1 THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT A SERVICE OF THE WORD March 10, 2019 We shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matthew 4.4 Collect Almighty God, whose Son fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are but did not sin, give us grace to discipline ourselves in submission to your Spirit, that as you know our weakness, so we may know your power to save; through Jesus Chris our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. 2 The First Sunday in Lent March 10, 2019 A SERVICE OF THE WORD During Lent, we begin our services with the Trisagion, an ancient cry for God s mercy and a penitential rite. Celebrant: Dear Friends, we gather this day on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Nation. All: May we dwell on this land with respect and peace. (During Lent, the crucifer, choir, and presider move into center aisle; the congregation turns to face inward for this opening penitential rite.) This is our journey, O God, and you are our guide May we travel together Prayer of Confession ~ an act of letting go. Presider: When we travel through Lent, we travel light. The story is heavy enough. What must we let go? (silence) We let go of the history that shames us, what we have done in the past to peoples of the past. We thank you, O God, that you have again brought us together to praise you for your goodness and to ask your blessing give us grace to see your hand in the week that is past, and your purpose in the week to come; through Christ our Lord. Amen Confession and Absolution Dear friends in Christ, as we turn our hearts and minds to worship almighty God, let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God s commandments and to live in love and peace with our neighbour. Let us pray Most merciful God, We confess that we have sinned against you In thought, word and deed, By what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; We have not loved our neighbours and as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us and forgive us, That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, To the glory of your name. Register: ottawaanglican.evenbrite.com or call ext Our Lenten Observance Traditionally Lent (the word Lent comes from the same root as length and refers to the lengthening days of approaching spring. Lent is a time of preparation for the celebration of Christ s death and resurrection. The forty days of Lent are given to fasting, prayer and almsgiving. ( Alms refers to money). Lenten Sundays are not fast days because Sunday is always a Feast of the Resurrection. As Jesus taught, our spiritual and Lenten practices are for our inner lives and are not meant to bolster our egos or to impress others. Practical ways of keeping Lent are: Prayer: Set aside specific times of the day for prayer, reading, or quiet time. The services of Morning and Evening Prayer may be read with Bible readings from Forward Day By Day as well as the meditations. Regular worship and attending weekday services or studies are appropriate. Borrow a book from the Parish Library. Fasting: Eating simpler, smaller meals is a way to keep a physical reminder of our spiritual journey. If you give up something, it should be an item that will be genuinely missed. Refraining from rich food and eating non-meat protein (eggs, nuts, beans, cheese) or fish, especially on Fridays, is suggested. The Prayer Book and BAS refer to Fridays as days of abstinence. Almsgiving: Making an extra financial commitment to the church or a suitable charity or project is suggested. Spending less on food, restaurants, entertainment and luxuries would enable us to have money for these extra financial gifts. Please consider taking on something new or extra and engaging in some personal action for others. Lent with the Liturgy During Lenten liturgy certain changes are made to reflect the aspects of preparation: - The colour purple is penitential and reminds us of the robe of mockery placed on Jesus by the soldiers. - The word Alleluia is not used until we hear it fresh and new at the Easter Vigil, since it is an Easter word (Hebrew for Praise the Lord ). - The Gloria in Excelsis is omitted and is usually replaced by a more penitential hymn or canticle, such as the Kyrie. The singing of the Gloria is a highlight of the Easter Vigil. - The Paschal Candle is removed from the church. - Baptism does not take place during Lent, since it is the Easter Sacrament. - These rules do not apply to funerals, since the funeral liturgy is an Easter liturgy. 9 READINGS FOR THE FIRST DAY IN LENT March 10, 2019 A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us. When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me. You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Dt 26:1-11 Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church Response: Thanks be to God A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (That is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
