1 Seymour United Methodist Church Paul Seay, Pastor January 2018 Words from Pastor Paul... Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, New Director of Youth Ministries The wait is over. We can officially say that we have a new youth director. His name is David Gornto. Our search committee and Staff-Parish Relations Committee have been very impressed with David s passion for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for ministry with youth. David and his family live in Alcoa, where he is a science teacher at Alcoa Middle School. His wife teaches marketing at Alcoa High School. They have a son in college at the University of Tennessee and another son who is a freshman at Alcoa High School. In addition to teaching in public schools, David has a background in sports ministry and coaching as well as several years of leadership in youth ministry. We believe that he will bring well-organized, grounded, and enthusiastic leadership to our youth program. David will begin his ministry with us on January 1. On his first Sunday, January 7, we will host a meet-and-greet for him and his family in the breakfast table room. He will attend Resurrection with our group. Please join me in praying for the Gornto family as they come to be in ministry with us. Looking ahead to 2018 This is an exciting time in the life of our church. God is doing new things, as is always God's way. We have had a beautiful Advent and Christmas season, the highlight of which was Christmas Eve. Seymour United Methodist spent nearly the whole day in worship on December 24. We began with a combined service at 10:00 and two wonderful evening services with Communion and candlelight. I hope that 2018 can be a lot like Christmas Eve: filled with worship. As a church we have been through a lot together in 2017, and we have been blessed to find God with us in our joys and our tears. God is faithful, and God is good. Jesus has promised that he will be with us in the breaking of bread, in the proclamation of the word, and in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. My family and I are so thankful to be here and to join you in ministry. May God continue to bless and keep you. Peace, Paul Seay

Thank you for your support with Breakfast with Santa! It's time to start our 2018 collection year for Operation Christmas Child! This year we will be collecting for older children in an effort to help Samaritans Purse reach a group of young people they do not get enough boxes for. We will focus on boys and girls ages Our 2018 goal is 190 shoeboxes! A growth increase of 15 shoeboxes. Once again our January collection will be winter gloves and hats. 5 Young Adults..... December was extremely busy with the kick-off of the Rise Against Hunger Campaign. THANK YOU to all that have supported us by your prayers, donations, flamingo orders, and the gift cards. We are nearly at the half way point of our goal to raising enough money to prepare 21,000 meals. We would like to challenge you to commit to saving $1 per day per person during the month of January. Your $31 gifts will add up quickly to help us reach our goal. The flamingos had a little break over the holidays and are ready to start traveling again. Order forms are in the hallway. Thanks again for your support. The flamingos spent Christmas week at Pastor Paul s house!! To our dear SUMC family; We would like to thank all of our church family for your support. We greatly appreciate your prayers, your kind shoulder to cry upon, your kind words, the food that you prepared, and your most gracious cards, letters and visits during our mother s illness and eventual passing. We thank you and love you with all of our hearts. Your kindness and love will always be remembered and cherished. Rev. Steve Pross and family Page 5

6 Another Year of Challenge THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR ANGELS!!! Thanks to all of our angels who purchased gifts or donated money for the angel tree, we were able to give 30 children in the Seymour area a merrier Christmas! This brand new year s just started, But, so suddenly, they re through; Last year has quickly passed us by; As GOD S hands, what DID we DO? One more year... quickly upon us, Looking back... they fly by fast; Don t let another come and go, Since each day could be our last! We ALL should strive to do our best; Improving.... EVERY day; Seeking out those higher callings, Which The SPIRIT sends our way! We ALL could do a better job, Of reflecting JESUS light; As Christians, we are duty bound, To help, make wrong things right! Thank you for shopping at Kroger AND for linking your Kroger Plus card to Seymour United Methodist Church. Between September 1 November 30 the church earned $ from your purchases. You can register your Plus card online at krogercommunityrewards.com. Remember.... It s ALL for GOD! NOT you and I!.... Please hear! May GOD S words guide our footsteps, Throughout this coming year! Accept this challenge, this New Year, With vows to see them through; May GOD our strength and leader be, In things WE rightly DO! As always, I ask God s blessings upon you and yours, for this entire New Year and beyond. May we all take time, regularly, to thank and praise God for those many blessings He so freely gives us on a minute-byminute basis. 12/14/17 By Dave Manners Out to Lunch Book Club January Book Is Read More on your list of things you d like to do this year?
