1 The Sunday Good News The Church of Saint John Bosco May 13, 2018 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly WORLD COMMUNICATION DAY IS MAY 13, 2018 POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER FOR COUNTERING "FAKE NEWS" (ADAPTED FROM THE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS) Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Help us to recognize the evil latent in a communication that does not build communion. Help us to remove the venom from our judgments. Help us to speak about others as our brothers and sisters. You are faithful and trustworthy; may our words be seeds of goodness for the world: where there is shouting, let us practice listening; where there is confusion, let us inspire harmony; where there is ambiguity, let us bring clarity; where there is exclusion, let us offer solidarity; where there is sensationalism, let us use sobriety; where there is superficiality, let us raise real questions; where there is prejudice, let us awaken trust; where there is hostility, let us bring respect; where there is falsehood, let us bring truth. Amen. ~Vatican, 24 January 2018 Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day He was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection Then they prayed, You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place. As the early church prayed that the Lord direct the choice of the twelfth apostle, they listed the requirements of time, presence, and witness. The word accompanied is the image so often used by Pope Francis, as we are accompanied by and walk with Jesus. Their prayer should be our prayer, for the Lord knows well our hearts. He continues to choose among our parish families people to fill His ministry. He continues to choose others who will be ordained this month to continue the apostolic ministry. May we pray for those to be ordained, ask the Lord to inspire others to follow and do His work, and find us supporting those who have responded to His call. We too need time, presence, and witness. 4 PAGE 4 From the Pastor s Laptop... May 12-13, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Friends, The PASTOR S PAGE Spring has finally arrived and with it the beautiful celebration of two of the Easter Sacraments, Eucharist and Confirmation. It was a joy to celebrate with our young people as they continue their faith journey and were further initiated into the Church. May they remain close to Jesus and His family, throughout the summer months and become what they have received. Today, Mother s Day, is a time for all of us to prayerfully remember our Mothers and all those who have had a mothering influence in our life. Grandmothers, Godmothers, Confirmation Sponsors, Aunts, Religious Sisters and significant women and friends in our lives. All of the Masses this weekend are for all of our mothers, living and deceased, and those listed on the Mother s Day Remembrances. We wish all of you God s continued blessings for who and what you are to each of us. On this weekend I share with you some brief quotes about Mothers for your reflection: The phrase 'working mother' is redundant. By Jane Sellman An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy. A Spanish Proverb A mother understands what a child does not say. A Jewish proverb Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children. By William M.Thackeray Any mother could perform the jobs of several air-traffic controllers with ease. By Lisa Alther All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. By A. Lincoln It's not easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it. The Golden Girls May is also Mary s Month and we celebrated two May Crownings last weekend. At the 9 am Mass our The Sunday Good News Second Grade First Holy Communion Class honored Mary and at the 11:30 am Mass our Newly Confirmed Eighth Graders participated in the May Crowning. Mary is not only the Mother of Jesus but our Spiritual Mother. She teaches us by word and example how to be a disciple of her Son. Why is May the month of Mary? May is the month in which the earth springs into bloom (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) and we start thinking about planting gardens, family picnics, and making vacation plans. It's also the Month of Mary. It's common for parishes to have a daily recitation of the Rosary during May, and many erect a special May altar with a statue or picture of Mary as a reminder of Mary's month. Additionally, it's a long-standing tradition to crown the statue of Mary during May - a custom known as May Crowning. Often, the crown is made of beautiful blossoms representing Mary's beauty and virtue. It's also a reminder to the faithful to strive to imitate our Blessed Mother's virtue in our own lives. But May altars and crownings aren't just "church" things. We can and should be doing the same in our homes. When we echo the customs and traditions of the Church in our homes - our domestic churches - we participate more fully in the life of the Church. I invite you to think about some special prayer practice you can take on this month to honor our Blessed Mother! Well, Graduations, Weddings and Memorial Day are all quickly approaching. Remember to wear something RED next weekend as we celebrate PENTECOST, the birthday of the Church and the end of the Easter Season. Finally, I want to thank everyone who made my 40 th Anniversary Celebration so special and uplifting, especially the Anniversary Committee, the Choir and Musicians, the sponsors and all who participated in the Mass and/or reception. I also deeply appreciate the kind words, promise of prayers, cards and remembrances. Please be assured of my prayers for each of you too! Have a wonderful Mother s Day weekend, Father Ric
