3 The Legacy of Martin Luther For years Martin Luther had labored seeking to earn God s favor. - He had kept the law. - He had prayed. - He had meditated. - He had preached. - He had taught. He had fasted and done countless acts of devotion. He walked from Nuremburg to Rome where he climbed the same steps Christ had ascended to the palace of Pontius Pilate in order to free his loved ones from purgatory. Still peace in his soul eluded him. What changed? What transformed Luther, the pious monk, into Luther, the Reformer? The same thing that transforms us; the Word of God. How important is this treasure that God has given us! How we cheat ourselves when we neglect this great gift! The weight of the Law is lifted from us, as it was for Luther, when we read Ephesians 2:8-9: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Somehow many miss this truth. Although they have been brought up in the church, have read and studied their Bibles almost daily, the Gospel has eluded them. They strive, as did Luther, to appease God, our judge; they work to earn the favor of the One Who sits enthroned above. They live by the Law, burdened with the guilt of sin they can never rid themselves of. Let us pray for those who labor under this load that they may hear the freeing words. For by grace you have been saved through faith. Then having been freed from the constraints of the Law, we can view ourselves as God s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10). We are saved by grace, and we are empowered by grace to give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because [we] know that [our] labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). 4 Celebrating the Reformation Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, October is here! Leaves are falling, pumpkins are on sale, some have decorated their yards for Halloween, everything pumpkin spice is back in season (Lauren is excited), and Trinity is even th kicking off this month with a church wiener roast on October 6! Lauren and I said goodbye to the summer by taking one last paddle boat ride on the lagoon before the boat rental closes for the fall (we got the dragon boat!). Even though the summer temperatures keep making an appearance, we re looking forward to the fall season and fall weather. October is an important month for another reason, though, especially for Lutheran congregations, like Trinity. Not only do we celebrate the fall season with hot dogs and bonfires, but we also give thanks for an important event in the life of the church the Lutheran st Reformation. This year is an especially celebratory year because this October 31 marks the 500 year anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation! (If you aren t familiar with the Lutheran Reformation, or Martin Luther, then check out the new PBS film, Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World, at Alternatively, our church bulletin board has information about a Martin Luther musical entitled Martin Luther, A Beggar Before God that will be presented by Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Peoria. You can also just ask your pastor!) When we hear the words Lutheran Reformation, our initial thoughts might include some keywords and key people, such as Martin Luther, Pope Leo X, the 95 Theses, the Diet of Worms, and Luther s famous Here I stand speech. Like any other movement in history, however, the Lutheran Reformation is larger and more complicated than a few important events that occurred from 1517 onwards. Events like Luther s posting of the 95 Theses and his stand at the Diet of Worms are probably well-known for many reasons. Perhaps these events appeal the most to us because they display Luther s heroic and determined battle to rescue the Gospel message from the false teachings and practices in the church of his day they excite us! No doubt these events are memorable and important. Nevertheless, I want to focus on another side of Luther and his role in the Reformation. In the summer of 1527, a decade after Luther posted the 95 Theses on the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Luther and other reformers performed a series of pastoral visitations to the churches in Saxony (eastern Germany). The purpose of these visitations was simply to improve preaching and teaching in local churches so that the Gospel message of Jesus Christ would have free reign in the lives of the people in the congregations. What Luther found, however, deeply troubled him. Dear God, what misery I beheld, he writes, The ordinary person, especially in the villages, knows absolutely nothing about the Christian faith, and unfortunately many pastors 1 are completely unskilled and incompetent teachers. 1 Kolb, Robert, and Timothy J. Wengert, eds. The Book of Concord: The Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2000, 347. th

5 Luther wanted people to know of God s free grace in Jesus Christ, but the Gospel wasn t getting out to the people! Luther s concern over the poor education of laity and clergy alike drove him to write two handbooks for Christian life: the Small and Large Catechisms. You might be familiar with the Small Catechism as the little blue book that you studied before your Confirmation Day (the newest version of Luther s Small Catechism is maroon). Eventually these catechisms came to be called the layperson s Bible because they are summaries of God s Word for the lives of God s people. In these catechisms, or instruction handbooks, Luther includes the basic fundamentals of the Christian faith. Far from being mere lists and explanations of doctrine, however, Luther s catechisms are meant to inform and shape one s everyday Christian life. Luther believed that the Christian could never stop hearing the message that Jesus Christ has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil in order that I may be his own and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and 2 blessedness The catechism was meant to create an environment where the daily hearing of the Gospel is possible. It was also meant to lead people into hearing the Scriptures. Sometimes we take for granted the accessibility of God s Word. We have five or more Bibles at home. We have the Bible on our smartphones. We can access the Bible on the Internet. In Luther s day, this kind of access to God s Word was unheard of. People didn t own their own Bibles. Luther s goal in writing his Small Catechism was to bring God s Word to the common people. He wanted families, like yours and mine, to receive from God every day, to be fed and nourished by God s Word, and to live as God s children under the good news of Jesus Christ! So how might we go about celebrating and honoring the Lutheran Reformation? Maybe your celebration could involve dusting off and cracking open that little catechism and letting it be a part of your daily routine! Let it guide you in knowing God s will for life and in confessing your sins. Let it preach to you the graciousness of God and the forgiveness of your sins in Jesus Christ. Let it enrich your prayer life as you seek God s help in living the Christian life. Let it remind you of your identity as a baptized child of God. Let it lead you into confession and into receiving Christ s true body and blood at Trinity on Sunday mornings. In other words, let God bless your life through this little book! The Lutheran Reformation isn t primarily about German heritage, or even Martin Luther. It s about opening the Kingdom of Heaven to all people. It s about an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people (Revelation 14:6). It s about letting the Gospel be heard in the world, in the church, and in our homes. It s about Jesus. I pray that this fall would be a time in which God will reinvigorate your study of His Word and your hearing of the eternal Gospel of Jesus. As your pastor, I am here to equip and encourage you and your family in whatever way I can! In Christ Jesus, Pastor Simeon Raddatz 2 nd Ibid., 355; from Luther s explanation to the 2 article of the Apostles Creed in the Small Catechism.
