1 The Sunday Good News The Church of Saint John Bosco December 23, 2018 HIS WORD TODAY BY Rev. William J. Reilly When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby stirred in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and cried out in a loud voice: Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. But who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?... Blessed is she who trusted that the Lord's words to her would be fulfilled. ADVENT PRAYER Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, (mention intentions) through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ and of his blessed Mother. Amen. What a wonderful family reunion. Two expectant mothers meeting, greeting, celebrating imminent births. St. Luke points out the presence of the Holy Spirit, even before the Pentecost event. The question posed by Elizabeth who am I?...can be changed for us today. Who am I that my Lord and Savior should come to me? A loving Father saw our need, and in concern for us, sent, not the mother or our Savior, but the saving Lord Himself. How frequently we pray the words of Luke in the Hail Mary. As we complete our advent may the question of Elizabeth, and my question be answered. As we approach the feast of the birth of Christ this week, may we live the visitation event, greeting others in the name of the Lord, recognizing His presence among us in our needy world. The two holy women rejoiced in Christ's presence, and so do we. Reflect for a few moments on the biblical basis of the Hail Mary. 4 PAGE 4 The Sunday Good News The PASTOR S PAGE From the Pastor s Laptop... Christmas is for Children! Dear Parishioners and Friends, In just a few hours Advent will be over and we will celebrate once again the Feast of Christmas. It is often said by many adults that Christmas is for children. Yet, the Child Jesus is born for the child in all of us, old and young, great and small. Perhaps, Christmas is needed more for adults than for children. Our world often seems filled with the darkness of sin, injustice, apathy, despair, terrorism and war and the fear of death. We may think that there is no worse time than this present moment to celebrate Christmas. Isaiah the prophet, in his own dark days, foresaw the coming of a great light that would break the hold on darkness. This light is Jesus, the one whose Glory gives us hope, and who can mold us in His likeness. Through faith in the Babe born in Bethlehem, we open our hearts to the wondrous gift of salvation and are reminded of His great love for each of us. A love that can overcome darkness, and if we allow, fill us with a deep inner joy and peace. Yes, Christmas is for children, for the child in each of us. May this holy season be a time when God rekindles our Faith and strengthens us to bring the light to His Good News to our families, co-workers, neighbors, relatives and community by our words and deeds. As we celebrate Christmas and enter into this Holy Season, Father Hockman, Father Steven, Deacon Maurice and I want to assure you of our prayerful remembrance of each of you and your families in our masses and prayers. We are grateful to all who have worked so hard, sharing their time and talents to make this season so uplifting and our parish so vibrant. Your efforts, great or small, hidden or in view of others, will not be forgotten by Jesus. May God reward you with a sharing in His Life. May you and your loved ones, here and far, have a Holy and Happy Christmas! God Bless You! Fr. Ric, Pastor PRE-CANA PROGRAM GIVING TREE Engaged couples who are planning to be married at St. John Bosco Church in 2019 are reminded that in addition to their meetings with the Pastor, they are required to participate in a Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation Program as well as to take the FOCCUS Marriage Readiness Instrument online. A listing of 2019 Pre Cana Reflection Days held throughout the Diocese may be found online on the Diocese of Scranton website under Parish Life Office or by calling the Diocese. Registration may be made online. Two sessions that will be held in our area are scheduled for Saturday, March 30 and Saturday, July 20 at Good Shepherd Church Hall in Drums from 8:30 am until 4 p.m. Pre-registration with the Diocese is required. The day includes snacks and a luncheon. We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the members of the St. John Bosco Parish Family who participated in the Giving Tree this year. We collected over 300 gifts for needy children. Your continued support of this worthwhile Catholic Social Service project has enabled us to fulfill the Christmas wishes of the children in the Hazleton area for over 25 years. We wish you a Happy and Blessed Christmas! Thank you, Father Ric, Carla, Bob and Linda for your help and support during this project! Sincerely, Donna Pesansky and Jocelyn Buffone

Just as the Virgin Mother pondered in her heart on the Word made flesh, so every individual soul and the entire Church are called during their earthly pilgrimage to wait for Christ who comes and to welcome him with faith and love ever new. ~ Pope Benedict XVI

6 BLESSING FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS MANGER OR NATIVITY SCENE Once you have your Nativity Scene all set up, take some time to ask for God s blessing as a family. In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas creche or manger for Christmas Eve of The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time. BLESSING All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. R/. Who made heaven and earth. A family member reads Luke 2:1 (lines 2-8). The parent recites the following prayer... God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation You have made manifest your love. When our need for a Savior was great You sent Your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, Bless all who look upon this manger. May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to him, Who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. R/.
