Adult Volunteer program is a one year service opportunity for young adults from 19 to 30 years. YAVs live in intentional Christian community, deepening and developing their faith while serving alongside partners in locations across the United States and around the world. YAVs serve for one academic year, August July, as they explore God s calling in their lives. Volunteers are placed in community agencies or local churches, with jobs depending on the needs of partners and the skills of the Young Adult Volunteer. YAVs are exposed to some of the hardest problems in the world poverty, violence and reconciliation, and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ while living and reflecting with other volunteers on the meaning and motivation of their Christian faith. Ministries for Youth The Presbyterian Youth Triennium is an example of one of the Ministries for Youth sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. Last July one of our youth, Brody Ulrich, attended the Triennium in July 2017 at Purdue. He was joined by nine other young people from Eastern Oregon, two from LaGrande and nine from Baker. Three adults including Theresa Ulrich traveled as chaperones. Children at Risk and Child Advocacy Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) launched a church wide initiative calling on Presbyterians to work with partners in the U.S. and worldwide to improve the quality of education for one million children by This initiative builds on the Presbyterian history of both educational mission and advocacy and support for access to public education. On the national level, this initiative will center around 2 major issues: 1. Strengthening early childhood education 2. Reducing the dropout rate of adolescents The national initiative will identify and share best practices and resources for local educational mission; support public education policy at the national, state, and local levels; train and equip new leaders for child advocacy; and connect with others in our common call to walk alongside our children as they live into their identities as children of God. During the triennium, Presbyterian Women are focusing on developing and strengthening children s literacy. Each Sunday during May members of the community and/or church will be sharing their thoughts about each of these Ministries. Please bring your own thoughts and questions!
Christian Education News Sunday School Sunday School meets weekly for children through 6th grade. We will continue using the Curriculum, Growing with Grace and Gratitude, through the end of the school year, and then begin a new summer curriculum. There will be no Sunday School, May 28, due to the holiday weekend. VBS Day Camp Mark your calendars! Vacation Bible School will be at Westminster Woods July The VBS Adventure this summer is, Maker Fun Factory, Created by God, Built for a Purpose. VBS is for children first grade through fifth grade, with opportunities for youth helpers and adult volunteers. Last year we had 110 campers and over 60 volunteers to help make this program a success. We were recently surprised to be informed of a dramatic increase to the costs of transporting the children by bus. Our previous year s cost was $24.69 per child; this year he increase brings us to $35.80 per child. Passing this increase on to our campers would significantly increase their cost and many families would not be able to attend. Please consider a donation to help pay for a child s seat on the bus. With your help, we are looking forward to another successful Day Camp. Thank you in advance for your support!
