1 Trinity Highlights The Newsletter of Trinity Lutheran Church 700 S. Fourth St., Pekin, IL ~ Rev. Simeon Raddatz, Pastor February, 2018 Wednesday, February 14 Ash Wednesday Chili Supper 5:30 p.m. Our youth will once again sponsor the Chili Supper on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Along with chili, there will also be chicken noodle soup, grilled ham & cheese, peanut butter & jelly, drinks and dessert. A free-will offering will be taken at the door. Donations received will go towards our youth programs. Attention All Young People and Parents Junior High and High School youth are asked to bring a pot of their best chili and/or dessert to share. The youth need to help work at the dinner (set-up, serving, clean-up). Pre-warmed chili should be dropped off at the church kitchen on Ash Wednesday by 4:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday Service 7:00 p.m. Following the Chili Supper we will have our Ash Wednesday Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. As is our tradition, we will observe Ash Wednesday with the imposition of ashes. Ashes symbolize dust-to-dust and remind us of our mortality. Easter proclaims that, through Christ, God resurrects us from our dust and ashes, and makes us new creatures and brings life out of death. Lenten Fellowship As is our tradition, we will have Lenten fellowship following our Lenten Services. Trinity families are asked to donate one dozen cookies on the Wednesday that your name falls under. February 21 Abatie - Fuchs February 28 Garber - Juergens March 7 March 14 March 21 Kincaid - Olt Palmer - Suhs Tadlock - Zevnik Community Outreach During the Lenten Season we direct our hearts and minds to Christ. Lent is a good time to give to projects that will help those in need. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 This year we will collect a different item each Wednesday to benefit Pekin Township. We are collecting baby items to help infants in need. Items may also be brought in the Sunday before. There will be a box in Room 10 to put your items in. These are the items we will be collecting: February 21 February 28 March 7 March 14 March 21 Baby Food Baby Cereal Baby Wipes Baby Bottles Baby Juice

Rob Fornoff Chairman - Board of Finance Peoria Area Lutherans for Life Life Essay Contest Peoria Area Lutherans for Life wishes to announce their 19th Annual Life Essay Contest for students in grades 5-8 and for high school students. Essays should reflect the student s feeling on life issues. Where possible the student s thoughts, as expressed in the essay, should be substantiated by God s Word. If other works are used for research or are quoted, they should be credited with footnotes and a bibliography. This year we have chosen a theme for the contest from John 10:10: I (Jesus) came that they may have life and have it abundantly. All entries should be submitted to: Peoria Area Lutherans for Life 908 W. Hanssler Place Peoria, Illinois Entries must be submitted no later than March 26, Be sure each essay has the student s name, grade and school (or congregation) listed on the title page. Suggested subject areas for the essay and prize levels are on the fliers on the bulletin board. One flyer is for grades 5-8 and the other for high school students. Please contact with any questions. The Concordia Society The Concordia Society met on Thursday, January 11. Loretta Harms led us in devotions and was also the hostess. Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 8 at 1:30 p.m. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Transportation Help Needed! We are in need of people who will help with transportation! There are some who would like to come to church if they had a way to get here. This is an important ministry, as transportation should never be the reason anyone is prevented from worship and fellowship. Please contact Pastor Raddatz if you would be able to help with this ministry. Sunday School December Leah Brown Elizabeth Deverman Ella Spaeth

4 What Have I Done for Him? Lent is a season in the church year during which we particularly focus on the sacrifice Jesus made for us to pay the debt we owed for our sin. We know there is no way we can pay the debt ourselves. Only the sinless Son of God could do that. We have access to heaven only by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. While we cannot repay Jesus for what He has done for us, His love does require a response. Paul, speaking of our ministry of reconciliation, wrote, "For Christ's love compels us... (2 Corinthians 5:14). We remain on earth to carry out the tasks which Christ left for us to do: - to feed the hungry, - clothe the naked, - care for the sick, and - visit the prisoner, (Matthew 25:31-46). James admonished us that...faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead (James 2:17). We provide the funds that support our pastors, teachers, and missionaries. Again, we can quote Paul writing in 1 Corinthians 9: "If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more?" `Certainly each of us is addressed by the Great Commission: "Go and make disciples of all nations..." (Matthew 28:19). The following words from Frances Ridley Havergal are a poignant reminder that Christ s love and sacrifice for us require a response: Thy life was given for me, Thy Blood, O Lord, was shed that I might ransomed by, and quickened from the dead. Thy life was given for me, What have I given for Thee? And Thou hast brought to me down from Thy home above salvation full and free, Thy pardon and Thy love. Great gifts Thou broughtest me, What have I brought to Thee? We are saved by grace through faith for works. Let us pray for the desire to be good stewards of the gifts of salvation, health and wealth, and time and opportunity which God has given us that we might have a part in the furthering of God's kingdom. Annual Report Time The deadline for reports to be included in the 2017 Annual Report is Sunday, February 25. The Church Council members as well as secretaries and treasurers of the various organizations are asked to submit a report. If you are in doubt as to whether you should write a report, please check with the church office. ISU Wittenberg Lutheran Center Free Speakers Forum - How can a Christian bear witness in a secular public square? - How has the parenting paradigm changed in the last 50 years? - What have been the cultural and governmental influences on God's design? Silent Witnesses 2018 Lenten Devotions For Christians, the season of Lent is marked by deep reflection on the appearance of the Savior and, naturally, what His life, suffering, death, and resurrection man for our lives now. God s human involvement in our world is a perfect example of His intimate love for us. He spared nothing to make Himself known to us - a fact that proclaims in no uncertain terms how God so loved the world. In Silent Witnesses, readers will note both the majestic - the mundane - aspects of the Gospel accounts: stories telling how God in His infinite power came down and has spoken to us by His Son. Please invite a friend to experience this devotional with you. Copies are available on the back window ledge in the sanctuary.
