1 The Sunday Good News The Church of Saint John Bosco November 13, 2016 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly PRAYER FOR OUR VETERANS Dear Lord, Today we honor our veterans, worthy men and women who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them, Lord, for their unselfish service in the continual struggle to preserve our freedoms, our safety, and our country s heritage, for all of us. Bless them abundantly for the hardships they faced, for the sacrifices they made for their many contributions to America s victories over tyranny and oppression. We respect them, we thank them, we honor them, we are proud of them, and we pray that you will watch over them with peace and happiness. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. By Joanna Fuchs You know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you, nor did we eat food received from anyone We wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. In fact, while we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work neither should that one eat. An overused expression these days is role model. It often is cited when someone has failed to give the right example or falls from grace. While we have countless persons who really provide setting a good example, we sometimes fail to use role model to describe them. Paul not only presented himself as a fine example, he invited others to imitate him. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Consider some of our great saints of former times. Francis, Ignatius, Teresa. Consider recently canonized saints as St. Pope John 23 rd, St. John Paul II. Consider Katherine Drexel or Teresa. Each offers some gift to imitate resulting in holiness. Pray to and for those whose causes are being promoted, like Dorothy Day, Oscar Romero. Look in a mirror to see the reflection of a saint in the making. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Suggestions for the Year of Mercy During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, try putting mercy into practice each week. His 30-minute documentary explores four stories of living life to the fullest with compassion, courage, vision, and wonder. 4 PAGE 4 From the Pastor s Laptop... November 12-13, 2016 Dear Parishioners and Friends, This past Friday, November 11, we celebrated Veteran s Day. It was an opportunity to pause in remembrance of those who have proudly served our country in the U.S. military. Originally known as Armistice Day, November 11 was chosen to annually memorialize the cessation of hostilities between the Allied powers and Germany ending World War I, which was then regarded as the war to end all wars. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first commemoration of what would become an official national holiday with the words: To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day are filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations... Individuals and groups who stand up and put their lives on the line to defend the country from very real threats to our national security, as do those in our nation s military, are true patriots. But true patriots are also those who speak out, stand up, and challenge our governmental leaders, those The PASTOR S PAGE The Sunday Good News who put their lives on the line by actively advocating for justice, freedom, and liberty through peaceful means. As we honor our military veterans, and my Father was one from the Greatest Generation, we also remember as well the diplomats and the mediators, those working in conflict resolution and civil and human rights, the activists dedicated to preventing wars and to bringing existing wars to diplomatic resolution once hostilities have begun. Looking over the history of humanity, it is apparent that tyranny, at times, could only be countered through the raising of arms. On numerous occasions, however, diplomacy has been successful, and at other times, it should have been used more extensively before rushing to war. I find it unacceptable when one s patriotism and one s love of country is called into question when one advocates for peaceful means of resolving conflict, for it is also an act of patriotism to work to keep our brave and courageous troops out of harm s way and to work to create conditions and understanding that ultimately make war less likely. As we honor our veterans, let us expand our definition of patriot and veteran while we remember and honor all those serving our country. God Bless You, Father Ric Pastor SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SEASON MEMORIAL CANDLES AVAILABLE ALTAR SANCTUARY CANDLES - 4 extra large Candles available. Offering: $50 each. GIFT CARDS NEEDED Often throughout the year, due to our location on a main highway, we receive requests from needy parishioners, travelers and others from the area for assistance. Our outreach is normally limited to food assistance. We usually give $25 GIFT CARDS to Gould s Supermarket, WalMart or occasionally a gas station. In the past a parishioner who died in the past year was extremely generous in donating many of these certificates. Our Parish St. Vincent DePaul Fund also provides these gift cards. If you would like to donate a gift card that can be given to a needy person or family when there is a real need, simply purchase them and drop them off at the parish office or place them in the collection basket in an envelope marked for the needy. Whatever you can do will be appreciated. INITIATION INTO THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH The following youngsters, who were baptized in non-catholic churches, were received into the Roman Catholic Church by Father Richard J. Polmounter during the past year through the expressed desire of their parents. We are happy to welcome them to the St. John Bosco Family and our Faith Formation Program as they prepare for further initiation into the Catholic Church. 5 8th Work of Mercy Show Mercy to Our Common Home Saint John Bosco Parish Family Fully Alive #Make Mercy Real and Volunteer to light our Church Advent Wreath Advent is a season of joyful expectation; a time of waiting and longing for the coming of our Savior. It offers us deep insight into our faith as we anticipate and prepare not only our homes, but also our hearts as we remember the coming of the Lord Jesus at Christmas and eventual return at the end of time. The fact that Advent comes at a time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when the days are at their shortest, and sometimes dark and bleak, is a fitting image for this season. Christ our Light came, comes, will come to dispel the darkness. Weekly lighting an Advent candle on a wreath of four is a wonder-filled church and home ritual of keeping God s time and joyful expectation. Please volunteer to participate in this weekly church ritual as a family, couple, or single person. Call Sr. Marilyn ext. 5 ASAP with the weekend date and Mass you will attend. There are four Mass weekends in Advent: Nov. 26/27; Dec. 3/4; Dec. 10/11; and Dec.17/18. Thank you for your attention to these details. GOD RECYCLES. The Lord God made you out of dust. (Genesis 2:7) DO YOUR PART: AIM FOR ZERO WASTE... Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Field Notes on Laudato Si - Earth Our Common Home Dear Friends, We, the Pecora s, have been recycling for the past 35 years. When we first started recycling, we had to separate our recyclables. In the past few years it has become very easy, using the single-stream recycling. You can now mix all recyclables together! All you need do is put all your recyclables in clear plastic garbage bags, cardboard boxes, or the reusable recycling bins. Butler Township Recycling Center is located at 150 W. Foothills Drive, Drums PA. Their hours are Tuesdays 4 pm to 7 pm and Saturday 8 am to noon. When you arrive all you do is drive into the building, pop open the trunk of your car, and the volunteers will take out your recyclables, close the trunk, and you drive away. It is very easy! Please give it a try; offer to take your neighbors! A WARM WELCOME St. John Bosco Parish extends a warm welcome to our new Parishioners, Scott, Charelle, Kaylee and Everly Attore.
