1 The Sunday Good News The Church of Saint John Bosco March 18, 2018 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly SAINT PATRICK OF IRELAND Bishop and Missionary Prayer for God s Protection and Christ s Presence As I arise today, may the strength of God pilot me, the power of God uphold me, the wisdom of God guide me. May the eye of God look before me, the ear of God hear me, the Word of God speak for me. May the hand of God protect me, the way of God lie before me, the shield of God defend me, the host of God save me. May Christ shield me today... Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit, Christ when I stand, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me. Amen. Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip who was from Bethsaida in Galilee and asked him Sir we would like to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew, then Philip and Andrew went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat, but if it dies, it produces much fruit. It is not rare for someone to use another to get help to get a job, admission to school, or even just to meet someone of importance. In the political field we call them lobbyists. Today we find some Gentiles using Philip, and he another apostle to gain access to Jesus. The same Andrew is the one who told Peter he had met Jesus and we know how important that meeting was. How many other persons are seeking Jesus, today without knowing it or Him. They have need for access to the Lord. Our restless world turns, but people do not know to whom to turn. Each one of us can assume the role of Philip or Andrew, to bring them to Jesus or Jesus to them. The grain of wheat will then produce much fruit. THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU The Church encourages us to make confession a regular part of our spiritual life, especially during the holy season of Lent. Again this year, parishes are participating in a Lenten initiative called The Light Is On for You. Every Monday evening during the Lenten season through Monday of Holy Week, March 26, confessions will be heard from 6 to 7 PM. Come to or return to this incredible source of God s grace, mercy and healing. THIS WEEK & IN THE WEEKS AHEAD Confirmation Class... 4 PAGE 4 The Sunday Good News From Faith Formation... Dear Parishioners, Our Parish is blessed in many ways, especially in the areas of youth and families, and the various ways that our youth and families practice and celebrate their faith. Many are not aware that we have a parent Faith Formation group called FAMILIES IN FAITH which began about four years ago with a group of parents seeking ways to experience faith in a different way in order to better support their children as they grow in their own faith. Here is a little bit of information about the group and its mission, described by one of our parent leaders: Our group formed a few years ago and one thing we all agreed on was the need to expose our children to more service. Placing a can in a collection box is great, but there is no connection between the child and where that can is going. Collecting cans, boxing them and delivering them to the pantry would have more impact. Our goal is to involve our children in hands on service activities to reinforce what they are learning in faith formation and hopefully, re-establish our faith community while we're at it! The group organizes three service activities each year: A movie night, a bake sale and one that changes from year to year. Last year we made Keep the Faith Boxes, of which we received about 22 boxes, that benefited Brandon's Forever Home. This year the group will cook and serve dinner at Divine Providence in Hazleton. The date for this activity is Saturday, April 7th. With 256 students enrolled in our Faith Formation Program we are excited when we think of all the things we can do! We need more involvement though. Children between ages 5 and 10 are often the most eager to volunteer. They love being a part of something. The idea is to serve because you want to, not because you have to. The more they volunteer through their church, the larger our faith community can grow which is something that is dwindling everywhere. All churches' futures depend on our children, and that's why it's important to volunteer at church functions. The group meets during Faith Formation once a month. Three service activities are planned throughout the year. The group tries to keep things as simple as possible, as families are busy with work, school, extracurricular activities, and more! To help keep you informed, there is a Service Center Board outside the Faith Formation Office. The service board is updated a few times during the school year and lists upcoming service activities. As Catholics we believe in faith and works. The benefits to volunteering are numerous and include gaining confidence, making a difference, meeting new people, being a part of something, learning something new, and having fun too! If you would like to participate in service projects with your child but don't have a lot of time, this is the perfect opportunity. Stop by one of our meetings! The date is announced in the bulletin or you can check with Carla in the Faith Formation office. (L.S. 2018) We are grateful for the participation of the families involved in the group, and are hopeful that more will become involved! Keep an eye on the bulletin and Service Center Bulletin Board for upcoming activities. May God Bless You and Your Families, Carla Bednar, Director, Youth Faith Formation CHARISMATIC FORMATION DAY VIDEO MINI-CONFERENCE The Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Diocese of Scranton will host a Formation Day Video Mini-Conference on Saturday, March 24, at the Holy Family Center in Nanticoke, beginning with registration and breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. The video conference will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. With a theme of "Power for Praise and Proclamation," the day will include video presentations by Dr. Mark Nimo from Chicago and Damian Stayne from Great Britain, as well as times for group discussion and prayer. Conference registration fee is $25 per person, which includes three meals. For more information and registration details, including overnight accommodations, contact Bob Valiante, Catholic Charismatic Renewal, P.O. Box 3306, Scranton, PA ; phone (570) ; or at ccrenewal@comcast.net. REGULATIONS FOR FAST & ABSTINENCE 2018 Days of Fast and Abstinence: Ash Wednesday (February 14) and GOOD FRIDAY (March 30) Days of Abstinence: All Fridays in Lent ABSTINENCE: Age 14 and older. NO MEAT may be eaten. FAST: 18 to 60 years old. Only one full meal, two partial meals. THE PRETZEL: Once considered the official Catholic food of Lent, pretzels date back at least 1,400 years. Because fat, eggs and milk were part of the Lenten abstinence, these little bites of bread made only with flour, salt and water were invented. They were wrapped in the shape of arms crossed in prayer and the three holes in the middle represented the Trinity. Traditionally, pretzels were the perfect food to share with people who were struggling for food or living on the streets because they didn't spoil easily. As a Lenten Family activity we encourage you to make them (get a recipe on the internet) and share them with someone in need.

5 LIVING WATERS DISPLAY World Water Day, on March 22 every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is 'Nature for Water' exploring naturebased solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21 st century. In addition, the newly confirmed (eighth grade students) will take part in the May Crowning at this time.
