1 The Church of Saint John Bosco September 10, 2017 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly Amen, amen I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them How wonderful when we find several people gathered in prayer. It may be before a statue or shrine, at table in a family home, or before the Blessed Sacrament. Maybe beads pass through gnarled fingers, hands raised in praise, or a simple profound bow, people turning to a loving God. His grace and their faith allow this stirring moment to happen. PRAYER BEFORE A CRUCIFIX (Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is September 14) Behold, O kind and gentle Jesus, I kneel before You and pray that You would impress upon my heart the virtues of faith, hope and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment. At the same time, with sorrow I meditate on Your five precious wounds having in mind the words which David spoke in prophecy, They have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones. Amen. Our prayer may be for our personal needs, may be prayer of intercession for someone who is ill or in difficult circumstances, or an expression of deep gratitude for favors granted. On each occasion may we acknowledge the words of the gospel that the Lord is truly present in such gatherings. He invites us to prayer, we invite Him to participate with us. POPE FRANCIS QUOTES TO LIVE OUT 2017 This column features quotes from the 2016 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to help you to grow in holiness and live out love and mercy in 2017! Following Jesus is a serious task, and, at the same time, one filled with joy; it takes a certain daring and courage to recognize the divine Master in the poorest of the poor and those who are cast aside, and to give oneself in their service. DIOCESAN COLLECTION TO AID STORM VICTIMS Hurricane Harvey is a catastrophic weather event that has caused enormous damage in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. Twelve million people thus far have been affected. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has requested that each diocese participate in an emergency collection to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This special second collection will occur in the Diocese of Scranton this weekend, September 9 and 10. This emergency collection will be used both to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA, and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses through the USCCB. This storm of historic proportions has caused great hardship for so many people, said Bishop Joseph C. Bambera. I ask all of us to offer prayers and support as we accompany our sisters and brothers on their long and difficult road to recovery. 3 Walk Together in the Light of Christ Since our earliest days we have been taught how to pray by the words that Jesus himself shared with us in the scriptures. He began that prayer by saying Our Father. We walk together as brothers and sisters in the light of Christ by the very nature of our faith. In his great instruction to us, Evangelii Gaudum (The Joy of the Gospel), Pope Francis invites us all to missionary discipleship as authentic followers of the Lord Jesus. Missionary discipleship calls us to go out of ourselves and to preach the Gospel and to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters with whom we walk. - Bishop Joseph C. Bambera Our Holy Father tells us, God s heart has a special place for the poor, so much so that he himself 'became poor.' He explains that the proclamation of the Gospel is itself the prime form of charity. You are invited to join with parishioners across the Diocese as they Walk Together in the Light of Christ proclaiming the Gospel by supporting the many ministries and services made possible through gifts to the 2017 Annual Appeal throughout the 11 counties of our Diocese. 4 PAGE 4 From the Pastor s Laptop... Current participants contacted by their group facilitator to confirm participation. This local Labor dispute pitted coal company owners, the sheriff of Luzerne County and his armed posse against the non-violent unarmed striking anthracite coal miners. Nineteen miners died and over 50 were wounded in the melee, mostly southern European immigrants, who were being discriminated against and horribly exploited. They were all shot in their back. This Massacre was a turning point in the history of the United Mine Workers of America. I encourage you to participate this Sunday afternoon, September 10th, in some or part of this memorial program. It is an opportunity to recall the suffering and injustice that many of our immigrant forbearers had to endure and to consider the refugee and immigrant issues that our country is facing in our time. Father Ric Polmounter Pastor GRANDPARENTS DAY, September 10 We extend our prayerful best wishes to all of our Grandparents on this special weekend. May the Lord continue to bless you and your role in influencing the next generation. Happy Grandparents Day! A Grandparents Prayer God, you have blessed me indeed as the child I love has had a child I love with all that is within me. I pray that in your mercy you watch over and protect my grandchildren as you have always done for me. May their lives be long and healthy. May they have the courage to follow their dreams and should the day come when I am no longer on Earth with them, may they look back upon me with fond memories and may they never forget that they were and always will be deeply loved by me. PARISH CONTRIBUTION ENVELOPES After reviewing the parish fiscal year , and preparing the reports for the Diocesan Finance Office, it has come to our attention that only one-third of our parish families are using their church contribution envelopes consistently and another onethird sporadically. One-third have not used them at all. The cost of these unused envelope mailings is an unnecessary expense for our parish and could be used to support our parish education, youth, and outreach programs. Beginning in January 2018, in the interest of good stewardship, those who have not used their church collection envelopes at all since July 1, 2016 to the present will no longer have church envelopes mailed to them.
