1 The Sunday Good News The Church of Saint John Bosco June 4, 2017 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly Brothers and sisters No one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. There are different forms of service, but the same Lord. There are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. On this great day we recall a new life given to the apostles and the church, we see the signs of tongues of fire, hear the noise and feel the wind which accompanied the Spirit. That same Spirit has directed the church through twenty centuries with great blessings, trying difficulties, but always manifesting an abiding presence. How true that is for us today. A Prayer To the Holy Spirit Breathe in me That my thoughts May all be holy; I ask what are the gifts present and needed by the church today. I wonder about the service which the church can provide to our needy world. I look to observe the Spirit at work among us. Yes, the words of Paul are manifest today. But I also must ask what am I doing to use the gifts I have received, or what service can I provide, or what work needs to be done, and If I don t do it, it will always remain undone. I ask that the Spirit of Pentecost will awaken me. POPE FRANCIS QUOTES TO LIVE OUT 2017 This column features quotes from the 2016 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to help you to grow in holiness and live out love and mercy in 2017! Act in me That my works, too, May be holy; Clearly, creation itself is a sign of God s boundless love for us. Consequently, the gifts of nature can themselves lead us to contemplate God.... All of us, and we Christians in particular, are responsible for protecting creation. (10/31/16, Sweden) ~ Pope Francis Draw my heart That I love But what is holy; Just a reminder. 4 PAGE 4 From the Pastor s Laptop... June 3-4, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends, This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, commonly referred to as The Birthday of the Church. Along with Easter, Pentecost is one of the greatest Feasts of the liturgical year for all Christians. The Christian term "Pentecost" simply means "fiftieth" in the Greek language and is considered the conclusion of the Easter season. The traditional color of Pentecost in the Roman Catholic Church is red. The red symbolizes the tongues of fire that descended upon the Apostles, Mary and the early followers of Jesus who were gathered in the Upper Room. It gave them empowerment from God to proclaim the Gospel throughout the world. It is a symbol of excitement, passion, heat and zeal and reminds us of the excitement for mission that we should embrace. The red decorations, linens, vestments and flowers that adorn our sanctuary this weekend remind us of the Holy Spirit who was sent as tongues of fire on the Apostles 50 days after Easter to strengthen them to boldly proclaim the Good News to the world. On this day the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit was given to the early Church to guide and sustain us and to give us the wisdom and courage to continue the work of the Father. The difference that Pentecost should make in our lives is that on this same day the promised Gift of the Holy Spirit is poured out on each of us. I believe that The PASTOR S PAGE The Sunday Good News it is that force, the Holy Spirit, which has powered the Church throughout the past two thousand years, kept it going, fed us, and strengthened us. It is the power of the Spirit that will continue to guide and lead the Church today and in the future. While there are other references to Pentecost in the New Testament (e.g. 1 Cor 16:8), it is most significant in Acts 2 and the familiar scene of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on those in the "upper room." The New Testament writers associate the events of Acts 2 with Pentecost, and relate it to the prophecies of Joel 2 and the promises of Jesus (Acts 1:8). In both, the emphasis is on an empowerment through the Holy Spirit to enable the people of God to witness to Jesus Christ. May we be open to the power of the Spirit to lead and guide us, the Church, the family of Jesus in our day. May you have a holy and faith-filled Pentecost. Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit may we be recommitted to witness to God s love and fulfill our parish mission statement: called to bring others to Christ, and in doing so are brought to Christ before everyone whom we meet today and during the summer season. Please be assured of my prayers and masses for all of you while I am on my annual priest retreat at The Trappist Abbey of Gethsemane in Kentucky. Please remember me in your prayers too. Please obey this regulation for the welfare of all who participate at Masses and to avoid costly fines. This is out of parish control and you would be responsible. SUMMER MASS There is no VACATION from our Christian VOCATION! When you go on vacation in the summer, do you take a vacation from Mass? Do you make the days of summer lazy by staying home on Sunday? Here are four reasons to include Mass into your summer schedule: After Jesus resurrection, his followers formed the early Church by gathering and keeping his message alive. Every time you attend Mass, you help to keep Jesus message alive but that can only happen in church. At Sunday Mass, millions of people you don t know are praying for you and with you. Where else can you get that kind of help? Attending Mass connects you to the Communion of Saints the saints in heaven, the souls in purgatory, and believers on earth. That s powerful company! Mass is the way a Catholic fulfills the commandment to keep holy the Sabbath day. If God tells you to do something, it s a good idea to do it. Information on Mass times can be obtained on the internet: Going on vacation should not mean taking a vacation from God!
