1 The Sunday Good News The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ The Church of Saint John Bosco June 18, 2017 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. A MAN S PRAYER Jesus, my Lord and Savior; I don t pray as often as I ought. but I trust you know my heart. Forgive me for the times I have not been a dutiful son, obeying the commandments, and making my life a sacrifice in tribute to your sacrifice on Calvary to forgive my sins. I need your powerful graces, O Lord, to live for you alone through my dedication to serve my family and friends, and my Church. watch over all those who are important to me. Help me shed what is unworthy in me that my heart and soul may ever increasingly absorb your goodness. Give me not riches but a discerning heart to do always that which is good despite the cost to me. Help me Lord to be a Christian servant to others, to lead them where I want to go and be, Your kingdom promised to all who acknowledge You to be Lord, forever and ever. Amen Bishop Joseph N. Perry The simple questions St. Paul asked his Christian community at Corinth are directed to us on this great day for our Catholic community. The danger of routinely approaching the altar and receiving the Eucharist is shaken as we read his important questions. People wait hours to catch a glimpse of a hero, a star or idol. Many thousands gather in St. Peter s square weekly to see the Holy Father, hear his message and receive his blessing. But every time we meet for mass, Jesus is present in the gift of the Eucharist. He is present for adoration in the tabernacle, waiting for our praise and thanksgiving. Jesus is truly present in this sacrament for He wanted to remain with us, and this is the way He chose to be here. May we be reminded of this great gift of His presence as we enter our church. May we teach our children the need for respect and reverence as we celebrate each mass. POPE FRANCIS QUOTES TO LIVE OUT 2017 This column features quotes from the 2016 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to help you to grow in holiness and live out love and mercy in 2017! Genuine love... is demanding. But its beauty lies precisely in the demands it makes. Only those able to make demands on themselves in the name of love can then demand love from others. ~ Pope Francis SOLEMNITY OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) is celebrated on Sunday, June This feast is a great occasion to emphasize Christ s Real Presence in the Eucharist. Ever wish you could afford the time and money for such a spiritual adventure? In May, Pope Frances made a pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Marian apparitions along with tens of thousands of pilgrims. Bishop Bambera is leading a 9-day Fatima Jubilee and Shrines of Spain and Portugal Pilgrimage in September. Many people go on pilgrimages with the hope of coming home to the self. It s giving ourselves the space and means to rearrange the furniture of life to make way for its essence. It s living the second half of life from the inside out rather than from the outside in. Many discover that everything in your life fits and has meaning. To go on pilgrimage, even via film, can invite you the viewer to cross a spiritual threshold, a doorway into grace, perhaps a turning point in your own call to ongoing conversion. There is potential for a clearer vision and newness of life. Consider joining us Saturday morning July 8th from 10:15 sharp to 12:30 pm for a powerful and inspirational story of 4 pilgrims who separately choose to walk this 450 mile ancient route, The Camino de Santiago. Their trek begins in the French Pyrenees and ends at the tomb of St. James the Apostle in northwestern Spain. For the first time ever the film crew was allowed inside the 800 year old cathedral to film an actual service for pilgrims. Call Sr. Marilyn ASAP if you would like to attend at ext. 5 to reserve your seat. Showing in all-purpose room (next to gym). Leave your name and phone #. It s optional but you can bring your own brown bag lunch and eat it during the film.

4 PAGE 4 From the Pastor s Laptop... June 17/18, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Friends, It is so easy these days to lose sight of our goals in life. If you are starting college, there is the question of affordability. If you are finishing college, it is the reality of sizable debt or payback of college student loans. The PASTOR S PAGE Looking further into the future, there are matrimonial questions galore: Will I be a committed spouse? Will I be a concerned and conscientious parent to my children? Or a much more serious question do I God bless you! want children? These and many more questions plague our younger generation as they look to their Fr. Ric, future. Past generations have equally engaged in Pastor The Sunday Good News worries and anxieties about their future. Perhaps their worries were not the same as ours but certainly as serious. Worry can tend to cloud our ability to stay focused whether it is studying for a test or planning our future. Our parents shared in some of the very same concerns we have and somehow they turned out just fine. So pursue your dreams and do not be afraid of the future. After all it s your future and your plans. Somehow, in the end, it all works out no matter how much we worry. Stay focused and forge ahead. God has a plan for all of us. All we have to do is embrace it and trust in it. Keep your eye on the ultimate goal! Happy Father s Day! Blessed is the father Whose faith shines for his children to see, Whose love brings his family together, And whose wisdom draws his family Closer to God. BRINGING UP FATHER When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years! ~ Mark Twain Spirit of the Living God rise afresh in us. We rejoice in Your mercy received and now given as we pass it forward Dear Parish Family, Our April 23 rd parish bulletin introduced us to the new name and logo change of Stop Hunger Now to Rise Against Hunger. We were also urged to mark our calendars for August 12, :30 a.m. to noon as we once again will join in the fun and challenge of packaging 10,000 meals in less than 120 minutes. Our assembly process combined rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a packet of 23 vitamins and minerals into small meal packages in under record time. Future info on sign-up will be forthcoming. Raising the $3,000 to pay for the meal ingredients will happen through two second weekend collections in July: July 8/9 and 15/16. Donations can be given to parish office at any time. Jo Robbins and Peggy McAndrews have generously volunteered to be our co-chairs as we once again Make Mercy Real. Christ s Mercy received and given, Sister Marilyn

