The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Almighty God, You sent Your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and our ears to hear. Help us believe what the Scriptures proclaim about Him and do the things that are pleasing in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. 3 The Divine Service with Holy Communion Rite 1, p. 41 Opening Prayer P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ s sake. Amen. Hymn #214, Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken The Confession of Sin P: Let us confess our sins to God and pray: We poor sinners confess to You, O God, not only that we have been conceived and born in sin, but also that throughout life we have often and in many ways offended You, our Lord and Maker, in thought, word and deed, so that You could with perfect justice reject and condemn us for all eternity. Therefore we come before You with sorrow of heart, in dread and terror of Your holy justice and of everlasting death. Our sins are a grievous foe, which we should hate in every way as long as we live. O merciful God, You still grant us in this hour to be reminded of Your fatherly goodness. According to the promise of Your Word we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy and implore You, dearest Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your onlybegotten Son, our Brother, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised again for our justification: Forgive us all our sins through faith, which the Holy Spirit increases in our hearts to full assurance. 7 The Lesson Isaiah 58:5-9 5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? 6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. The Epistle 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power. The Holy Gospel Matthew 5:13-20 P: The Holy Gospel for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany is written in the 5 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the 13 th verse. 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it 7

8 gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. The Creed P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. 8

Hymn #194, Lift High the Cross The Sermon Matthew 5:13-20 You are Salt and Light P: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus unto everlasting life. Amen. The Prayer of the Church P: Everlasting and merciful God, we beseech You in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: C: To have mercy upon us and to hear our prayer. P: Look in mercy upon Your Church. Protect it and sanctify it by Your truth. May Your Word be taught in its purity and Your Sacraments be rightly administered. Grant 9

10 unto Your Church faithful pastors who shall declare Your truth with power and shall live according to Your will. Send forth laborers into Your harvest and open the door of faith unto all unbelievers and unto the people of Israel. In mercy remember the enemies of Your Church and grant to them repentance unto life. C: O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, hear us in the truth of Your salvation. P: Let Your protecting hand be over our country and over all who travel. Prosper what is good among us and bring to naught every evil counsel and purpose. Protect and bless Your servants, the President of the United States, the Governor of this state, our judges and magistrates and all in authority. Fit them for their high calling by the gift of Your Spirit of wisdom and fear, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. C: Hear, O Lord, and have mercy! Lord be our helper. P: According to Your promise, O God, be the defender of the widow and the father of the orphan. Relieve and comfort the sick and the sorrowful (especially our brother/sister who is ill/grieving). Graciously help those who are assaulted by the devil and who are in peril of death. Be the strength of those who are suffering for the sake of Christ s holy name. Grant that we may live together in peace and prosperity. Bestow upon us good and seasonable weather; and bless us with upright Christian counsel in all that we undertake. C: O Lord, be with all in trouble. Hear their prayers to the honor of Your Name. P: We especially commend to Your care and keeping this Your congregation which You have bought with a great price. Keep from us all offenses and bind us together in the unity of Your holy love. Grant that the little ones who are baptized in Your name may be brought up in Your fear. At Your table give to those who there commune with You peace and life everlasting. C: Let all rejoice who trust in You; let them shout for joy because You defend them. P: Be merciful, O God, to all, according to Your great love in Christ Jesus, our Lord. When our final hour shall come, grant us a blessed departure from this world, and on the last day, a resurrection to Your glory. C: Amen. Grant us Your peace, O Lord! 11 The Offering The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Adult Bible Study topic: Love & Respect, will be on Sunday mornings at 9:45am and, if you miss that one, it will be repeated on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm. SUNDAY SCHOOL FAMILIES - A reminder to Sunday School families that the children will be singing for the 10:45AM service on Sunday, Feb. 16. The song will be at the very beginning of the service. Also, the children will practice in the sanctuary between services on Feb. 16. Parents are asked to ensure that their Sunday School-age children are in the sanctuary by 9:40AM that day, which may mean bypassing the treat table for the time being. Thanks for your cooperation! The Council has called a Voters Meeting for February 23 rd at Noon to address the following motions: A motion is made to recommend to the congregation that we DO NOT get a vicar for the year. MMSP Reasons are cost in the near term, financial planning over the longer term. A motion is made to recommend to the congregation that we plan to support a vicar for the year. MMSP Men, please plan to attend. PIANO AUCTION - The purchase of our new sanctuary piano last fall left Peace Lutheran with an extra piano, which is now being offered for sale through silent auction. Anyone interested in purchasing the piano is invited to participate. There is a clipboard and bid sheet on the piano. Write your name and phone number and your bid. Bid/re-bid until auction closes. The bid deadline is February 12, 2014, at 7:30 PM. The piano will be sold to the highest bidder, who then will be responsible to take possession of the piano within a reasonable amount of time. 18 Last week at Peace: Divine Worship 338 Bethany Events Negro Spirituals / Ella Sheppard, a "live history" performance by Joanna Maddox on Monday, February 10, 7:00-8:00pm in the YFAC Theater. Ella Sheppard was a former slave and founding member of the Fisk University Jubilee singers, the first group to sing publicly the songs of their ancestors: Negro Spirituals. The Jubilee Singers traveled throughout the South, the Northeast and Europe sharing the sacred music of their parents, touching the heart and soul of a nation, and preserving Negro Spirituals for generations to come. Actress and singer Joanna Maddox portrays Ella Sheppard. Suitable for grade 3 - adult. Free. The Mankato chapter of the Bethany Auxiliary will meet on Tuesday, February 11 at 7 p.m. in the lower level of Meyer Hall. Dr. Jen Wosmek will present "BLC students go to China: The China Study Tour 2013/2014." Dr. Wosmek will trace her journey from disinterest to fascination with Chinese culture. This journey culminated in the recent study tour offered to Bethany students over Christmas break. Dr. Wosmek will describe the importance of crosscultural education within the field of psychology, and how study abroad experiences enhance students' understanding of self and other. Anyone interested in the Bethany campus is welcome to attend the presentation portion of the evening. Valentine s Day Babysitting is Back!!! - The Bethany Vikings women's soccer team will be doing their 7th annual Valentine's Day Babysitting on Fri. Feb. 14th from 5-10:30pm.
