The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, You know that we are surrounded by many dangers and that we often stumble and fall. Strengthen us in body and mind, and bring us safely through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 10 THE EPISTLE 1 CORINTHIANS 12:27 13:13 27 You are the body of Christ, and individually you are members of it. 28 And God appointed in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then miracles, healing gifts, helpful acts, leadership abilities, kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all miracle workers? 30 Do all have healing gifts? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But eagerly seek the greater gifts. And now, I am going to show you a more excellent way. 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and know all the mysteries and have all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away everything I own, and if I give up my body that I may be burned but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not envy. It does not brag. It is not arrogant. 5 It does not behave indecently. It is not selfish. It is not irritable. It does not keep a record of wrongs. 6 It does not rejoice over unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never comes to an end. But if there are prophetic gifts, they will be done away with; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be done away with. 9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part, 10 but when that which is complete has come, that which is partial will be done away with. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 Now we see indirectly using a mirror, but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I was fully known. 13 So now these three remain: faith, hope, and love and the greatest of these is love. THE VERSE OF THE DAY P: Alleluia. 11 THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany is written in the 4 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the 20 th verse. THE GOSPEL LUKE 4: He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began to tell them, Today, this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. 22 They all spoke well of him and were impressed by the words of grace that came from his mouth. And they kept saying, Isn t this Joseph s son? 23 He told them, Certainly you will quote this proverb to me, Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown everything we heard you did in Capernaum. 24 And he said, Amen I tell you: No prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 But truly I tell you: There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months, while a great famine came over all the land. 26 Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow of Zarephath, in Sidon. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian. 28 All those who were in the synagogue were filled with rage when they heard these things. 29 They got up and drove him out of the town. They led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he passed through the middle of them and went on his way. 31 He went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath. 32 They were amazed by his teaching, because his message had authority. 11

THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. 14 THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary s son, in the fullness of time you came into our world to save us from sin and death: C: You ushered in the day of grace so long foretold. P: Beloved Son of the Father, revered by the Magi, baptized by John, you came preaching and teaching, healing and comforting, forgiving and encouraging: 14

15 C: You brought the light of life to those walking in darkness, and the joy of salvation to those doomed to death. P: Prince of Peace, shine like a beacon for us and the people of our world. Let the good news of salvation be heard in the remotest corners of the earth. Open our own lips to speak your name to those around us who still live without faith or hope: C: Arouse us and our missionaries to flood the world with the light of your gospel. P: Lord of the Church, let your peace rule our hearts that we may use our gifts to serve you and each other in willing gratitude and joy. Watch over our loved ones near and far, that they may remember your love and rejoice in your salvation. Strengthen the faith of the sick and the disheartened. Give hope to those in despair and comfort those who mourn: C: Be gracious to all and lead us to reflect your love in everything we say and do. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. P: Finally, bring us and all your believers to the heavenly home where we will stand in the full light of your glory and with all your saints and angels sing the everlasting song of triumph. C: Amen. English Language Help We are looking for an individual who would be willing to read with one of our Sudanese members to help improve their English. Group Leader for Group #5 The chief responsibilities include contacting members of group #5 to serve and/or bring food when their group is up to serve, as well as, ensure that things follow smoothly during the event. You do not need to be a current member of Group #5 to lead this group. Adult Leader for Lutheran Pioneers The primary responsibilities include planning monthly Pioneer events as well as co-leading them. Volunteer Needed for Transportation We are in need of a volunteer to help regularly drive some of our Sudanese members to church on Sunday. Thurs., Feb. 21 at 7PM New Ulm artist and BLC art instructor Jason Jaspersen speaks about his work, with a reception to follow. The show "Carriers", displaying ceramic sculpture created during Jason Jasperson's residency at The Saint John's Pottery Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Program, will be on display February 14 - March 24. Free and open to the public. The Mankato chapter of the Bethany Auxiliary will meet on Tuesday, February 12 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of Meyer Hall, room 130. Featured speaker for the evening will be Dr. Doyle Holbird whose presentation is entitled "Medical Ethics at the End of Life." Dr. Holbird teaches biology and biochemistry at Bethany and is also an ordained Lutheran pastor. As such, he brings knowledge of both the medical and spiritual issues surrounding the end of life. Anyone who is interested is invited and encouraged to attend. Following Dr. Holbird's presentation members of the auxiliary will conduct their regular business meeting. 19

20 Moms supporting Moms in raising godly children Moms On a Mission Spring Schedule: The Peace/Mt. Olive Moms On a Mission (M.O.M.s) bible study will resume in February and will meet through the month of April. Morning and evening groups will be studying different curriculums this session. Please see the table below for specifics. New and returning mothers, please register by ing the appropriate contact so we can have materials prepared for you! New mothers welcome to join any study at any time. Morning M.O.M.s Study: When: Thursdays, 8:30-10am (can drop children off in childcare at 8:15), beginning Feb. 7 Where: Peace Lutheran Church, North Mankato Study: Morning study will resume its study of the book, Boundaries, by Cloud and Townsend. Pastor Hartwig will join at the end of the study each week to provide biblical principles, answer questions, and give encouragement.