Colossians 3:17 Location: St. John Bosco Gym, Conyngham. Register online at QUO VADIS DAYS 2017 Quo Vadis Days 2017 will be held June at Misericordia University, Dallas. This camp is for young Catholic men in High School (9-12 th grade) to deepen their faith, learn more about all vocations, and better discern God s call in their lives. The camp will feature dynamic talks, prayer, games, sports, activities, music and more. Participants will have the opportunity to meet priests and seminarians of the Diocese of Scranton. All participants are required to get a letter of recommendation from a priest, deacon, parish life coordinator, director of religious education, or youth minister to register. Online registration is now open at For more information, call (570) PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS At the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the gifts - the bread and wine which will become Christ s Body and Blood, and the offertory collection that has been collected, are brought to the altar. The preparation of the gifts is a simple and functional rite. Its function is essential to a beautiful celebration of the Eucharist. There is a beauty in its very simplicity. We hope that all members of our parish community will consider carrying up the gifts of the faithful at least once a year. To serve one another as Christ has shown us be example is the greatest gift we can offer. Please see the Mass Coordinator at least 10 minutes before Mass begins if you would like to participate at Mass PARISH TRIP Remote plans are being discussed for a trip to THE PASSION PLAY in Oberammergau. This play is held every 10 years in this tiny Bavarian Village since 1633 in response to a promise that they made to God to be spared from the Bubonic Plague. In addition to the play, other countries will be visited. It will extend between days and will include meals, transportation, lodging, and will be fully escorted. If you might be interested, please give your name and contact information to the parish office at (570) , ext. 3. You will be contacted first, later this year, when an itinerary is finalized and prices determined to find out if you are still interested. No commitment at this time - just determining interest. Open to the public. You have three years to make plans and to save up for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I sponsored a parish trip in 2010 and it was a huge success. The participants loved it. LOW-GLUTEN HOSTS: For those with celiac disease, St. John Bosco Parish has available Low Gluten Hosts that are approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Please contact Deacon Maurice ten minutes prior to Mass if you desire to receive a consecrated low-gluten host at Mass. There is no such thing as a Gluten Free Wafer that is approved for Catholic Mass. A trace of wheat, 0.01%, is required to be valid matter. If the Deacon is not available, please contact the Mass Coordinator (Sacristan). Those receiving this host must receive it from Deacon Maurice near the choir side of the Church (near the sanctuary) at the beginning of the Rite of Communion. NOTICE REGARDING REPORTING SEXUAL ABUSE OF A MINOR It is the policy of the Diocese of Scranton to report any allegation of sexual abuse of a minor to law enforcement. If you are a victim of sexual abuse committed by a priest, deacon, religious or lay employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Scranton, you are encouraged to immediately report the matter to law enforcement. If any priest, deacon, religious, lay employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Scranton has cause or reason to suspect that a minor has been subjected to any form of abuse, including child sexual abuse, the matter will be reported to law enforcement. 6 PRAYERFUL CONGRATULATIONS BELL CHOIR We extend our prayers and best wishes to David Zandi who will be commissioned as a Special Minister of Holy Communion this Sunday, June 18, during the 7:30 AM Mass. This is especially appropriate since it is the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. Dave completed his training with the Diocese of Scranton, Office of Worship, and a practicum with Fr. Ric here at St. John Bosco. We welcome him to the STJB Extraordinary Ministers and take this opportunity to thank all the men and women who serve in this ministry in our parish and those who take Holy Communion to our homebound and those in care facilities. SAINT JOHN BOSCO BELL CHOIR will participate in the following Masses during the summer months: July 1 - Saturday, 4:00 PM Mass July 23 - Sunday, 7:30 AM Mass August 13 - Sunday, 9:00 AM Mass August 26 - Saturday, 4:00 PM Mass PLANNING YOUR ESTATE THE SCRANTON DIOCESE OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BRING HEALING IN THE AREA OF FAILED MARRIAGES Have you ever considered leaving a part of your estate to our Parish Family Church? There are several options available that you might find attractive from an income, tax savings, retirement or inheritance point of view. To learn more about how these programs might work for you and your family, please contact your financial planner or leave a message at the parish office and we will contact you. When marriages fail, Catholics may be unclear about their relationship to the Church. I am civilly divorced not sure whether I can continue to receive the Eucharist or be a part of the parish community. I am not sure about the status of my marriage. It would be helpful to talk to someone who could explain it to me. My spouse and I would like to explore having our marriage blessed in the Church. I don t know what an annulment really is and why I would want one. Also, I heard they are expensive. Do any of these voices sound like you or someone you know? In the Diocese of Scranton, the annulment process is now more user friendly than you might expect, and there is no longer a processing fee. Please contact Father Ric Polmounter, (570) , ext. 4, or the Diocesan Tribunal Office, (570) , to begin a conversation. It is possible to get clear answers to these questions and to renew your connection with the Church. WEDDING BANNS Robert Minneci and Jocelyn Lamoreaux Wedding, June 24, 2017 Derek A.
